Devils discussion (news, notes and speculation) - part III

A defense with Pesce, Siegenthaler, Dillon, Kovacevic and Nemec (at his current NHL point production to date) almost seems like as close as you can get in the modern NHL to some of those none to little offense producing defenses that we had post-Niedermayer and definitely post-Rafalski.

I still don’t really love having Dougie next year, but it might be necessary right now. And I’m not sure Fitz wants to bank on a defense of those 5 I mentioned, along with Luke Hughes, who is the only guy on that defense who looks like he can break 30 points in a season, Nemec improvement pending. I don’t even know if Lou would construct a defense featuring all 5 of those guys as every night players.

Are we really not going to get any information on Siegs' injury for at least another two weeks now that Four Nations is about to kick off??

Those mid-to-late 2000s defensive groups were barren of any offense. Once Rafalski left and especially Martin, it was a big yikes until Zidlicky came along.

I don’t think that group is particularly terrible, especially if we use the cap savings from Dougie to add a quality forward or two.

It IS particularly terrible, barring Nemec breaking out.

Dillon, Siegenthaler, Pesce, Kovacevic, these are all perennial sub-20 point defensemen.

I don't know if it was reported here, but according to Swiss news he's getting surgery and is out for several weeks.

This Tournament really should have been before the season started like the World Cup of Hockey back in 2016. The last thing we need is a possible injury to one of our players during the middle of the season. Also don't want to see anymore of our players have a lousy showing and bring low confidence back to the regular season when it starts back up.

I prefer it before the season too, but I think TNT/ESPN wanted to have this during the barren post-Super Bowl / pre-Spring Training period. A September tournament would get overshadowed by the start of football and the stretch run of baseball.

Realistically it's only going to be 3-4 games and I'm sure the non-participating players are more than happy to get a couple weeks to heal up and recharge their batteries.

is anyone excited for shutting down the league for 2 weeks to play this in brand new gimmicky in season tournament ? that i was told would never happen ?

whatever team wins are they going to go crazy and celebrate on the ice like they won the cup?

I’ll be interested to see how the 4 Nations games are played.

I expect the skating and board battles to be full effort but I do think you will see players be safer with their bodies than they would be in a regular season game. I guess I’m thinking this will be something like an amped up all-star game level of play; all-star with board battling and positional defense actually being played.

Who would this apply to exactly? Seriously doubt Jack or Bratt ‘lose confidence’ because of a mini-All Star tournament and Haula hasn’t exactly done a lot this year anyway, it could only help him

Not sure why there is a growing contingent of our fanbase displeased with Dillon. Has he really been that bad? Genuinely curious here. If there are strong analytics to back that up, I would understand more (maybe there are). From the eye test, I feel as if he’s been fine and what I thought we were getting. I don’t notice him all that much which is usually a good thing for a defensive defenseman.

I have been extremely pleased with Pesce. He’s been everything as advertised and more. Rock solid…makes great reads, isn’t shy at all to block shots…has proven to have a warrior’s mentality in that regards. I don’t think he gets quite enough love.

100% agree on both.

I think Dillon has been a perfect addition for Hamilton. He's basically handling the assignment that the #1 defenseman in the league Siegenthaler couldn't last season.

Defensive pairings and the symbiosis therein are voodoo. See Graves/Marino.

I think there's just a couple of folks who always need whipping boys and have settled on Dillon.

Our defensive corps has been solid, as has the team defense most of the season.

There's a consistency and teambuild problem with how our forwards pay the game, and fail to manage the puck.

All the Dougie talk and Dillon talk is the same as the Siegenthaler talk last year. Mostly nonsense.

I don't care what anyone says, I'm excited to watch these games. I enjoy hockey, watching a mix up of the best players in the world playing together and presumably caring about winning sounds like a lot of fun.

I know everyone is upset they aren't having the All-star game that everyone loved and no one found any fault in though, I'm truly sorry for your loss on that.

i'm fine with it but do it before or after the season not in the middle of it. also theres more then a few "best players" that aren't invited to this.
Not sure the players would want more hockey eating into their summer. Can't imagine players who went deep in the playoffs would be happy about it. This break is built in regardless. At least it's somewhat meaningful and not a joke nobody cares about and everyone tries to get out of it.

i get its all valid points but its a forced tournament where we have to hope none of our guys get injured. i hope usa wins but i hope more that none of the devils get hurt. not to mention its giving other teams a possible slight edge with their stars from other countries getting some rest.

players want to play in these types of things thats fine but sacrifice it elsewhere in the schedule

is there going to be a 4 nation tournament thread? just read that the final will follow nhl playoff overtime rules? going to love that 4overtime final!

Brendan Dillon has been outstanding all year and is one of several big reasons the Devils are in the thick of the playoff race and not a lottery team again. Anyone who says otherwise, I'd have to question their hockey knowledge altogether.

This is certainly a hot take. He most definitely has not been outstanding all year.

As for him being one of several big reasons for this team's success this year...another hot take. He's just another guy back there. Guys like Markstrom, Noesen, Pesce, and Kovacevic have been far more impactful (i'd say in that order too).
