Why would we want Hall? I don't get it. We need mostly bottom 6 types or a Tom Wilson-esque player. I have doubts to how well Hall in his current state would fit in on this team.
Hall would only work if you’re committed to running Hughes-Bratt and a third line forward for the rest of the year.

He would be a terrible fit alongside those two and not being able to play center to have the flexibility to potentially move Haula alongside Hughes-Bratt is also another negative. I’d prefer to target someone who has the skillset to play as the third on that line like Palmieri or Nelson.

That being said, I could see the appeal of running Meier - Hischier - Noesen; Hall - Haula - Mercer; Cotter - Lazar - Bastian behind Hughes. It would be a heavy, hard-working, and tough team to play against, but you’re left with cycling Palat, Noesen, Cotter, etc. on Hughes’ wing.

From Jersey w/ Love
I wouldn't say poise with the puck is one of Dougie's better attributes. Luke's much better on puck.

They do things differently. I think of Hamilton as a bit more steady. Then again he better be cause if he gets caught flat-footed he's done.

At this point I still rather Dougie. I realize, though, we are thinking about the future. I'm just stating as of now I think Dougie is better on the PP1

Hamilton definitely has poise in his own way. Luke knows how to carry the puck, but he still needs to learn when to do it and when the simple play is needed.

Personally, I found last seasons struggles in the 6-on-5 situation versus 22-23 as having a lot to do with missing Hamilton. Luke (and Nemec) just didn’t have the same cerebral ability in the 6-on-5 situation that Dougie shows.

I would contribute a lot of that to experience so it’s understandable.

Part of my logic of moving Hamilton to is knowing that you don’t have just Nemec ready to step in at 3RD, but also maybe Casey.

I think we’re essentially in agreement on this.

You should be doing your due diligence this summer to explore Hamilton’s trade market and Kovacevic’s ask for a new contract. Based on both, you make the decision on if you should keep Kovacevic and trade Hamilton or keep Hamilton and let Kovacevic walk.

I think this summer Hamilton can still garner a return that makes us a better team next year, the following year, I think he’s closer to cap dump territory value-wise.
A lot of factors at play.

Potential returns for:

Casey
Nemec
Hamilton

Luke contract
grits ELC or RFA (what contract ask if we burn this year)
Kovacevic ask

Cost/possibility to dump palat

Bottom 6C market
Sturm, Dowd, Suter, Evans, Eller, etc

middle 6 winger market (avoid term on higher tier guys)

I would take Hall for depth for a cup run. He would be dirt cheap to get. I would imagine a 3rd round pick gets it done. Hall wouldn't be for our top 6. It would be to add a possible scoring threat to our 3rd line. A 3rd line of Hall-Haula-Mercer would be pretty good. It keeps Cotter on the 4th line where he belongs. Add in a legit 3rd line center on top of that and we would be sitting real pretty. Imagine if our lineup was
Timo-Nico-Noeson
Palat-Hughes-Bratt
Hall-(3c trade)-Mercer
Cotter-Haula-Lazar
Bastian, Tatar as extras
That would be an awesome playoff caliber team.

His MVP season was incredible. But those knees aren't the same. I still have his jersey.

I think Fitz should look for a 3rd-line center. Move Haula to the 4th-line center and move Lazar back to the wing.

Eh, maybe. I just don't know that he is what we need. I think at this point I'd rather Tatar there to be honest.

Wait he did this for real? I thought that was just poster sarcasm. Holtz must have been a total knob if they’re still taking shots at him months after going out the door. Or Fitz is still reminding the scouts who talked him into taking Holtz.

Did Fitz discuss Holtz in his press conference today? Someone mentioned that his name was brought up. Am I mistaken? I couldn't find it watching the video.

It was a joke and did not happen.

Feel like Palat might be hard to move this offseason,

I will be more bold and say there’s basically zero chance he gets moved.

Not with a 10 team trade list and 2 years/6m left. Wingers have the lowest value and least demand.

Maybe there’s a slight chance when he has 1 year left but I assume we buy him out then. (I’ve been assuming we buy out his last year since he signed that deal.)

I’d loved to be wrong, and you never know, but you can’t hypothetically plan around Palat not being here next season and pretend that isn’t anything other than wishful thinking.

I don't think either of them are easy moves.

No we don't. We need top 6 help more than bottom 6 help.

I don't disagree, but I don't know that Hall is a top 6 player anymore. I really don't think he fits there in this team. Certainly not with Jack and Bratt. And I don't know that I want Nico always having to cover for him. Hence my Wilson comment. Yeah, there is no one like that out there I know. But I don't condone making a move just because you think you have to and not because the right guy was available.

To tampa: Palat (50% retained)
To us: nothing
To team 3: 2nd from us, 2nd from tampa (they eat 50%).

Or whatever the math ends up being/cost to make it work in there.

Hall makes sense because he'll be cheaper than most of the rentals out there, them not having a first will take them out of guys like Palmieri or Nelson unless they make the trade value via prospects which we don't know how aggressive Fitz gets. Vatrano is another good option if you want a cheaper winger

Once again, the Devils not having a first is going to take them out of the top rentals most likely unless Lou is in love with one of our prospects. That Hall/Haula/Mercer line wouldn't work either at all.

Would we have otherwise been paying a 1st for Kyle Palmeiri? Gross

Palmieri is playing well enough to get a first, him and Nelson will fetch a pretty penny if/when Lou decides to sell. I said it before too, the East bubble is so dogshit that we could get to February and there could be teams that think they can have a week run and make the playoffs. It's gonna be a seller's market imo this year

I don’t see Tampa giving up anything for Palat and it asking a lot for a team to lose a retention spot and 3m for 2 years.

Not a lot examples of that happening.

Retaining 3 mil also means you'd have to find a replacement that is better for under 3 mil for it to be a positive move. I mean I think that's possible but Idk that they do.

Then don't buy a rental beyond a C tbh if that's what the prices are
