Devils discussion (news, notes and speculation) - part VI

I don't remember where or when, but Seamus said he understood he had lots to learn and if NJ wanted him to play the rest of this year and the next as well he was okay with that.

Far cry from the take Nemec had on the same issue.
To be fair, Casey also wasn’t the #2 overall pick and it’s his first year in pro hockey unlike Nemec who played 65 or so games last year.

Don't talk to me about SH%

So many positives coming out of the victory against the Rangers. The play of Seamus Casey is one of the biggest positives from the game. If he continues to be at least decent defensively and not make the egregious mistakes that Nemec does, he should jump Nemec on the depth chart for good. Unlike Nemec, he hasn’t sulked at all about not playing with the big club. In fact, he’s been the polar opposite. The kid is special and I’m a fan.

Keefe finally gave him some well-deserved praise (see article).

What do we do next year if Casey is ready for a full time role? The long term solution is parting ways with Hamilton but that’s not going to happen yet (maybe 2026). Along with Kovo and Pesce, Seamus is blocked. Good potential problem to have.

If there's any hope of significantly boosting the forwards it'd like mean parting with Dougie now.

After Columbus’ loss last night, I think our number for clinching 3d in the metro is 2 points.

For Columbus and the Rangers each. One win by us puts us over the top as to both of them. One more loss by either of them puts us over the top as to that team.

For either of them to beat us out, that club needs to run the table for the rest of the season and we need to lose every single remaining game.

We clinch with a win against Boston at home on Tuesday.

We need Tampa to beat the Rangers tomorrow in any fashion and that would let us clinch with a win on Tuesday.

If the Rangers lose in regulation we would just need 1 point. If the Rangers get 1 point then we need 2.

Rangers current max is 91 and we are at 89 currently but just say they win out in regulation they would end with 91 points and 38 regulation wins. If we only win Tuesday and lose out the rest of the way in regulation we would end with 91 points and 37 regulation wins so they would get in over us.

So that's why we need Tampa to win tomorrow.

Since we have the tie breaker already over Columbus a loss today by them or a win by us on Tuesday means they can't pass us.

It's nice that the Devils are winning games, but I don't think they're playing that much better than they were when they weren't winning games - the real lesson here is that a lot of times, there isn't a fundamental difference between winning and losing in hockey.

Depends on when you're talking about. The big difference right now is Markstrom isn't Vanacek in the playoffs anymore. Other than that, I'd agree.

They also don’t have Jack…they needed to start playing better than they were with him just to tread water

Rangers have shown us many times over the last 5 years that goaltending and good special teams can take you far in the postseason.

Anything can happen

It took godly goaltending and even then it wasn’t enough for them to overcome the bad skaters.

Some folks forget the fandom aspect.

Like, we are Devils fans. It’s ok to hope for some victories in the playoffs even if they don’t win it all. Those kind of moments live on in our memories.
We just lived this two years ago, with an epic round one…like 95% of teams don’t win the Cup every year, feel free to enjoy the smaller victories. The 2012 run was about as epic as it gets for one that came up short.

Devils special teams have played well all season, that actually hasn’t changed for the most part. But they’ve definitely had better games recently than yesterday, the fact they still won comfortably says more about the Rangers than us imo
During the 2-6-3 stretch from Dec 28th to Jan 19th, the Devils scored 4 pp goals and allowed 6 on the PK. -2 overall on special teams during that run.

A -9 at ES which was due in large part to a poor shooting % but they were getting outshot during this stretch too.

PK has been good pretty much all season, even during the stretch mentioned here they were pretty good.

But the PP started hot and then slumped. It's had a bit of a perk up of late.

Even beyond the fandom.

Most of Nico and Bratt's career has been not just no playoffs, but really bad regular season finishes. Those guys making the playoffs and then potentially enjoying some level of postseason success is important for their mental makeup.

Not many players talk about it, but O'Reilly did mention how years of playing on bad teams effected him mentally. How wouldn't it?

I also think the idea that we have no chance vs Carolina is bunk. Sure they beat us a couple years ago but we are much different team and Carolina has not been some playoff juggernaut, quite the opposite really.

If they played MacDermid in game one and he agreed to put Aho out of the series it would change the calculus. If they played me instead of MacDermid NJ would be guaranteed to win in four.

Past a certain point, I'm definitely a cup or bust fan. But '18, '23 and this year are bonuses to me.

I think the team's close to being in the top tier. Changes to be made are obvious and you have to hope Yegorov works out, but otherwise, still pretty positive. It's obvious they can beat the teams they should, for the most part.

If their poor play was just injury related I wouldn't be so hard on this year but they were a contender then inexplicably became god awful. Obviously the injuries killed their chances but even healthy they probably wouldn't be good enough and they SHOULD be good enough. They should already be in that top tier.

I never felt like this was their time for multiple reasons, the biggest being that TB, DAL, COL, FLA, TOR, etc. haven't aged out yet. But it's coming. They probably were never going to go all the way being this top heavy on offense, but they've become one of the best defensive teams in the league and we already what it looks like if they get some speed and explosiveness back offensively. They'll have multiple shots at it - beyond the goalie, the holes on the roster are the easiest things to deal with, trade / UFA-wise. Do I trust Fitz to get it right? That's the bigger question.

Beating Carolina would be particularly satisfying and the more playoff experience the better.

I remember when we sucked and sucked and sucked year after year and people said they just wanted to play meaningful games in March.

We’re over .500 for 7th time and a playoff team for 4th time in 15 years. I like the Devils doing that a whole lot more than them not doing either.

I've moved beyond cup or bust, its just going to make every year depressing, especially if the league expands to 36 teams. Very real chance Devils don't win a cup in the next 25 years, gotta find other sources of enjoyment as a fan (like seeing players develop, or winning close games, knocking out rivals in the playoffs, etc).

I hope the Devils knock out the Canes, and I hope I see some good hockey games. Anything beyond that will be a bonus I think and I'll enjoy the run until it ends.
