Devils discussion (news, notes and speculation) - part III

Actually I still really like the Pesce signing and would’ve passed on Dillon first, both then and now.

Chandler Stephenson is having a catastrophically bad season in Seattle in his first year of a 7 year/6.25m deal, which has a full NMC/NTC and ends when he’s 37. I’m good with missing out on that.

I don’t see Lindholm at 7.750m happening either and that’s 2.25m more than Pesce makes. Not sure how that would work even hypothetically.

I hate our center depth too but if you’re being realistic about last off-season then you’re really talking about signing someone Kevin Stenlund.

Chandler is having a bad season because Seattle’s center depth is so young and he’s taking on an elevated role, never before in his career. They do not currently have franchise centers on their roster. I’m unsure if we made an offer to him and it was rejected but he was someone I liked.

Stenlund is a better fit for our bottom 6 than Tatar, Lazar, or Bastian. He’s a better center than Lazar. Did Fitz really think Haula/Lazar was good enough up the middle? With what help in the AHL? Unfortunate management. But I don’t blame Fitz for bringing Tatar back.

We were up 4.5M with the Marino trade, then added a bit more to get Pesce.

Trying to PM you, but I don’t think it’s allowing me to. Keeps saying “this member limits who can see their profile” or whatever. I even tried to follow you to see if that would let me.

I didn’t know you couldn’t PM certain people. And I know you don’t have me blocked, as you do often interact with me.
I’m sorry about that. I fixed it.

I'd be willing to give anyone a shot on a show me contract if they aren't slow as shit, especially one has the ability to score.

Edge has him as “average” skating for top speed and distance this year.

Edge really needs a way to measure acceleration though, that matters way more than top speed for the majority of the league.

I'm gunna make a T-shirt that says

"Fix
The Bottom
Six"

Because I fully believe that's all this team needs to make it undeniable, doing so would make everything fall into place IMO.

He was literally Vegas' 1C the season before they got Eichel. Let's get real. "Never played this role".

This is crazy copium man.

Stephenson is having a terrible season and the contract is awful. Just admit you were wrong and the people who were warning about him are right.

You guys love to jump to conclusions about the dumbest shit with absolutely no evidence. I can't believe we're complaining about doctors doing more tests and changing a diagnosis when they get more data.
I've never seen an ambulance chaser do that. Nope, not once. And when they do it never pays off for them. Nope, never because our system is so well tuned to avoid that.

You’re right. They won the cup after they traded for Eichel.

Say what you want about Brent Sutter, but after Marty went down in 08-09 they went about a week with Weekes before running with Clemmensen until Brodeur got back.

We aren’t close to being at that point with Allen yet. He has to be giving up more than 3 goals a game to get there.

at the time clemmer became the only other goalie with at least 25 wins in a season. he had 25 that year.

cory twice (26, 27), kinkaid (26) and vitek (33) have done it since

Feels like Saad has been around forever but he’s not quite a geriatric at age 32. His stats have been remarkably consistent and solid throughout his career. I wonder if he fell out of favor with Montgomery or something else happened because Saad doesn’t strike me as a player you’d just cut. If it isn’t too prohibitive from a Cap perspective, I think he’d be a great add.

Statistically Saad is having a terrible year (for him) but there likely would be a 50/50 chance of a major bump from a change of scenery. If cheap, I'd without a doubt take a flyer on him.

I don't understand the people up in arms about trading Mercer. If he's unable to produce playing alongside Jack or Nico then he's a 3rd line winger with middling results making $4M. You're not even getting surplus value on his current contract with that level of play.

I'm in the camp that I consider any trade if it makes the team better now and preferably in the future. The more valuable a player is to my organization the more it would take for me to move him, even if the "value" to an independent observer seems skewed.

There is more to hockey than goal scoring. Timo Meier is a play-driver and a volume shooter. Mercer is neither of those things.

Mercer is not on pace for 40 points. He is on pace for 35 points, which is right around where he finished last season at. His play has stagnated, and I would say has even gotten worse the last 2 years. He is soft on the puck.

He is not 3RW. He averages the 4th most ice time among forwards. 4th in 5 on 5 ice time as well, more than Bratt.
Timo Meier ain't a play driver, I don't see him driving play much this season, but maybe we watch different Devils games.
