Devils discussion (news, notes and speculation) - part V

  • Xenforo Cloud has upgraded us to version 2.3.6. Please report any issues you experience.
A few options I'd be inquiring about:

Hockey trades
1. C/W Trevor Zegras for Dawson Mercer
2. C Shane Pinto for Dawson Mercer
3. C Casey Mittelstadt for Dawson Mercer
4. W Mattias Maccelli for Dawson Mercer
5. W Mikko Rantanen for Simon Nemec, Dawson Mercer, 2026 1st

Pure Rentals
1. W Kyle Palmieri for 2025 2nd
2. W Rickard Rakell for 2025 2nd and 2026 3rd
3. W Jason Zucker for 2025 3rd

Longer term holds
1. C Ryan O'Reilly for 2025 2nd and 2026 2nd
2. C/W Jared McCann for 2025 2nd and 2026 conditional 1st (if reach ECF, otherwise 2027 1)
3. W Lawson Crouse for 2026 3rd

I think if they can add (1) one of McCann or O'Reilly and (2) one of the wingers and the Devils would be in fine shape. Think they could do both and still have another 2nd to use in the draft.
I would pull the trigger on all these proposed deals with one caveat. Fitzgerald better be 1,000 percent sure he can extend Rantanen. If Nemec, Mercer and a 1st are traded away and Rantanen walks, I’d demand Fitzgerald fired on the spot. Imagine giving up such premium assets for nothing.

As it stands for Carolina, if they don’t trade Rantanen and he departs as a UFA, it’s just a horrendous deal for them. Necas is a great player in his own right and there’s something to be said about chemistry. For a team that is cheap and historically conservative, I’m surprised that transaction was made.

Agreed for the most part, this is my issue with the people ‘complaining about the complainers’, there are legitimate reasons to be worried/annoyed with the state of things and it just comes off as looking for fights when you literally tilt at windmills attacking every negative thing said and acting like it’s the dumbest thing ever posted just about every other post.

Conversely the actual over the top stuff like laughingstock of the league and literally only coming to the board ever to complain or take bows over something you said about the team negatively is just begging to get yourself eviscerated.

This is so true. Honestly just seems at certain points like they want to just feel smarter and more measured than everyone else. It's Devils PR.

Yeah, some people are being dramatic about what this all means, sure. And people love to cherry pick those comments. But it's absolutely justified to be worried about the health history of our two best players and the GMs inability to put together a team that doesnt have a glaring weakness that severely hinders the team.

worry about whatever you wanna worry about man.

But to say "he may never recover from this!" is not a comment for a rational discussion. That is being overdramatic.

I just want to go on the record as saying this. If the Devils were to give up anything significant for Laughton, I’ll be firmly on the “Fire Fitz” contingent. I am completely dumbfounded how Philadelphia thinks they can get a first for him (and a team could be stupid enough to oblige). This is a mid player who does not come anywhere close to moving the needle.

You'll find that almost all people agree that it's overdramatic. But I think you have a tendency to cherry pick some of the most dramatic points that people make on this board and use it to paint a broad stroke over everyone who has concerns/worries about the team trajectory or a specific player's longevity. I think that is equally unhelpful.

Laughton is the definition of mid. He is basically Dawson Mercer. Is he better than what we have? Sure. Should we give up a prime asset? Hell no.

Every time a team gets Jakub Vrana thinking they're the ones to polish him off and get a great player, he inevitably gets dumped a few weeks later. At some point you have to stop falling for it and just admit that sometimes it's the player's fault.
The problem is that he could have like 3 goals in 18 games and represent an improvement. Even with otherwise shit play.

I didn’t realize just how good and consistent Kadri has been over course of his career. It’s a shame he has 4 more years on that contract. His final season would be age 38 and that’s scary AF. Haula and Palat have really scared me away from older players. Kadri woukd be a great fit. It’s unfortunate.
Yea for some reason I thought he only had 1 or 2 left on his deal

question isn't just for you but realistic what would be the return. not what they want but what they should expect.

also i would love for the devils to get him but they aren't trading him only to possibly face him in the first round

To me sounds like Mikko is more rental than anything.... so no significant assets should be given if that's the case...

I get it, they have til tomorrow but gotta figure today between Carolina & Mikko is when they'll know they're keeping him or not.

Still though, like I said in a post beforehand, if Mikko ain't helping Carolina since the trade, why would that change with us?

Luckily we don’t have a first, if that’s the actual price for him.

Small sample size. I have no reason to believe he just got bad. It’s not like he’s 34 years old like Haula, who I do believe is completely shot, even though it’s still a somewhat limited sample size.

If anything, maybe he’s pissed he was traded there or traded out of Colorado in the first place. And he just doesn’t care much right now. Not even saying that’s the case, just that it’s a possibility.
