Devils discussion (news, notes and speculation) - part VI

Holy f***, we had to go down this rabbit hole last night?

I was a sophomore in college, ecstatic thinking that we were moving on and the Rags had been knocked out. Those back-to-back late goals were such gut punches. I was like many others here, despondent and unable to even get a word out over what we had just watched.

I'll never forgive Brent Sutter for his inexcusable coaching decisions in that game. He rode old men Madden, Pando and Shanahan into dust in that game while playing Patty a whopping 14 minutes in a Game 7. f*** that tone deaf ogre into oblivion.

What an absolute moron. Nothing grinds my gears like a coach who gets paid millions to pull a galaxy brain move like this that any average HF poster would know better than to do for free. People say it’s more about the players than the coach but this is a prime example of how coaching can in fact be the difference between winning and losing a playoff series.

Then he went and f***ed right off back to his farm. I mean I'm glad he did but what a little puke.

The 3-0 almost comeback only to blow it in the final millisecond of Game 4 was only the appetizer for the shit sandwich we got served in Game 7, most run of the mill series that Game 4 ending would be the decisive blow

God. The ending of that pissed me off. I can still hear my one friend making fun of Chico for his “It’s a bump a Marty party.” Then Marty responded with an absolute masterclass in Game 5.

Yeah that 09 Carolina series was my worst sports memory to date and the ironic part was that it was my first full year watching the Devils. It also felt like the Devils could've done something had they got past Carolina, Marty came back mid year and wasn't tired from the usual 70 games, Parise was a monster the whole year too carrying the team up front.

Memories are being unlocked now. I can remember Marty going down early in the season and hfboards was in shambles. We were so used to him being healthy and giving us 70 starts a season. One of my few “good calls” was making a thread saying “This is a very good team” or something along those lines after Marty got hurt and was confirmed out for some time. I remember we had a pretty heavy forecheck under Sutter and a big deep forward group and I felt it was a good enough team to overcome the injury. Turns out I was right but I didn’t expect them to be THAT good.

Eventually Marty comes back and shuts the door immediately. Momentum was there and it felt like a team that could go far. They trade for Havelid on D which was a kinda under the radar move. I clearly recall Bill Clement analyzing the trade and saying we got our version of Kimmo Timonen which really excited everyone. It seemed like a classic home run Lou trade. Not the big fish but a guy who would help a D corps that needed a top 4 guy. Unfortunate it ended the way it did. If I’m not mistaken Havelid was the guy who blew his coverage allowing the Canes to tie game 7.

I'm only getting angrier re-reading the box score on Hockey Reference

In terms of number of shifts, it went Martin with 28, White with 26, Madden with 26 for 20:14 (leading all forwards), Oduya with 26, Pando with 26 (17:30), Gionta with 26 (16:02), and 25 for Shanahan (17:34).

Parise and Langenbrunner had more time (18:11 and 18:14) but only 22 and 21 shifts. Zubrus only played 18 shifts and 9:38, only Rupp played less. Patty had 21 shifts but only the 14 minutes of time. I don't even know what his usage could have been in this game. All I know it is far below what it should have been. Sutter not valuing Patty the way he should have is all you need to know about him as a head coach.

Infuriating. 1 more goal during that game probably gets it done. Patty was always clutch as hell for us in big games and probably had a lot more to give defensively than Jay Pandolfo at that time. Woof

It looks like they were removed from YouTube possibly, which sucks, but Pat McAfee's boys did a That's Hockey Talk podcast with Rupp and had Bobby Holik on the show. I remember he spoke about how there was a game where the team didn't score and Sutter was using video to call out the 4th line for not doing something, which I think was probably those two and Clarkson at the time. And Holik actually called him out on it for focusing on shit like that out of their line and not the fact that the team didn't score a goal.

Bobby truly is a gem. I can only imagine how few f***s he had left to give about what this clown thought in his final professional season.

EDIT: I did find the audio version of the podcast. He talks about it at the 25:50-26 minute mark. This was about 2 years ago, so they touch on the first game of our series against the Rangers too.

I'm 100% positive that Sutter was the guy Lou wanted after Robinson resigned in 2006. We know he went to Red Deer to talk to him, but Sutter didn't want to come yet. So he hired Julien instead, and then mysteriously fires him at the end of the season. Why? Because the whole time he was working on Sutter, trying to convince him to come to NJ. As soon as Sutter agreed there was no reason to keep Julien. Julien was a placeholder the whole time.

Just finished it. My Thoughts:

Jesus Christ Marty…that first goal was trash and foreshadowed the GWG. @Bleedred signal

Canes second goal, lucky af.

And then of course, the dagger. Literally the first time I purposely watched that Staal goal since it happened.

Hopefully this exercise helps with reversing the Hurricane curse lmao

What kind of pain fetish do you have? Do you want me to put on high heels and step on your RRs next?

Onto a different topic at least, Dillon speaking fondly of Jersey and Westfield in particular. He's an awesome guy. I know I already shared that I got to take my son to his signing at Sports Minded Unlimited earlier this year, and the way that he treated him was beyond top notch. Say what we will about his overall game and how his contract might age, he'll always have a fan in me and my boy.

Man, being an Atlanta fan I have so many sports memories worse than that it's absurd. You guys only adopted the depression, I was born in it.
I am old enough I had to endure the Mickey Mouse comment in real time. I saw the original butt fumble (Joe Pisarchick handing the ball off to Larry Csonka's hip). Haven't you seen any success for the Braves or the Devils at least?

that's been my criteria since I started taking the boys to the signings where we are. Virtually all of the athletes we've met have been class acts with the kids.

I was a Bills fan born after the 4 straight Superbowl losses but just in time to see the 18 year playoff drought. I saw the Bills make the playoffs in 3rd grade and didn't see them in a playoff game until I was in my master's program. Now granted, things have gotten a lot better for us. But still.

Thank God, Zeus, Odin, Ra, Shiva, and all the others up there for Martin Brodeur, if he wasn't my favorite player I would have been condemned as a Sabres fan my whole life.

Who knew I drive nearby him all the time? I’ll send good vibes when I do now.

I’ve always been curious about this. I remember the “draft” we held and you came over. Did you consider becoming a WPG fan? Or did you completely drop fandom of that franchise and immediately move on? How long did it take you to be fully invested in and put your emotional wellbeing at stake with the Devils?
