Devils discussion (news, notes and speculation) - part III

I can't see potentially the two best teams (DAL and FLA) taking on a bad cap hit for 3 years, same with COL.

If there are teams that are looking at $ spent rather than cap space then there could be fits but the 10 team trade list will make it challenging.

Don't think Wild would be an option either, they have Faber and several top D prospects.

It looks like he has had 2 notable playoff runs where he was productive and none in 2020-2021. I don't know if that is a large enough of a sample size. Also he is clearly on the decline.
Dougie hamilton is not a bad cap hit with the cap exploding lmao, get that ridiculous idea out of your head

Brock Faber is still the best comparable for Luke's contract IMO. He got 8 x $8.5

both signed out of college (Faber played 3 years as opposed to 2 for Luke), both played 2 games at the end of 2023, both had 47 points in 82 games last year, both have 21 pts this year. It's actually insane how identical their career paths have been thus far lol

Salary Cap will be +29% in 3 years. Jack, Bratt and Timo still locked up then, Nico would need a new deal, though Palat is off the books. If we can sign Luke to a reasonable deal, we are still going to have a ton of room to make moves.
If anything this makes me want to add Quinn and his lower cap hit sooner then waiting until his ufa or walk year to bring him in. That contract is very attractive

signing Luke Hughes to anything but a longterm extension this summer would be a total failure.
You do know that contract negotiations typically don't include a gun pointed at his head, right?

I'm sure the Devils realize how important it is to get him locked up. I'm also sure Luke sees that his two brothers are two of the most team friendly contracts in the entire sport and probably has his agent screaming at him to not take a long term deal, when it's possible (and even likely) that he'll be worth 12+ per year in 3 years.

It’s not that bad of a contract and if we retain a bit it’s market value. Hamilton is 12th in Defenseman scoring and they definitely need offense for their blue line. I’m assuming their moving on from Ekblad and that leaves their right side very bare.

If the Caps re-sign Chychrun there isn’t a much on the UFA market beyond Pionk and both of them are LHD.

Maybe they swing a trade for someone else. Wait to see if Quinn Hughes becomes available. Who knows.

But Hamilton as Brent Burns-style move for them in the short term actually makes some sense.

Here’s ATP Contract Estimates for the top defensive UFAs:
LHD Chychrun 27, 7 years/7.841m
T-13 (3): 46 GP 13G 20A 33 pts
LHD Pionk 29, 6 years/6.948m
T-13 (3): 53 GP 7G 26A 33 pts
RHD Ekblad 29, 7 years/6.865m
T-36 (6): 44 GP 3G 20A 23 pts
LHD Provorov 28, 5 years/6.395m
T-46 (6): 51 GP 3G 18A 21 pts
LHD Orlov 33, 3 years/4.953m
T-29th (7): 52 GP 4G 20A 24 pts

RFA Estimates:
RHD Bouchard 25, 8 years/10.738m
9th: 51 GP 8G 30A 38 pts
RHD Dobson 25, 8 years/10.511m
T-29th (7): 46 GP 6G 18A 24 pts
LHD Hughes (21) 7 years/8.886m
T-46th (6): 44 GP 4G 17A 21 pts
LHD Byram (24) 7 years/7.273m
T-29th (7): 50 GP 5G 19A 24 pts
LHD York (24) 6 years/5.687m
T-103rd (12): 39 GP 4G 8A 12 pts
LHD Miller (25) 6 years/5.316m
T-117th (17): 44 GP 3G 8A 11 pts
And hamilton is frankly better than Dobson
