Devils discussion (news, notes and speculation) - offseason edition

I'm hearing Hamilton and Haula are the 2 players they would like to move on from. We'll see if they can make that happen at the draft?

Anaheim makes zero sense as a trading partner for Hamilton. I know their powerplay sucked this year, but they have LaCombe and Zellweger to play the powerplay for them. Their roles will only be growing.

San Jose on the other hand, makes tons of sense for a Hamilton trade. Or potentially even back to Calgary if Calgary moves Andersson
I could see San Jose, but I dont think he waives for Calgary. I think he is plannoing on staying in the States.

Likely referring to the Kypreos trade board which included Palat and Mercer.

Palat goes nowhere unless he wants to go somewhere else, I think. Mercer I could totally see get moved though.
Send him bac to Tampa, they just resigned Gourde, get the band back together!

That would be the ideal time to make a move. It's a shame to move on from both of them because Dougie is a fan favorite and Haula wanted to actually establish himself somewhere in terms of living space for his family, but it's a business at the end of the day.

Also Calgary media kinda kicked dirt on him on the way out with that "museum" remark. Still one of the more baffling hits I've ever seen.

Where did you here that?
Who knows, but this is kinda common sense. Haula is still serviceable and only has a 6 team NTC. Can easily be moved. Hamilton and Palat have absurdly restrictive 10 team trade lists, but Hamilton could at least have SOME value to a decent team (so he'd actually go)....especially if $2m retention involved.

The chances of moving on from Fitz this year basically hinged on them not making the playoffs at all. I assume next year they'll have to finally take another step towards becoming an actual contender but who knows with this ownership, they do tend to be hands off.

Crazy that Dougie has now spent the majority of his career as a Devil.
Well not the majority of his career per se...just more seasons here than anywhere else which you would have hoped would eventually be the case after signing a seven-year deal lol

Ironically he's still played more games as a Flame than as a Devil though, since he only missed one game in three seasons there and has missed chunks of three different seasons here. Even if you count playoff games, he would have 249 in Calgary and 245 here lol

On Hamilton - worse things could happen for us than not being able to trade him. I get that we have younger options at Right D and that his contract costs a lot of cap. But I think he can still have a few seasons in the league where he's a point per game type guy.

The question mark is purely because of his injuries the past two years. But even last year at the time he got hurt, he was maybe in our top five in scoring (even though his goal scoring was off). Two seasons before he had a career year, twenty plus goals and again was among the scoring leaders on a high scoring team.

Will he return to that form? There's a fair chance yes. That's been his record throughout his career.

Dougie is still a great player.

But for the Devils - with the emergence of Luke Hughes, the need for Dougie has decreased. And with the incredible RHD depth, it makes sense to trade him right now. After his bonus is paid on July 1, Fitzgerald should be able to fetch a nice return for him.

It's not the worst thing, but it comes with the understanding that if you don't move Dougie, it may be very difficult to make any sort of real upgrades to a team that Fitz already said wasn't good enough. There's just not money for it. This team was very Jekyl / Hyde last year pre and post new years (even before the injuries hit). I can't say for sure which is the real team.

Maybe you can shuffle some deck chairs with some of the forwards. Mercer out for a comparable player with a different style or something and that may improve the team. Haula out saves 3+ million, but then you have to replace him and given the current cap, I'm not 100% sure you're actually getting an improvement on haula for that amount of money if it's just a pure cap trade. AFP has a guy like Beauvillier projected to get 3.2 million. Is he a true upgrade on Haula? Victor Olofsson is projected at 3.4. I do like the idea of pairing Haula with a pick for an actual upgrade at the position like Pageau, but I'm not sure what those odds are.

Your best bet for a potential true upgrade is probably moving Nemec (assuming Fitz even has interest in it). Maybe you get someone like Bolduc for Nemec. That shuffles the assets a little bit. Maybe it's enough. I dunno.

Color me doubtful.
Well then I’d be ready to be shocked lol

Teams don’t wait until they’re actually contenders to get youth in as a backup. If you sign Allen again, now you’re searching for two goaltenders next offseason

If the Devils want to stop getting raked over the coals on goaltending costs and woes, we’d do well to get Daws in now before hes waiver eligible

I know everyone including myself is hyped for the Russian, but hes a minimum of three years away. Probably closer to 4-5. In the meantime we need youth to get a chance

This all doesn’t include the cap restraints

Well if they do sign Allen then you might as well extend Markstrom at that point cause you've definitely blocked a younger goalie for the next year at least from even showing they're capable of a backup spot.
