The Montreal Canadiens will most likely have more points than us at the end the season. After barely 4 years of truly rebuilding. And they’re adding the best prospect in hockey to the fold.

lmao

The Canadiens are way behind us in their rebuild and are a large underdog to return to the playoffs next season.
I agree with that statement.

But I do think it demonstrates how bad the second half of our season went.

Sure, you could say the Canadiens went on a lucky hot streak for a variety of reasons, and that that probably isn’t sustainable. Point remains, at the Holiday break we were 18 points ahead of the Canadiens. We had a .662% P%, they had a .456%. The 2 teams are now virtually tied by P%.

Pretty brutal second half. Hopefully the team surprises us in the playoffs.

Why are folks just piling on the punishment? Its been a bad 25. Its been discussed ad nauseam.

They clinched a playoff spot and are just meandering through these meaningless games. I am sure they’d have a few more points if the games meant more to the Devils over the last month.

Only thing that matters is the first round. The great start to the season doesn’t matter. The crappy 2025 doesn’t matter.

We have basically been in preseason mode for over a week now. I am itching for playoff hockey. We can go back to the depression post playoffs.

Edit: Sorry. Thought we were in the postseason thread. Carry on then

They got lucky in all the ways we got unlucky.

Montreal is +2 in goals, we are -11. When you include empty net goals in this, either for or against, Montreal is +3, the Devils are -3. So in goals scored with a goalie in the net, the Devils are -8 and Montreal is -1, and yet they are separated by 17 points in the standings.

This just goes to show how much nonsense the regular season has in it, with empty net goals and overtime goals and the like.

I haven't harped on this in a while but the Devils' close losses this year are kinda wild - when I last checked, the Devils were 10-10-8 in one-goal games in regulation (EN excluded). Now they are 15-16-10. Which means that they are 26-15 in games decided by more than one goal (EN excluded).

I am curious where 10 OT games ranks, that has to be close to the bottom, and also extremely close to the bottom for a team that gives up as few goals as the Devils do.

Only the Hurricanes and Rangers have less games make it to OT this season.

Devils also virtually gave up on the last 6 points on the schedule whether you agree with it or not, the regular season was effectively meant meaningless after they clinched. I couldn't care about point totals for a team, Washington barely snuck in and did a re-tool and won the East this year.
