Better start paying attention to Nico's UFA clock also, they flame out and miss this year, you only have virtually a year to sell on him this team's future like Taylor Hall 2019 esque

Losing Nico would hurt so much. Poor drafting and complete ignoring of the center position because they have 2 elite centers.

Nico has no geographic ties to anywhere else in the league, he's the captain here, and the Devils got him two members of his national team to play with. Worrying about Nico leaving is worrying just to worry.

Saying to keep an eye on his UFA clock has nothing to do with worrying, it's called being realistic with how everything has been in his tenure here. Nico owes nothing to the Devils if they continue to be garbage during his playing career here, "two members of his national team", really? Lmao. Him walking is a possibility and to have your head burned in the sand like it's not a thing that can happen in 2 years time is blatant foolishness.

It is a thing that can happen. It would take a massive confluence of bad circumstances for it to happen.

Every person who worries calls it being realistic. Just a tip for you, you're not really helping your case when you say that.

The New Jersey Devils have been a massive confluence of bad circumstances since February 4th 2010.

Just like this season? Just like the past decade for the Devils? You can't just talk down to Nico leaving as bad luck to a franchise that's been in the gutter for the past decade besides one heroic MVP year + one great year that probably looks like a fluke in reality. If Nico doesn't believe in this team regardless of what you post/think then he's gone. The only opinion that matter is his in the whole situation. He can wake up one day in the next 2.5 years and say this isn't for him and walk his clock to UFA

Okay. Enjoy all this. A team sitting in playoff position is 'in the gutter' now.

Yet that move was the closest needle mover we've had since 2003
It was a fun run for sure ...but it was more Cinderella than concrete. We had much better teams prior that didn't make any noise in the playoffs unfortunately....And the rapid destruction following it? Hard for me to say it was worth it.

Beisdes 2012, 2009 was probably our biggest missed chance. And meh, that's sports, Kovy is probably a Devils legend if they win in 2012 and I'd argue the following decade gets a buffer with everything that happened with a Cup win. They were always going to have to rebuild relatively soon after 2012 if they won or didn't with how that team was made up.

so 6 years? too much time, everything is fine! 2.5 years? WORRY!

When is the break-even point there?

there are SO many things to worry about with this team in general, that Nico maybe being gone in 2.5 years is like 1563th on the list. But hey, be my guest I guess.

It's a discussion board and your captain being two seasons away from UFA is a valid topic.

Taylor Hall said he wanted to win a Cup and the signed with the f***ing Buffalo Sabres. Players care less about winning championships than you think they do.

There is literally no reason to think Nico is leaving, the Devils are his life and management will be happy to pay him whatever he wants.

Hall also signed a deal with Buffalo that made him be able to be traded to where he wanted to when things went south in Buffalo eventually and then he picked the best team and had multiple runs in Boston so not sure he's the right comparison for this.

At the same time pretending that the topic is 2.5 years away. If next year doesn't go right it will be the only thing talked about leading up to July 1st, pretending like the board won't implode on July 2nd if he isn't signed. Main board and here will be filled with "will he, won't he?", "gotta cash in now on him", "keep him as a rental," until the day he signs or some how something else happens.

Am I worried about it and what will happen? Not in the slightest. But the fear people have about seeing others talk about it is pretty funny.

Just want to jump to next season and see what happens with the bottom-6/depth.

That’s all that matters to me tbh.

I think this team can be good, I like the core and I see them contributing. The defense is solid. The goaltending overall has been solid.

Without depth/bottom-6 adjustments, this team is going nowhere.

Crazy how absolutely ass the rest of the Metro is that this Devils team hasn't floundered their way out of the playoffs.

Kinda a crazy take as this team will be in the playoffs in spite of their shortcomings.

Don't think this fanbase should be in any position to take that for granted. They're gonna get their teeth kicked in by Carolina, but it's still valuable experience to be in the show.

Happy they’re getting the experience if they end up getting there. I just feel so demoralized about how things have turned out. In 2022-2023 I was absolutely pumped about the team heading into the playoffs. I don’t think I could be more apathetic about them making the playoffs, barely crawling in.

We have a rope a dope team right now. 2012 was that kind of team as well. Who knows...I'd say the playoffs have gotten more predictable over the years, but sometimes you get the odd run like the Halak-led Habs or the Isles in the bubble.

This is probably the correct way of thinking. ie, Taylor Hall is a f***ing douchebag. Something Nico clearly is not...
