Devils discussion (news, notes and speculation) - part III

Just want to mix discussions up,

Would you trade Nemec to Seattle for Wright & Kaako?

Mind you I am in no way a trade Nemec guy(unless it's for a high scorer young guy) n I wouldn't even do for Wright(on draft day after Slaf was stolen from me I did look at Wright) str8 up.

Kaako was always a reclaim project n fits a bottom 6 role here easily

Seems reasonable

I mean, 1C out for who knows how long, 2C injured, starting goalie injured, 3C still injured. If these are anything other than short term injuries, that's going to be a big issue. Given the history, I have no reason right now to believe that Nico and Markstrom might not be on the longer side.

Yeah of all things to jump on the Devils for medically, saying a player is day to day pending further tests isn’t one of them, it’s not like they had to re-break his rib to heal it the way the Devils did with Paul Martin when he had I think a wrist injury lol

Hell I’d rather see them rule him out than run him out there and have him make it worse.

When 4 out of the 6 dman on the backend can’t handle the puck. When you prioritize size and grit over skill.

Interesting. Also interesting to see the different kind of teams amongst the categories. Pretty even mix of good and bad teams in each quadrant

I reckon the Devils are high in the turnover department from the zone since they preach getting the puck out at all costs.

So my question is, do they count dumping the puck out of the zone a turnover? If so then that quadrant makes sense. And I reckon it’s not entirely a bad thing? We do need another good skater on the backend. Whether thats Casey or Quinn(if thats a possibility) in a few years. But I think context is needed for this particular chart, for all the teams.

Keefe also needs to change things up. Being near the kings and islanders offensively is dog shit.

Also, Tom built a seriously flawed team overcorrecting and focusing on grit and size like an idiot.

I don't get this trade rhetoric on Mercer, dude scored 3 goals less than Meier how is 5M more expensive, constantly on PK with good numbers, never missed a single game in his career, he is on pace for 40 points this season, I don't think it's too bad for 3RW.

There is more to hockey than goal scoring. Timo Meier is a play-driver and a volume shooter. Mercer is neither of those things.

Mercer is not on pace for 40 points. He is on pace for 35 points, which is right around where he finished last season at. His play has stagnated, and I would say has even gotten worse the last 2 years. He is soft on the puck.

He is not 3RW. He averages the 4th most ice time among forwards. 4th in 5 on 5 ice time as well, more than Bratt.

I'd really love for someone to make an AI conversation between Mickey and Rocky about Ersson being promoted to Team Sweden.

All I can think of is Mickey asking him if he fought last night and if he won, then asking him who he fought. Rocky says ''Spider Rico'' and Mickey giggles and says ''He's a bum!''.

That's what I think of Ersson making team Sweden, although I'm not sure there were any other options.

Unless Robin Lehner can be cleared between now and then.

I agree with all of that but Dawson is definitely a 3rd liner in his league

Edit: NVM, you are saying his ice time is more of a 3rd liner which makes his numbers look actually worse, I understand

Um, yes. Pretty clearly.

I was in the camp that wanted to just take Wright at the draft. Wright + Kakko would really round out their roster.

Seattle isn't making that deal though.

View attachment 969117He sucks. Find a way to get any value in a trade involving him.
I think for players we see every day, we can somewhat trust our eyes over charts but this chart mostly matches the eye test as well.

If you had just blindly made people guess who this chart was for, people probably would have been guessing guys like Bastian, Lazar, Tatar, or MacDermid; guys considered expendable and treading water at best.

Still want to find a way to get Miller. He's 58.9% in the face off dot. over 20% better than Hughes.

Miller-Hughes-Bratt.

Miller takes faceoffs. Would be huge.

If we are going to add a center now is the time. We can’t risk “waiting for the right deal” otherwise we could see ourselves outside the top 3 in the metro looking in. f*** that. Fitz waited too long last year to do what was needed (adding goalie, firing Ruff). We can’t let it happen again.

Nico is out, go get help.

I think most GMs would take Mercer for their 3rd line. I also think other assets could yield the same return for the type of player we need. Okay, of course, if the offer was right, you have to trade him but that applies to just about anyone on the team. I certainly would not put Dawson in the category of a player we should put on the market or offer. No way I look to trade him. At any point. 20 goals is 20 goals.

Actually I still really like the Pesce signing and would’ve passed on Dillon first, both then and now.

Chandler Stephenson is having a catastrophically bad season in Seattle in his first year of a 7 year/6.25m deal, which has a full NMC/NTC and ends when he’s 37. I’m good with missing out on that.

I don’t see Lindholm at 7.750m happening either and that’s 2.25m more than Pesce makes. Not sure how that would work even hypothetically.

I hate our center depth too but if you’re being realistic about last off-season then you’re really talking about signing someone Kevin Stenlund.
Yep. 100%. The UFA center market was barren in the summer. There was seriously no one to sign. The plan was to go in with Haula as the 3C, and I agree that was the most reasonable plan at the time.

A lot of people here wanted to sign Stephenson. I made several, lengthy posts outlining the warning signs on him. In year 1, that deal looks catastrophically bad. I'm not hearing many mea culpas from the folks that wanted to sign him though. I didn't like the Dillon deal either.

I'm not really concerned. The Devils will make the playoffs. Fitz has until the deadline to reinforce the forward depth and I'm pretty confident he will.

Brother he is not being deployed as a 3rd liner. He plays 18 minutes per game.
