Devils discussion (news, notes and speculation) - part III

I’d consider a Palat and Tatar and Stillman package for Miller. Beyond that pass. Why bring a jackass into a young locker room and why create a problem for Hischier? He’s got enough tough matchups this season he doesn’t need another one on his own team. Vancouver tried this before extending Miller. They dangled him on the market but they overplayed their hand and it was sign him or send him out for a sub-optimal return. My guess is this won’t end well for Vancouver. Either he starts out or they get Zibaejad.

Here's how I am choosing to not freak out:

All the games are close. No one is blowing the Devils out. The team is having a tough time scoring goals and are probably giving up 1 more goal per game because their defense is taking chances and trying to force offense.

If THIS is rock bottom, I'm more than happy. I am also assuming half the team is sick. Maybe more. Some guys might be banged up. I'm hoping Haula was so bad because of his injury... and will come back and play the best he has all year.

We still need a forward. Badly lol.

I’ll be concerned if they don’t beat philly
today. I don’t care if it’s 1-0 in a SO, they need to get a W. Agree w you though.

Pages and pages of wasted conversation. Dougie isn’t getting traded mid-season - this team is bound for the playoffs and that would be a seismic shift in the chemistry, he has zero incentive to waive his no trade clause to go to a worse team on the opposite coast in a different country, and Fitz has way more flexibility to deal him in the offfseason. Not to mention that Miller comes with massive question marks from a leadership standpoint. To throw that into the mix in the middle of the season is bananas. This type of trade isn’t going to happen.

I also doubt (and hope) that they aren’t aiming for a forward who replaces Palat on the top line because wherever they wind up slotting him in the bottom six he is just going to make that line worse, when they should be looking to do the exact opposite (add someone who will improve the bottom six).

What do you guys think about trading for Zucker? He’d give us some much needed added scoring pop. He is having a really solid season (15 goals, 16 assists) on a bad team and is an upcoming UFA. Buffalo has no reason to hold onto him. I can’t envision it being too high of an acquisition cost either.

At the right price I’d love Zucker. He’s not a center, and he plays LW specifically which we have kind of a logjam at, but if you want to goose bottom 6 scoring he’s a really good option, and could pair nicely with a lesser tier center acquisition.

We played this game so many times it's nauseating.

Holtz is a sniper and Ty Smith is a great defenseman too. Joey Anderson et all is the deepest our forward prospect group has been in 20 years... it's tiring
Nenec is 20yo, as 20yo he is doing everything great from what he can, he played in nhl as 19 yo and he doesn't play in nhl only because our defense is healthy when Nemec was right after the injury in the beggining of the season, and our RD core are Dougie, Pesce and Kovacevic.

Just let's stop with this, Jim, please. At least you can call it "let's see how he will figure it out when he will have a call up". Without your traditional bad words about young player who is good. Both Holtz and Smith were players with bad skating, bad mobility and speed. Nemec is skating well and good defensively.

Nemec isn’t going anywhere, JT Miller is not coming here. If anyone gets moved it’s probably Mercer at this point. Or Leni and picks or something.

The team needs to get their heads out of their ass and start playing better. The answer is in the room, as they say.
I wouldn't bet on "Nemec isn't going anywhere". As we get closer to the trade deadline and see which teams are buyers and which are sellers, a rebuilding team would jump at the chance to get Nemec and unload a top forward.

How many players do they trade/upgrade?

One, three, four?

How much change creates a spark and how much causes loss of chemistry with this team?

It will take weeks for a new player to learn a new system and play well within the system.

If they trade/upgrade three players and two don't adjust well, that's big trouble come playoff time.

With that said, a spark is needed and the bottom six needs to be better.

Personally, I'd like to see two changes to the lineup from outside the organization.

I would be really really disappointed if they moved Nemec. He was a ROOKIE and looked like a veteran. The maturity in his game, his size, and his skill package are rare.

Does his game need to make improvements? Does his attitude seem a bit immature? Yes and yes. But those are fixable with a little guidance and patience.

Do not trade this kid.

This is not how things work at the trade deadline. Whoever the top available unrestricted free agent forward is this year, he is not worth Nemec alone. So then you get to thinking about non-UFA trades, and most teams like their forwards and want to keep them.

Two trades I think about when people talk about what Nemec gets back in a trade

1) Sergachev for Drouin - neither was proven at that point and Tampa wanted a defenseman. High end top line potential winger coming the other way - obviously didn’t work out perfectly

2) Byram for Mittelstadt - young promising highly drafted defenseman caught in a logjam, traded for a 2C in his prime. Nemec isn’t quite as Byram’s level yet but that’s more a function of time to me than skill. Plus Byram had those concussion scares

Other comparable trades include Seth Jones for Ryan Johansen (Nemec isn’t Seth Jones though), Hanifin for Hamilton and Ferland (not a comparable package to what the Devils want), Griffin Reinhart for a 1 and 2 (seems like a floor), or Jiricek for 1, 2, 3 and Hunt (prob a bit lower than where Nemo clears)

Wow, I don't read this thread for two days and it's 4000 pages.

Nemec didn't bring up a trade. The interviewer did, and it seems like he handled it quite diplomatically - and there's translations at play here too.

JT Miller is talented but he's 32, and he's an absolute asshole apparently. No thank you.

Quinn Hughes is Vancouver's Dougie, except faster and better. They don't need Hamilton for PP1 and we aren't getting Quinn unless Quinn wants to come here in free agency.

Petterrssseeennn is too expensive, full stop.

Trading Timo Meier (Twitter idiot) - wow. Trading ANY of our forwards (including Mercer here) for another forward seems to be keeping the problem firmly in place.

Nemec and Casey will play here in due time. The only way they do not is if someone blows us away with a trade offer that we cannot refuse (these are win-win trades, often). Kovasevic, Siegenthaler, Hamilton, Dillon will not stop these youngsters from getting here. There's also a ton of trade asset on D not here and not named Nemec and Casey or Silayev for that matter - Misyul, Vilen, Orlov and maybe to a lesser extent Karpovich and Barabosha. Diotte can't stay healthy so we don't know what we have there either.

Nemec is 21 years old in 28 days....this is his D+3.

Your word don't change the fact that this is a former #2 overall in his D+3 playing mediocre AHL hockey. Traditionally that has never been an indication of an elite player.

The fact that he couldn't beat out Kovacevic who came into this season with 143 NHL games for 2 different Nhl teams is an even bigger red flag.

He is 20 yo. He was right from the start of the season. And THIS season is about being 20 yo.

You dont change the fact that he played in NHL as 19 yo defenseman, that he wasnt in the roster because our roster is full and he wasnt in the shape after injury. And you will not change the fact that he is 20 yo defenseman who is PPG in AHL in 17 games after cold start in 7 games and in his circumstances he FACTually cant do nothing more.

He would be in NHL from how he is playing now and how he played before. He cant because Dougie, Kovacevic and Pesce exist.

There are no red flags with beating Kovacevic because for now Kovacevic is playing great. No matter how many games he played before.

I'm not sure how Nemec could have beaten me out much less Kovacevic or anyone else when he came into the season injured and hasn't really recovered until lately.

He's hardly playing mediocre hockey in the AHL - he's got 17 points in 17 games, after starting slowly with 1 point in 7. The only knock on him was the knock on him at draft day that he's a touch physically soft in the D zone in front of the net. He'd hardly be the first finesse defenseman with that issue.
