Devils discussion (news, notes and speculation) - part III

Does your scenario work if Luke gets $9.5 mil per and Kovacevic gets $4.5 mil per? I don’t see any way Luke gets less than $9 mil and he likely asks for something like $10-$10.5 to open. If Kovacevic gets to the end of thr year with steady play the odd fight and say 25 points he will get closer to $5 mil in my view. Just a guess but you have been consistent saying they can keep thr band together and at what point can’t they?
They can keep the band together up to around 13 mill combined for Luke-Kovy.

Beyond that (and even in the scenario they stay at that), the move should still be dump palat to shore up the bottom 6.

Letting Kovy walk as a UFA and sticking to the original team plan is a LOT more likely than some think around here

Bring him home

He doesn't have the point totals, ice time, etc., that warrants that type of contract, even if he might be better.

Faber got $8.5M and he has been better, understand he is older but I don't see what Luke has done that warrants more than this.
????

Luke had 12 more points last year than Power has ever had lol

Okay. You dump Palat and fix the bottom 6. Who is taking Palat's spot on Jack's line? If you're suggesting Grits, we have absolutely no way of knowing if he can even handle playing on that line.

Palat was brought here for the playoffs where he excels. I'm more comfortable with getting someone to play with Jack and letting Palat cook on the 3rd line in the playoffs while moving up to Jack's line for certain situations.

Moving Palat simply causes another hole in the forward group.

Faber is a good comparable for Luke. I'm 100% comfortable giving him the exact same deal tbh.

Grits. Or Haula. Or Mercer. Or Cotter. Or you buy a mid tier rental for a mid round pick.

Jack and Bratts production has been relatively consistent no matter who the 3rd winger is, whether that winger is a star like Meier or Toffoli or a complimentary piece like Haula or Palat. When it's dropped massively is when they play without hamilton

Looks like we are squarely in the middle of Nico Hischier’s annual “quarter of the season where I look like a third liner” stretch.

I love Nico. But it’s hard to ignore this obnoxious tendency in his game to completely and totally disappear for double-digit games. He’s playing PP1, leading the team in ice time (next to 86). He can’t have a stat line of 10 GP 1 G 1 A.

It’s the thing right now that separates him from “quality, fringe all star forward” to “superstar you build around”. I’d really like him to figure it out, quickly.

Nico's last 10 games- 57% xG while playing heavy defensive minutes.

not everything is about goals. Think a little deeper.

Meier-Hischier-Mercer
Bratt-Hughes-Noesen
Palat-Dowling-Tatar
Cotter-Lazar-Bastian

I think Tatar should at least get 3rd line mins.

Could we trade for Buchnevich and sign him? Hed be a good partner for Jack I think!
They need a center. Not a winger. Adding a winger doesn’t really have as big of an impact that people think it will have. Sure it mo Palat down the lineup, but it still leaves a whole in the 3rd and 4th lines which will hurt production. Meanwhile Palat’s production has picked up since mid-November and given there is only one puck I’m not sure how much juice there is to squeeze on that line given the production of Jack and Bratt.

A good 3rd line center probably gets Mercer and Cotter going. It also free’s Nico from has heavy of a defensive responsibilities and matchup which would help that line a bit.

If you are taking about bringing in a high priced winger you are missing the plot.

Devils have won 83% of the their points in the last 3 games, should this be extrapolated out forever to say they’re the greatest?

Same record as Carolina in the last 10 and a better record in their last 10 than the Rangers, who I believe 1 person was saying this spiral may end up with the Rangers finishing ahead of the Devils.

The quality of player matters more than the position they bring in. A good winger would absolutely help this team.

We are at the finite resources part of the build. Position and being able to fill holes and roles on the roster absolutely matters.

Centers can play wing, but wingers can’t necessarily play center. So to leave a center hole on the roster to bring in a winger is irresponsible.

A center would be great but we probably can't afford a quality one that would make a difference on the third line.

A winger that you can play with Haula and Mercer that pushes Cotter down a line would still help a lot and is potentially doable cost wise.

They need a top 6 winger. That pushes Palat and Cotter down and that there creates proper depth.

Jake Evans is who they're apparently interested in as a 3C, but idk if they can afford it.

It depends on the player. If 2019-2020 Blake Coleman was available right now are you going to argue that a current version of Yanni Gourde or Jake Evans would be a more impactful player? It's silly to have a hardline stance that the Devils should only be looking for a 3C and nothing else.
