More like three, and even finding two where we need them isn't exactly a snap.

we don't need three new forwards.

and yes, finding middle 6ers is very easy to do realistically speaking. We have the high-end talent. The plug and play guys you can find via trade or in FA quite easily each year.

Why did we waive DeSimone?
He wasn’t playing and if the Devils actually needed someone to step in for a period of time, he’s probably behind Casey and Nemec.

So I think it’s courtesy to the player to give him a chance to play elsewhere. Also, Devils have rotated the 7th spot at least one other time, they don’t want the guy in the 7th role to not have played in months.

Who would you target? And who do you think we need to replace from Palat, Haula, and Tatar? I think all three aren't cutting the mustard.

Palat isn't THAT bad, and I dont even like the guy. He has been playing fine hockey the last ~6 weeks. Most every team has a Palat level player playing in their top 6. This notion that we absolutely need another top 6 forward just isnt true IMO. Sure it would be ideal, but we don't need it. What we need is Haula to play like a competent NHL player which he hasn't done for about 2 months.

I would target guys like Brock Nelson, Yanni Gourde, Jake Evans, Ryan McLeod, Mikael Granlund, Jared Mccann (pipe dream), Trent Frederic, Drew O'Connor.

I don't really care about Tatar because he probably isn't in a playoff lineup anyways.

If he was on the third line making $4 mil it wouldn’t seem as disappointing . He’s done ok but he is long on heart and hustle and short on skill at this point.

I don't know - I think Palat is overpaid and on the wrong line, but maybe he could be serviceable since anyone with Jack/Bratt is a guy trying to make space and dig on boards really. He just seems like - despite his last few weeks of playing well - he's lost a step even for that.

But Haula - yes. Tatar isn't likely a playoff guy but then I don't want him playing now! Hence why I include him.

I'd LOVE Gourde and R. McLeod. Gourde-McLeod(R)-Mercer? then Cotter-Lazar-Bastian?

Have they tried Mercer with Jack and Bratt for any amount of time this season? Always want to get people going and stick them with those guys, not sure we've seen Mercer with them yet though, Idk how their styles would mesh, but could be interesting to see.

Mercer hasn’t played much with them, they seem to actively avoid that lineup configuration. I personally think he would work great as a tight area scorer for those two - but I think they would be an adventure on retrievals/exits and the forecheck.

I would also love seeing Noesen get a shot with Jack/Bratt if they don’t like Mercer there for some reason - I think that would juice the 5v5 scoring from the Jack and Nico lines a bit but won’t help the depth scoring lines.

Not only have they not tried that this season, they have never tried it. They have played a total of 18 minutes together 5v5 since Mercer arrived on the team in 2021-22, most of which is probably at the end of a power play.

move Cotter up with Jack and Bratt and move Palat down to the 3rd line

No. This is the worst thing you can do. Even though Haula-Cotter doesn't work, you still get times like yesterday where Cotter makes a great individual play. Palat isn't going to help Haula-Mercer any, and Bratt and Hughes are the two best individual players on the team, there's no reason to add a guy like Cotter to that line.

meh, fair enough. I just want to try it.

It all boils down to Haula being completely useless. It won't really matter who gets put on that line if he is there because he is where offense goes to die. That is why I think 3C is way more important than a top 6 W.

Hey Ftiz, I looking for a goaltender, a leader/defenseman and a strong bottom 6. Fitz, anything else that will improve the team would be welcomed. Fitz, you have done an outstanding job getting the NJ Devils to be a competitive NHL team. Now It is about tweeting the team for the second half of the regular season and the second season of the NHL, called the playoffs.

You can do this Fitz, get your staff to finalize the ideas and plans you and them have been working on.

Then let's get this team marching into the playoffs to see how far they can go into the second season.

Go Devils
