Devils discussion (news, notes and speculation) - part V

  • Xenforo Cloud is doing server maintenance Thurdsay 13th at 9 AM GMT. Downtime is to be expected during the process. Server changes were implemented recently to cope with the traffic surge last week. This seems to be affecting the user login, so please anyone experiencing this, log out and clear the browser cache. We expect to have this issue solved once the maintenance is complete.
  • We are currently aware of "log in/security error" issues that are affecting some users. We apologize and ask for your patience as we try to get these issues fixed.
Dumolin has been very good with Kovacevic, yea he got notably burned twice and they both ended up in the net. You like a save on one of those. He has a 70% xGF. He has been a fine Siegenthaler replacement, which we desperately needed.
Agree we needed that type of player.

But I don't want to hear to "except for getting notably burned twice he has good stats". Nor "make a save".

I think he’s been pretty fine.

He’s brought the veteran calming presence that the team knew they need with both Siegs and Hamilton out. He’s move the puck and support the offense a little more than I thought he would.

Team has to play composed and tight hockey right now. I still see Casey and Nemec both as NHL guys but they both lean more dynamic than composed in what they bring right now.

It is wild that I feel much more confident with Allen in net.

I think we need to accept that this is the nature of goalies. There are maybe 4 or 5 in the league that you are always confident in. The rest are like Markstrom or Allen. They are fine behind competent defense, but some nights will look great and other nights will look like they never played goal before.

Since Markstrom returned, yes.

But there was like a 5-7 game in a row stretch where Allen was even worse than this between November-January. Allen hardly played at all in this stretch. It was literally from about Thanksgiving through the last week of January when Markstrom got injured where Allen was pretty weak in just about every game played. And I don’t think we won a single game he started, despite winning nearly all of them with Markstrom in the same stretch.

So I’m hoping that’s what’s happening with Markstrom right now and that it’s just random and not the injury still affecting him.

Both Markstrom and Allen have played excellent the majority of the year. Marky has first shot jitters (like a lot, going back years) and Allen has been inconsistent the last few years but this season specifically, both are delivering more than asked.

I was thinking late last night after the game, like Allen and Daws were keeping the goals against wayyy down than Markstrom has been since he got back.

To be fair, Markstrom first game back was really good, we just had no offense to help. But since that, he's been human.

Now Casey in for Cholowski is 100% something I would try as it's a righty spot and one you can shelter and even throw PP minutes to, Cholowski getting PP minutes is pretty ridiculous. But as you say Keefe has not shown trust in Casey at all.
Yeah I would prefer Casey there as well, but Cholo is actually a pretty skilled offensive player. I think he could work out for us as a stop gap.

Dumoulin has largely been steady back there so far. Was happy to see him get rewarded with an assist on Timo's goal.

His most egregious mistakes (2) have ended up in the back of the net, but given he's been dropped into a new system just 3 games ago, I think he's been very good alongside Kovy.

I would have flipped out if he finished that chance he got to walk in on in the 2nd period last night.

Remember the trade deadline? That was a fun day.

Brady, at 25 years old, is 3 goals away from 4 straight 30 goal seasons. Timo has three 30 goal seasons in his career.

And maybe the Four Nations is not representative of every game life in the NHL but Brady, against the highest level of competition, was a physical goal scoring beast. As noticeable a player as anyone in that tournament. Saying "he fought someone" as you do, suggests you may not have watched the tournament.

I also don't see them as very similar in terms of style. I mean, yeah big strong goal scoring wingers, but I feel Timo is more a guy who pushes the puck up ice and gets a large portion of his chances on the rush while Brady is more in zone, and in general much more physical.
The entire bolded claim falls apart when you realize that timo had 28 in 69 games last year.
