We're at an interesting crossroads.

We have our core talent locked down for a few more years, while our divisional rivals are making their big moves now and spending good assets to do so.

Do we push in now and try to catch up? Or wait a year and make the big jump then while they're weakened?

(We need centers regardless.)

Gonna be interesting to watch. I don't think there's a wrong answer there.

I think a potential route I'd take is going for players that you think can be multi-year fits, rather than for one run.

I get the feeling of seeing rivals making moves to improve their roster and then getting impatient with the lack of moves on our part. But my honest read of the situation is this team hasn’t earned that type of move. I really don’t think this year’s roster for whatever reason has the type of killer instinct needed to win in the big moments. They seem to wilt and lose a lot of one goal games, giving up the tying or go ahead goal late consistently.

Go spend assets and get a 3C and see how that stabilizes the roster. Even with that I think they could compete decently if they solve their lack of finish issues.

We were never in on JT Miller. It doesn’t fit cap (even with the increase because that was factored in already) wise. The Devils name was floated out there by Vancouver to get leverage on the Rangers where he was always going.

You make deals and trades based on the need of you team and situation. You don’t make deals because other teams made “flashy” moves.

I still think the target should be Brock Nelson.

I can switch the offers if people are hung up on Casey for a UFA.

Casey for Evans
2nd and 4th for Boeser
Tatar and a 2nd for taking him for a 7th.

It is a risk, but it is also Fitz going for it.

Why are we trading Tatar with an asset you can waive him and send him down or Bastian or MacD and clear out most or all of the money. I’d rather have hurt feelings then looks a 2nd like that.

It's tough because more than a few potential sellers are on the bubble. You're waiting for reality to set in for some of them.

I don't mind Fitz taking it down to the wire, as long as we make some kind of addition.

Oh no the Rangers got better. They could even be a bubble team if they stopped losing so often. Do something Fitz.

What kind of big move are the Devils supposed to make without a current year first rounder? Timo and Markstrom were big moves, you only get so many of those before you have to reload powder. They could trade Casey I suppose but you don’t trade him or Nemec for a middle six player, you trade them for impact guys with at least a year plus of term. We exactly don’t have a lot of prospect forwards to trade.

Something kind of like Tampa trading for Coleman back in 2019.
If there is a fit yes, but also perhaps going for 27-29 year old potential free agents and looking to extend them (i.e., Evans), rather than a pure rental like Nelson or a player that doesn't fit your window beyond this year based on their age vs. contract that they will get.

Casey for Boeser 1 for 1. Vancouver retains 50% (approx 3 mill). We might have to add a pick.
Send a 2nd rounder and a 4th to Montreal for Jake Evans,
Trade Tatar and a 2nd to a taker for a 6th or 7th in 2027 (this one hurts, especially the 2nd, but is done for cap reasons).

we take 2 2nds and Casey and end up with Evans (with term) and Boeser as a UFA)

Palat-Hughes-Bratt
Noesen-Hischier-Boeser
Meier-Evans-Mercer
Cotter-Haula-Lazar
MacDermid/Bastian(??)

(waive Bastian also if necessary).
No way am I moving Casey for a rental.

I'd be reticent to move any "quality" piece for a rental this year
