Devils discussion (news, notes and speculation) - part III

The team needs a center. Spending most of our available capital on a winger would be like an NFL team who goes on a spending spree for skill position players without addressing the offensive line.

NJD with dougie on the ice 5v5 this year: 3.14 goals/60. This would be 1st in the league (WSH at 3.03)
NJD with dougie not on the ice 5v5 this year: 2.09goals/60: This would be 29th in the league.

Anyone suggesting Dougie traded needs to kindly pipe down about NJDs 5v5 offense.
Dougie without Jack Hughes: 2.74 GF/60 3.75 GA/60.

Dougie Hamilton should definitely be traded in the offseason for a variety of reasons.

In my mind it's simply a value proposition between 3 guys.

Kovy
Palat
Hamilton

with the variables being:

How much can we recieve in trade for Hamilton now, how much can we recieve next year
How much does it cost to dump Palat, how much will it cost next year
How much does it cost to resign Kovacevic

If it costs a ridiculous amount (1st++) to dump palat, you pivot to moving/losing one of the others.
If Kovy wants a massive AAV high risk deal, you let him walk.
If a team offers you a quality package for dougie, you move him.
I’ve mentioned this before, but I have my eyes on Dallas as a good landing spot for Dougie. They desperately need a RHD and it may be one of the only teams Dougie would waive for considering they’re a contender, tax free, and he fills an obvious need.

Marchment + Dumba + pick for Hamilton makes a ton of sense for both sides.

Marchment would be an excellent option next to Hughes or Hischier. Devils could keep Dumba as a 7th D or they could buy him out. Both are UFAs after next year so you would get great value for Hamilton and get out of Hamilton’s last two years of 9 million by making this deal.

And 3.74 GF/60 1.98GA/60 when they're together.

Once again, so many complaints about finding a winger to make Jack-Bratt go better, while suggesting trading away the dman they absolutely COOK with.

Yup, that is 100% the kind of trade I would do.

Not sure if I ever heard about this one…

I brought up the whole Lemieux was hated by so many teammates thing last week in the JT Miller discussion that I won't bring up so daddy triumph doesn't yell at me again.

But yeah, it's a professional sport not a book club. If they can help the team win, I don't care if they ruffle feathers.

More than 1 Devils player has come out and said the Devils probably win an extra cup or two if they kept Pep around.

Devils next 3 games are against 3 of the 5 best teams in the eastern conference.

After that they play 8 games in a row against non-playoff teams, including 3 against the Flyers who are currently in a full blown free-fall.

If the Devils are going to make their push to either catch Washington or solidify home ice against Carolina, it's going to happen in the next 11 games

You’re not going to get any agreement from my end. I want no part of JT Miller considering the cost to acquire/hot headed attitude.

Gomer's stories about Pepe coming in and playing on a line with him on the Spittin' Chiclets podcast were hysterical. I imagine he was pissing himself being a rookie.

I would only do it as a one for one for Hamilton in the off-season. I’d honestly also consider Meier one for one too and I would not hate if we did that trade mid-season either.

My biggest concern in adding Miller wouldn’t be how hot headed he is but it would be allocating so much cap space to so few players. The team already struggles as it is being so top heavy, especially up front.

Actually, if I was Fitzgerald, I would run it by Palat (who played with him in TB) and Jack/Luke (who I assume would know the ins and outs of what’s going on from Quinn).

Excuse to mention to my coworker bought me a Cameo from Gomer for an Xmas present.

I don't normally listen to that podcast but Gomer had some great stories. He had a great story about them being in Nashville and there happened to be some modeling convention in town. Jay Pandolfo managed to reel one in, but at some point somebody told the model that Pando was married (he wasn't) and she stormed off. Naturally Pandolfo was mad and was ready to fight whoever ruined his evening. At some point somebody 'told' Pandolfo who the offending party was and which hotel room they were staying in. Gomez was roommates with Pandolfo and was tagging along to see what happened.

Pandolfo starts banging on the hotel door and it ends up being Claude's room; Claude wasn't with the group and started screaming at Pando for waking him up in the middle of the night.

Simon Nemec is ready and waiting. Pretty sure he could be good with Jack Hughes out there too, for a fraction of the price. He was better last year as a rookie at 5 on 5 without Jack than Dougie has been this year.

I don’t think finding Jack another wing is much of a priority. It’s everything else, which would be a smarter use of 9 million dollars.

Dougie Hamilton is at 55% xGoals share this year, exactly in line with the rest of his time in NJD.

And that number has been IMPROVING as the season has progressed.

Nemec was at 52% last year.

I for one like having an elite offensive dman who helps lead us to having an elite power play and generates elite 5v5 offense as well.

Dougie is -1.4% relative to the team. Nemec was +2.1% relative to the team. A rookie.

Yeah, I like those things. I also like 9 million dollars.

Yes, nemec is better in comparison to the rest of the dmen last year than Hamilton has been compared to the rest of the dmen this year.

Now, Dougie on that team last year had a relative xGF% of 5% but let's ignore that.

Now, that involves pretending that Brendan Smith, Colin Miller, Nick DeSimone, Santeri Hatakka, John Marino, and Kevin Bahl were anything even remotely comparable last year to Brett Pesce and Jonathan Kovacevic this year, and that Luke Hughes and Jonas Siegenthaler haven't both been significantly better this year than last
