Every scenario you ponder is "worst case".

Jack may never be the same player. Or he may come back fine and never have another shoulder injury the rest of his career. Short of saying "f*** it, it's not worth the risk" and trading him I'm not sure what you want us or the Devils to do.

No I don’t ponder every worst case scenario. Did I ever post anything like this after his first two shoulder injuries? No I didn’t. This is his third one now and he’s only been around for five years…you’re telling me it’s some kind of huge pessimistic leap to be worried about a worst car scenario at this moment? I mean you’re basically acknowledging the worst case is certainly a possibility, so why are we not allowed to bring it up, or vent our worries, or discuss it? Why are so many on this board so obsessed with policing content that isn’t optimistic enough for them?

Most teams don't have foolproof backup plans for superstar players being injured. We're lucky that we at least have Nico. We already need a #3 center since Haula looks washed and Mercer is clearly not a center. How much cap and assets do you want to commit to a #3 center though?

Well I didn’t say this org should have had a back up plan for Jack. Just saying that if we find ourselves needing to replace him, I don’t trust this org’s leadership to make the best of it.

I assume the Devils get a 3C who can move up in the lineup like an ROR type and then hope the news with Jack is good that he's back sooner rather than later but then if they legit need to use his LTIR, they go full nuclear but who knows

I'm sure there were plenty of fans saying similar things about Crosby given his concussion history.

People need to pump the brakes a bit here.

There were, I recall, and they were plenty justified. For every Crosby there’s a Lindros. And it wasn’t just penguins fans. I’m sure other hockey fans and pundits will openly wonder about the long-term ramifications of another shoulder injury for Jack. Someone send them the HF Devils memo that it’s not allowed and they’re just “inventing scenarios”.

I had to log in with my university credentials so it might be behind a paywall. But here is a screenshot of the abstract/results including the relevant part at the end.

Come down on it whatever way you want, but if its a second dislocation, it does seem like that ups the recurrence rate quite a bit. Close to a coin flip. But also probably not because Jack is a young, male, that is a professional hockey player.

I would much rather Jack just have whatever surgery now if that’s what he’ll eventually need. He wasn’t an impact player last year when he tried to fight through it.

That doesn’t seem to include shoulder surgery though, which is a difference to this blurb, I think.

The way Jack got tripped into the boards may have hurt anyone’s shoulder so it may or may not be indicative of a longer term issue.

The time he hurt his shoulder on an innocuous play was more concerning but he got surgery after, which changed his situation.

I’ll wait for the diagnosis before thinking about what this instance means for him.

Surgery doesn’t really reduce odds of a recurrence unfortunately. It is going to be more susceptible.

That said he can have a fine normal career.

Circling back to the Wes McAuley and Sheldon Keefe story:

The fact that the NHL has completely ignored this obvious conflict of interest that would be deemed as gross negligence in any other reputable organization just confirms that this league is run by unserious people.

I'm not a doctor so Im not going to try to pretend to know what means what, but I'll just say that I do know that shoulder injuries lead to more shoulder injuries. That doesn't seem to be disputed anywhere. It also seems clear and not disputed that surgery does help.

I'm not jumping to any conclusions about what another shoulder injury means. I think he has enough injury history overall, fluke or not, to be concerned about his ability to play full seasons. But maybe that changes as he gets older, I dont know.
