Meier has improved his defensive game, perhaps at expense of his offense. He's also been snack-bitten. But you're right - we're just like, just almost there on offense but still overall missing something.

I think it was @Comparison Ford, earlier this year, that pointed out when can't get to 4 wins in a row. That kind of made me realize... we're a good team. Without injuries we are more than a bubble team. But either way - i think the pundits and media have consistently pegged us as a cup contender - when I never really felt that way.

cup contender to me is a team that should win the first round and have a legit shot winning a second round not like being swept or out in 5 games no showing it. so yeah the devils should've been considered cup contenders going into the season.

you rather a 2nd round pick next year to MAYBE be buyers at the deadline as opposed to making the playoffs now? wtf dude! wtf is a 2nd round pick going to get you next year that you are willing to risk having a decent shot at winning a round in the playoffs and then who knows. i've heard some crazy hf takes but dang!
Reading comprehension man.

I said I would rather use that pick to buy players "at the draft" to help them next season. No, not next year's deadline. I want to upgrade next year's roster, not buy rentals on a team that isn't going to win a round. Try actually reading before resorting to vitriolic responses.

Three quarters of this board were saying the Devils playoff chances were cooked after the Jack injury (I was not of that opinion). Now you're telling me this team has a "decent shot" at winning a round. Let's get real man.

I don’t think they need elite players. Probably can’t afford to pay for elite players either.

They just need someone capable of finishing Hughes-Bratt set ups and/or someone capable of playing 2C.

Ideally that could be one player, even if it’s a player like McCann that works best as a wing but could play 2C if needed.
maybe mccan is a good piece 30g 65pts thats nice second line first line material. thats even if the kraken want to trade him to us i was just thinking pure ufa route without giving up pieces

We need an Alex Tuch type. Or Jared McCann. Guys like that would be ideal for us this summer via hockey trades.

Sam Bennett would be ideal in free agency. But I do not think Florida let's him go. Or Anthony Mantha out of Calgary. I do not forsee, nor do I think it is necessary to throw money at Marner.

oh i'm sorry i was off your timeline by 6 months so you rather punt on the playoffs now so you can be buyers at the draft with your second round pick. muuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuch different then me thinking you said trading it at the deadline and punting on the playoffs lol

for people upset at the draft picks we traded we get awarded new ones every year

Draft or deadline, you never prioritize a pick over improving playoff chances. If you are IN a playoff spot and you get to the dance...you have to give yourself a chance. Not addressing your top paring Left defenseman is not helping those chances.

Maybe if we are on the outside looking in right now that's different but we are not a Bubble team. We are a playoff team until we are not.

Yes, six months is a big difference when talking about the trajectory of a team. I think we should know a lot can change in six months.

No, I would not punt on the playoffs. I think they will still make the playoffs. I said that at the time of Jack's injury, to much chagrin from 75% of this board.

I just wouldn't be investing more for this season. I would stand pat, sneak in the playoffs, and see what happens.

I did not advocate for selling anywhere. Again, reading comprehension man. All you've proven is that you literally don't know how to read and invent fake things to get mad at.

Give themselves a chance at what? What do they have a chance at?

I'm not, and never have said, that they should sell and actually use the selection at the draft. I'm saying if you're buying players, the focus should have been for next season. Could even have bought a player that is signed for this season and next season, helps both.

Buying rentals when you have no chance of winning the Cup is what's dumb.

Sorry. Agree to disagree. If you make the playoffs you have a chance.

I'm inclined to say addressing our top LD spot with Siegs out for the year was MORE important then landing a top 6 forward. I honest to goodness believe that. You are vastly underestimating a move like that for a playoff team. We need to rely on our defense and team defense to win. We need to win 2-1 and 3-2 games the rest of the way.

flip meet flop

Hypothetically if Devils do get in and face Canes in round 1. I really think that is a more even series than people would assume.

IF Devils win then they get I think Caps round 2? Again, I think closer than people would think.

Then ECF and Cup, they would be entirely outmatched and outclassed given the Atlantic and West.

But I hate this talk. Lets take care of business and get in first. Lots of work still to do.

I agree. Carolina and Washington don't scare me. I'm not saying they couldn't beat us - they absolutely can. I'm just not intimidated by them.

But after that... i turn into a bashful bojanglez

Carolina's goaltending stinks and their forward corps is not great overall either with Necas/Rantanen not there. They play their system to a T though which makes them so tough.

But lets not kid ourselves, they have played middling hockey for awhile now too.

Those two statements are completely congruent. It's just you're unable to understand any kind of argument with nuance, or that isn't all caps and exclamation marks screaming.

How is "not selling" the same as "punting on the season"?

guy you want to keep a 2nd round pick and not improve the roster aka improve your chance at making the playoffs and help be a better team for the playoffs. just own the L you can trade it at the draft

So why didn't they go all in for Rantanen? Marner? Gotta improve your chances right?

thats why they play the games no reason to just assume the caps would even be there in round 2. its the perfect division setup to avoid elite cup contenders until the third round which hopefully they could be dragging ass if we made it that far.

just hope that ovie breaks the record on the final game of the regular season would love to see how they bounce back x amount of nights later game 1

They have a .549 pt % since Thanksgiving. Thats 90pts over a full season.

It was a tough market for prices and for meeting a priority. I don't think they were gonna thread the needle of a low price or team control on replacing Siegs.

And with the prices paid now, you're looking at a lot of prospect graveyards inside of five years. The team is clearly not a cup winner, they're still young, so it's good to watch everyone else blow their load now.

now you are just being silly you know that answer plus how do you know they didn't. the moves fitz made didn't jeopardize your plans for the future and helped to get them to the playoffs. i would've liked a more skilled center but he said they came in second. i respect that.

Why? You don't want to improve their chances? They could win the Cup!!! Who cares about the future, playoffs are now right? That's what I thought you said!!!!?!!!?

Wow, you just want to punt the season!!! Take the L and your picks to the draft.

The NJ Devils have more of a chance of winning the Cup this season then that 2nd round pick panning out. It's a buyers move. Aggressive to replace our top Left Dman. I have no problem with it. Dumolin is a solid D. Buying teams care about winning now
Not abundant amounts of 2nd round picks.

It's also showing the team he believes in them by not selling off key UFA's. Signing one on deadline day and holding onto the 4th line.
Oh we didn't have to use the 2nd rd to draft at all, could've used to trade up or into the 1st or the most likely go use on a win now player

If Jack was healthy n the offense showed a lot more, a "final piece" move makes sense yes.

But Dumo does nothing to change our trajectory to the cup this year. All we have is him for this season so it does nothing going forward
