One reason I love Jack's contract even more is that I don't think Luke can demand more than his brother... If we can ink Luke to the same contract, we're going to be so wet

Luke can 100% demand more than his brother.

Give him the jersey number 8.6 and hope he accepts

I'm not at all worried about Luke raking us over the coals with this first contract. I think we get a fair bargain like we did with Jack.

The Hughes brothers know the deal and they want to win over being extra greedy.
8.6 mill a year

Fits with the hughes boys jersey numbers and gives him bragging rights at the dinner table

Luke is one of the smoothest skaters I’ve ever seen, his acceleration is ridiculous, his stride is gargantuan, but sometimes when he’s stick handling up the ice it looks like he’s a baby giraffe using a greased up broomstick 😂

Man oh man, watching Luke and Jack playing together nightly and contributing is such a treat. We’re so lucky to have these two guys on the team for years to come.

The Big question is what we do next year and especially after Markstrom is gone. I’m not sure we want to continuously be plugging in at the goalie position but I’m also not sure we want to pay a big price and/or throw a big contract at someone. Would be nice if the solution came internally but I wouldn’t count on that and there’s some risk to hoping for that. Maybe Daws gets his chance alongside Markstrom next year and runs with it? Not sure he’s an elite level talent or anything though.
I'm not too worried about it right now.

I don't think many of us thought in May of 2023 that the Vitek/Schmid combo would falter so quickly and neither would be in the organization by the summer of 2024.

It's fine to think about, but I'm not too worried about it right now.

Ya you were asking for trouble with that thread title. Kind of makes all of us Devils fans look bad.
Well, I don't know if I should admit this given the Devils board used to have a ton of global mods as fans, but the thread title and first post were written in a way to get replies. 25+ years of posting on sports forums has taught me a trick or two.

Also I don't really believe in fan karma - i.e. I don't think fans posting can lead to a team's downfall. Also the past 3-4 games by the Devils have convinced me that this is a talented team that is a playoff lock and hopefully more.

Ya I wouldn’t admit that myself out of embarrassment.

It’s not about karma it’s about not looking like idiots and keeping a certain level of humility. Some fanbases get a lot of slack for stuff like that. We’ve sucked for a long time. We don’t need to start posting stupid threads about the devils being scary the second we’re good again for half a season.

Meh, I think it's fun. We will hopefully get some more bandwagon fans on Facebook, etc who post embarrassing things there and on Twitter. It's part of being a good team. Bad teams have smarter posters because only the truly passionate keep watching the games.

I get what you are saying but there is a reason it seems like the world comes together and rejoices when Toronto or Rangers shit the bed. It never has anything to do with the team itself. I've never enjoyed the "hate us cuz they anus" attitude no matter which side it was on.

Especially since we've had two recent seasons where we looked to be on the upswing only to fall flat on our faces the next season.

I'm going to let this one play out before I start declaring ourselves a true upper echelon team.

We probably could resign Markstrom if he’s still playing well. He will certainly be older but not too old to play as a goalie, especially if Daws or Malek or one of the other prospects has come in and started to take on more work.

We are not an upper echelon team. Can't do that in a half of a season or even one year.

You need a proven track record to be upper echelon team. Making the playoffs twice in the previous 11 years is the exact opposite of upper echelon.

"Up and comer"...dark horse? Maybe?

One thing though is a lot of the upper echelon teams in the East seem to be on a steep down turn like Boston Pittsburgh and even Tampa....so there is a void in the East.

All fair.

But come playoffs, assuming we are still playing good hockey, I think we would be as dangerous as anyone.

what do the prior 11 years have to do with the 2024-25 season
It's about sample size.

Our run of good play is 40 games. 40 games does not an upper echelon team make.
