Devils discussion (news, notes and speculation) - part IV

So the Devils turn a 2022 5th round pick into a 2021 6th round pick and they spent cap space to do it?

This is bizarre.

Lachance is having a fine enough year in college but he’s already 21. He’s basically the same age as Hauser.

I don’t see either of them play enough to hold an informed opinion but the number for both don’t scream future NHL player.

Why would you spend cap space to swap one likely AHL guy for another?

Hauser is struggling to get ice time in the Czech league, he's not going to be a North American player barring a miracle. LaChance will at least be a pro.

I can’t wait till the people who are mad we might not be doing a real trade go even more apeshit when Fitz takes one of the Nashville dumpster contracts off their hands lol

We need to be as close as possible to the cap to fully take advantage of LTIR.

Taking dead cap for a free asset does that.

Jack goes on LTIR, we have tons of extra cap to play with.

Moves are coming, calm down.
What most dont recognize is this cap space is, literally, not taken up

We retaines 50% and now that 50% is becoming unlocked via LTIR overage

What we lose is around ~150k, or what some in here make in a single year (though you wouldnt know it right now)

nah see this is where you lose me, I dont care about Frederic the player at all. He is a nothing burger.

its the optics of the whole thing (at this moment)
he's a center who hits people and kills penalties who you can count on for ~15 goals a year. If he's a nothing burger, you must have some craaaaaaaazy nicknames for the ~8 regulars on our hockey team demonstrably worse than he is.

Don't know why everyone's complaining. We finally got that forward depth we've been needing!

I’ll shut my mouth. Should’ve given it more than 5 minutes before completely overreacting lol. 50% of 1.2 + helping maximize cap space would make this a good deal.
Absolutely nothing wrong with admitting this and accepting it. Good for you and Im sure your day will be better off for it.

God Speed, soldier

I admit when I'm ignorant of things and admitting now with the cap and how to work it with LTIR the way teams do around this time. But I've seen multiple people I trust somewhat saying that this has no bearing or helps the cap when using LTIR.

Then see people keep throwing around the word "optics" think about the "optics." Basically, ignore what it actually means and think about how it makes me feel.

Again, I admit to knowing little, but this is how I'm reading the situation, correct me if I'm wrong.

he barely has more points than Erik Haula who hasnt scored since Thanksgiving lol

it really isnt a big deal player-wise. There are plenty of better options.

LaChance is also 6’5 and the captain of his college team - can easily see him being a solid bottom line player for this team in the future.

I don’t think Frederic is a bad player, but he isn’t what we’re missing. He has as many points this year as Tatar, who 90% of this board want to see us get rid of.

Also, we’re retaining $600k approximately on the cap, which when prorated, is even less. People need to calm down

Just laugh about us bringing in a nepo baby for AHL forward depth in the future and carry on.

Youre exactly right. In fact, its even better; 95% of what we just retained is in fact going to become available to us, due to Fitzgerald being a proactive and smart GM who accumulated the right amount of space for the deadline.

Now that Jack is down and going to be on LTIR by Friday, we will regain roughly 1 million of the 1.15 we lost ten minutes ago

Yea but I don't feel good about it, how do you explain that?

Being a good accountant doesn’t make you a smart GM

It's not that, it's the fact Fitz made this mess up with the forward side of the roster and now he has to fix it in the middle of a year the East is wide open as it's been in a long time and this team clearly went in after the Markstrom trade. The one downside of the roster is due to the GM getting too handsy, you can't fault fans for being angry for it. If Fitz stayed the course, this Devils team is probably a top 2-3 contender in the league in the East right now.
What mess? Mercer and Meier not showing up the whole season is a problem for those two, we know they can be better and they absolutely should be better. Palat is doing fine all things considered. Sucks that Haula chose now to become old and washed but sometimes shit happens, we'll get another guy and go from there.

This deal can be good for the Devils IF Lachance becomes a GOOD bottom 6 player and not like the Devils CURRENT version of the bottom 6. At worst he can be a valuable player for Utica...
