yeah, I can't get behind the durability stuff in this instance. A guy crashed into him at full speed into the goal. It isn't like he tweaked a groin in practice.

Agreed, just really bad luck on this one. It looked so bad from my seat at the game that I'm still bummed out over it even though the team played great last night.

Would be nice to get lucky and have some good news but this feels like it could end up being like the same movie we've seen so many times before with a great start to the season and then all the wheels fall off and they don't make it.

Need Allen and the rest of the team to step up big time and hopefully we get good news that he's only missing a small time frame. Only 7 games left until the 4 Nations break and then not another game until February 22nd. If they can pull out 3-4 wins during that time period and Marky is back for February 22nd I'll feel a lot better about how this season will go.

No, me and devilsblood had a good discussion. I brought up several factors. You may have been confused because there was information beyond just the number in the points column. Your criticism of Meier was entirely focused on his lack of point production. This is not making things up or putting words in your mouth.

And hey, Meier had a nice game from the third line eh? Couple of points to satisfy you. A primary assist, and a second assist where he hunted the puck on the forecheck and stole it. Near 80% xG. A very solid game.

My posts were about his overall play and seeming checked outness, but you should just tell me bc you're clearly right.

Absolutely. Terrific game and it was in pretty stark contrast to many of his past games. I really think getting him away from watching Nico and forcing him to pick up his own game made the difference. Much like when he came back from suspension, and also in the past when he's been taken off of lines with Jack or Nico.

It's what we've been missing most of the season, and just like I said: we have a pretty good chance to win if Timo, Mercer, Hamilton and the other 4-8 guys actually step up. More sense than spending assets adding a bottom six player.

Fitz could look for a stop gap goalie this season to share time with Allen but one under contract for next season to replace Allen as the backup to Markstrom. Like how he traded for Jake at last year's deadline.

Vejmelka is really the only guy like this that I would be interested in, and he would prob be costly and I am not sure we can afford to pay him next year.

where is he this season?

He's currently buried with Winnipeg's AHL club. Jets signed him originally to be Hellebuyck's backup but he lost the spot to Eric Comrie. Winnipeg waived him and he got claimed by Colorado. Kahkonen got a couple conditioning starts for Colorado's AHL team and one game with the Avs before they decided he wasn't an upgrade over Georgiev/Annunen. Avs waived him and Winnipeg reclaimed him.

I imagine Winnipeg is okay with Kahkonen as their "we hope we never have to recall you" insurance policy since their other two minor league goalies don't have a ton of pro experience.

Grab Suter while we're there
Yeah, I keep saying Boeser and Suter are the package the Devs should pursue, you can add Lankinen into that. Those three would pretty much wrap up the needs of the Devils going into the playoffs. IF, and it's still a big IF, the Canucks wave the white towel. Blueger and Sherwood are alternatives to Suter, but I think the term will keep Vancouver from trading them.

Don’t we have to see what the prognosis is on Markstrom first? If he’s out long term why invest the sort of assets Vancouver will demand for that kind of player package?

The goalie market is goofy until the deadline. There are no back to backs and 13 games until the deadline and there's a huge break for the four nations tournament in the interim. I wouldn't be shocked if Allen started every single one of those games until the deadline.
Did we get a Markstrom update yet? I suspect it won't be until tomorrow at the earliest.

Allen as starting goalie is NOT a recipe for success. The 2017-2018 and 2018-2019 Blues are a testament to that. As soon as they let Elliott go and sent him to Calgary and Allen finally became the guy, he had a pretty weak season and the Blues missed the playoffs to Colorado on the last day of the regular season after losing a head to head game against Colorado. Allen was not good in that game.

Then the 18-19 season Allen was the starter for the first few months and was awful. Binnington was called up and took over and the Blues probably miss the playoffs that year, rather than win the cup if Binnington wasn't called up and had a hot streak in him.

I don't think a rental stopgap goalie adds much to a package.

Maybe a 3rd for a lankinen.

At most a 2nd if you're getting a legit starter

Isnt Nico Daws supposed to backup Markstrom next year?
That was probably the hope going into this year, but that's not at all set in stone. Why? Just because he has a one way contract? That's merely for monetary purposes for him. Not because he's the heir to the backup job.

His play this year (combined with his previous NHL play, which wasn't great, though under less than ideal circumstances) has inspired zero reason to think he's gonna just be handed the backup job for next year.

His best bet would be if he gets a call up to go out there and have a good stretch. That might get him the backup job.

As it stands? No.

There was a Utica guy this morning on X saying that Daws and Poulter are still there and he hasn't heard anything yet about a callup. I wish I could find it but says he's just waiting for something.

They can call up someone late today or tomorrow without an issue, they have a guy to sub in for practice tomorrow.

Markstrom is no spring chicken either. Even if he doesn’t miss a ton of time, better hope this doesn’t derail his season from a performance standpoint.
