Devils discussion (news, notes and speculation) - part III

getting rid of dougie
getting rid of palat
3C problem
luke hughes extension
goalie situation next year
re-signing kovacevic
nemec trade proposals
bad chicken tendies at the rock
bad timo takes

1. NO
2. YES
3. Fitz better have something cooking
4. Feel better about it with the cap news
5. I think they re-sign Allen for 1-2 years.
6. Would love to do it. Just because you have two young studs waiting in the wings doesn't mean you let one of the best defensive d-men in the league walk.
7. Would rather trade Casey... but trading either of them better get us a top six winger.
8. They didn't need to make them so big. Just regular tendies= success. Now they are gigantic, always either overcooked or undercooked, way too much food for one person, and expensive.
9. Any take other than he's handsome and playing very well is a bad take.

The Devils shouldn't even go after big pieces like some people here want.

The issue is their depth, they have the superstar forwards/goalie/defense already in place.

The way you respond to the Rantanen trade is getting a 3C and a winger for Jack/Bratt that pushes everyone down in the proper spots. Not even responding to the JT Miller trade, that's lipstick on a pig

What big pieces are even left that are realistically available this deadline? And we can’t say Brady lmao

He has issues staying healthy but I don't have an issue with his on ice play. He is a fine 4th line RW with the right line or 13th forward.
He’s fine on ice, but who honestly re-signs their long tenured 4th liners once they become UFA/UFA age?

We haven’t re-signed a guy like that since the Lou days, with the exception of just one guy a year ago. And he was only signed to counter Rempe.

Teams rarely bring back their 27 year old 4th liners who they drafted (I know he left for Seattle for barely a minute) 9 years ago.

And that’s not even taking into consideration that he’s missed almost 40% of the game over the last 3 seasons, so he’s an unreliable at best just based on that.

Guys like Bastian are usually with a team until they get to be UFA age. And then they’re gone.

Bastian is not good. He’s not the worst option possible there but we should aspire to better.
I think he’s fine for the rest of this year, but like I just said in the last post, his expiration date with this team is coming up pretty soon.

The shelf life for these types of players in an organization very rarely goes beyond UFA age.

I don't see the Devils being serious contenders for Boeser. He'll cost a hefty price for a rental and I don't see the Devils investing heavily on a rental scoring winger.
I'm sure they have called on him but I agree that Vancouver will demand an unrealistic ask until about 10 minutes before the TDL.

Boeser feels like Toffoli 2

The Canucks might be fine if they stopped playing Demko like he was actually playing any good.

Hopefully he O’Doyle’s Dick Tanket off the cliff at the end of this year.

Yep, seen it all too many times. We found quite a few of these 3rd-4th liners where they play awesome for a while, everyone thinks we found a gem, then their game fades after 1-3 years.

JT Miller to the Rangers as everyone thought. The metro team are getting better. Hope Fitz makes some moves to make our bottom six better. We don’t need superstars, just an improvement in what we have.

That may all be true to some degree - but it doesn't mean we should follow that path. The fact that players like MacDermid are getting games is enough for me to want to resign Bastian. Bastian can actually be productive/impactful with the right linemates.

From some poking around, we're getting linked to Boeser.
He is too inconsistent for me to want him unless he can be had at or under $6.5M a year on a 5 or so year term, which I doubt. Even then, he is slow, not physical and only is taking 2 shots on goal a game. He is an efficient scorer but not sure ultimately he is the right fit.

We should be able to upgrade on him in the offseason. He’s definitely not worth much of a raise on what he’s making now and isn’t worth any term at all.

And you can safely pencil him in to not be available for over half the games.

Do we really think he would get much of a raise anyways? If he's sub $1.5M I don't see how that is problematic.

We will probably end up with Evans or Frederic. Either way I will be okay with that.

Boeser scores goals but he does not play center. It would likely keep Haula at 3C when he is back. I would trade Casey for Boeser stragiht up 1 for 1 If Vancouver retained since he is a pending UFA. But a 3C would be fine as well.
