Devils discussion (news, notes and speculation) - part VI

I still hate zone starts. Nobody starts over 50% of their shifts in the offensive zone, most start on the fly or in the neutral zone.

So there is some difference but people end up thinking it’s huge when it may only work out to 1-2 a game.

16.2% of Nico’s shifts start in the defensive zone while 14.3% start in the offensive zone at 5 on 5. It works out to 1 extra defensive zone start every 3 games.

Still a positive for Nico, this is just a rant about how influential people think zone starts that only look at offensive/defensive starts are.

Does he really deserve $4M? When you have him, Palat at $6M and Haula at over $3M...there is a cost to those decisions. Could have had a legit top line forward for those dollars instead and still filled the 3rd pair role and 3C role.

Except there wasn't one available that was willing to sign.

I get what your saying but does'nt Nico take the most or the second most faceoffs in the entire league? If it wasn't important why not throw out Haula, Mercer, Dowling or Lazar. These situations are all important till they're not.

It’s not important vs not important.

It’s that people think the raw difference in starts is immense because they’ll see a guy gets 20% more offensive zone starts than another guy but in reality it works out to like 1 extra zone start every other game.

If zone starts wanted to be given more reasonably to people that only casually want to follow numbers, they should use all shifts for players but saying Nico starts 16% is shifts in the defensive zone and another guy who isn’t used much defensively starts 11% doesn’t give us much headline pop, even though it’s a more accurate reflection of usage.

People see a headline like that and their gut thinks he’s taking a massive number of more defensive zone shifts than other guys, and they’d probably be surprised by how small the actual difference is.

Nico being used in high leverage and high opponent quality situations is a different thing and doesn’t necessarily relate to zone starts.

Nico has the toughest assignments regardless of zone starts. Like 95th-percentile + every year. Giving as much as offense has he does given the assignments deserves a lot of credit.

He’s never really had the chance to showcase his playmaking here given he was immediately thrust into the shutdown role. His offensive numbers have come on A LOT in the last 3 years. Near PPG Selke caliber center who is captain everywhere he goes.

If Nico has million fans, then I'm one of them.
If Nico has one fan, then I'm THAT ONE.
If Nico has no fans, that means I'm dead.

Overrated 3C who should be traded for Laine

I've said it before, given the choice of having Jack or Nico out, I'd rather have Jack out every single time. Nico's responsiblities and his all around game are just too important to how this team plays now. Run and gun, zero defense, 6-5 games, yeah maybe Jack is more important.

That being said, there is no way in hell, in a MILLION f***ING YEARS, that not having Jack Hughes in the lineup is anyway beneficial to this team.

C'mon stop with this nonsense.

Man they really love getting more and more detailed in the stats. Now measuring where the shift starts on the ice lol comical
They’ve been doing it for at least 2 decades.

It’s been around so long that it’s already gone through the cycle of being an exciting/interesting number to something that is rarely quoted because it doesn’t have enough impact on player results the vast majority of the time.

Just wait until you see how much clutching grabbing holding interference cross checks and hits to the back Carolina gets away with. Especially Sasquatch. I probably skate faster than that guy at this point. It will be some of thr worst hockey you have ver seen played. And the Canes will not fight when called out after the cheap shots.

You say this like we haven't seen this multiple times already lol. That team has gotten away with a lot of nonsense in the playoffs for quite some time.

I’m still betting against the team.
