Devils discussion (news, notes and speculation) - part V

  • We sincerely apologize for the extended downtime. Our hosting provider, XenForo Cloud, encountered a major issue with their backup system, which unfortunately resulted in the loss of some critical data from the past year.

    What This Means for You:

    • If you created an account after March 2024, it no longer exists. You will need to sign up again to access the forum.
    • If you registered before March 2024 but changed your email, username, or password in the past year, those changes were lost. You’ll need to update your account details manually once you're logged in.
    • Threads and posts created within the last year have been restored.

Our team is working with Xenforo Cloud to recover data using backups, sitemaps, and other available resources. We know this is frustrating, and we deeply regret the impact on our community. We are taking steps with Xenforo Cloud to ensure this never happens again. This is work in progress. Thank you for your patience and support as we work through this.

Since the calendar turned only San Jose has scored fewer goals than us.

It's ok though, Fitz said he's not worried about the offense.
Scored enough goals to win tonight. The scoring on a game by game basis is an issue but it doesn't help when your defense/goaltending crumble in the 3rd period and cost you points...

Better start paying attention to Nico's UFA clock also, they flame out and miss this year, you only have virtually a year to sell on him this team's future like Taylor Hall 2019 esque

I'm actually not that worried about that. Yes, if things go badly again next year, he might say "f*** this I'm outta here", but I think he's way more likely to stay than Hall ever was. Although if things go badly again next year, they might need to perform some serious reconstructive surgery on the organization, and who knows what that might look like.

I have been beating this drum for the last three years.

I genuinely felt that we had turned a corner in 22-23. In my mind, we were one Ruff sacking away from becoming perennial threat for the division... Seems I was a bit off.

Nico will have given 10 years of his life and career to New Jersey once he becomes UFA. Can't say I would blame him all that much if he walks. I mean, I would hate him for it, but wouldn't blame him.

We might have been close but Tom decided to blow the whole thing up in favor of toughness.

Sharangovich is 12-12-24 and a minus 13
Wood is 2-2-4 and a minus 5
Holtz is 3-8-11 and a minus 3
Zetts is 17-19-36 and a plus 8

*McLeod is on his way to Jail…

What version of this team would you rather have?

Two things can be true: McLeod is a terrible. horrible, human, but he was very very valuable to this team and was starting to take off offensively.

The Devils went from 3 lines, down to two. (plus injuries.)

This version of the team should be one stacked line, followed by 3 lines of hopes and dreams.

Lazar cratered
Haula cratered (until now, such a waste)
Tatar cratered

The Devils have 1 center Nico. Glass still isn’t the best FO guy. You are stuck with 5pts Lazar, or Nico.

That is why when the Devils lost McLeod, it was a far bigger blow. Nico is on the PP and the PK and every important face off.

I think "blew the whole thing up" is a bit much, but I would agree he overcorrected. Although I seem to recall a few posters here going on about how small and soft they were after getting shitkicked by Carolina.

Palat you would have hoped you'd at least get a couple good years out of before his contract became really ugly, but we're already there. Haula declining has been an issue (although kind of predictable given his age). Mercer has regressed. Holtz was a bust. Tatar 2.0 has lost any scoring touch he had the first time around. Toffoli didn't work out (although from a production standpoint he did mostly what he was brought in to do). Bastian is fine I guess for a 4th liner. McLeod was finally turning into a decent player before he went away for being a piece of shit human being, along with the other Foote (apparently Fitz's no dickheads detector was broken there). The non-rapist Foote doesn't like he's going to make it either. Noesen and Cotter have both been good additions, but we've seen this story before where a guy has a career year and then nosedive. I doubt Cotter is shooting over 18% again next year.

It's actually kind of funny, Shero sucked at evaluating/developing defenseman, and his former assistant Fitz seems to suck at evaluating/developing forwards. Maybe the next GM will be a little more balanced.

Exactly my point but of course the Baghdad Bob poster of the community didn't get the point of my post

Well, yeah, I was more so pointing if they collapse out or get rocked in Round 1 and then miss next year when healthy then why would the dude stay unless there's a massive overpay? The last point is true too, they'd probably make a massive dumb trade with one of the core guys at that rate

Lol, yeah because him playing 17 games in his Devils career and him consistently talking about being wanting to be apart of a winner isn't worrisome.

Nico is signed for TWO FULL SEASONS after this one. Yes, worrying that he is going to walk in 2.5 years is worrying just to worry. I feel like some of you guys enjoy doing this type of stuff for whatever reason.

Next we'll hear about how Jack is going to walk in 6 years.

no, I know exactly what your point was. Your point was silly.

Comparing Jack to Nico shows you have no serious knowledge of whatever you post

what does this even mean? Jack will be an UFA eventually too. Hell, so will Luke! Lets worry about that!

Silayev will be UFA in what, 8 years? Lets start the clock!

(do you see how silly this all sounds?)

I am sorry that you don't like it that I think worrying about players leaving in 2.5 years is kind of ridiculous?

"When you have time, use it."

Is that the mantra we want to return to?

Fitz, if he's still here, will hopefully be having conversations with his team and the player himself to evaluate ASAP. Two seasons is nothing, especially when we have only one season left with a competent starting goaltender.

Ignore it all you like mate, that's fine. You can't be upset that people care enough to worry about these things.

That's ridiculous and over the top. The cold solid fact is that Nico can walk in July 2027.

If that happens, the window slams shut imo. Fitz absolutely cannot let that happen.

Jack has next to no chance to leaving NJ with how Luke is here and chances are they will pay him no matter what, Nico has consistently talked about how all he cares about is wanting to be apart of a winner and has ate shit since since coming to NJ results wise. If he thinks this team isn't going to be good when he's going to be f***ing 28 years old then why wouldn't he leave? I even said in my post if they don't do well next year, please read before you start random ass tangential arguments on the daily. If the Devils do what they're supposed, he most likely stays.

so 6 years? too much time, everything is fine! 2.5 years? WORRY!

When is the break-even point there?

there are SO many things to worry about with this team in general, that Nico maybe being gone in 2.5 years is like 1563th on the list. But hey, be my guest I guess.

i don't think nico walks on his own accord. but if we miss the playoffs and next year is dogshit, it might be time to pull the cord on nearly the whole roster. unlike our last rebuild (thanks to gramps mcdickface) we actually have valuable pieces that would put us in a really good position.

that's definitely not what i want, but if this core can't get make the playoffs consistently it might be time for that conversation. diseased limbs must be cut off.
