Why are people saying the Canes cheat? What's this in reference to?

You have to watch the Canes play. Constant holding off face offs and interference away from the puck and lots of cross checks to the back in the corners. They have done a great job developing that into an art form. How else do they get such great results with such a good but not great roster and mediocre goaltending.

I really hope Gritsyuk has worked on his all-around game enough where he can be plugged into the lineup. The Devils badly needs some middle-six talent that can maybe score. But not if he plays defense like Gusev. Legit have no idea but whatever, a lot of Russians stay there til their mid-20s on purpose because they have no interest in playing for league minimum and will come over when they can play for 2M (which I hope is what he will get next year considering he has no experience and Devils might be up against the cap).

The Canes aren’t violent. They don’t take many penalties and don’t fight. Note I said cheaters which can encompass a lot of different things. They are hardly the only ones that play that way. NJ needs to do more of it if they are going to win playoff games.

I totally forgot / didn't realize they played so many games in March.

I had a theory that the D was just exhausted and thats why we scrubbed it up a couple of times in the 3rd.

It's also why with the nearly week off I thought they would have a good showing against NYR

Did not even think about the lack of practices. That's an excellent point.

He's 24, he better be able to be plugged into the lineup.

Doesn't sound like he plays at all similar to Gusev.

But I am aware there will be some moments just due to being new to the league, team, country and all that.

Constantly committing infractions in a way the referees don't see and / or diving. Difference imo, is they do it in regular season all the time but every team other than the devils do it in the playoffs. Maybe not every, but every successful one does for sure.
