Devils discussion (news, notes and speculation) - offseason edition

Yanni Gourde just signed a 6 year deal for less than $3M per.

I just want to be clear that this contract is NOT the market for 3Cs. Once again, it does NOT set the market for 3Cs. Obvious take before any free website statistician tells you otherwise.
It's a more egregious version of the Chris Tanev LTIRetirement contract.

It’s not that people are paranoid Markstrom will fall off per se, it’s that they’re paranoid (with reason) he gets injury problems at 37, so a backup might be more than a luxury…but I agree it’s time to fish or cut bait with Daws, he was fine in his limited games this year.

For sure, and I completely understand that. But for better or worse, he is here and there isn't really a fallback option that is viable other than Allen who is going to be 35 before the season starts himself.

If Allen is willing to stay for essentially what he made this year, by all means come on back. But I think Daws has earned his right at getting a shot as you mentioned. It's time for us as an organization to make the call with him too.

This is on Fitz. If the team was better, everyone would have taken notice. Not saying it's right, but it's true
If looking at teams instead of individuals, the Devils were the 3rd highest team. The Devils calling card by reputation, imo, was defense this year.

How much higher was Nico going to get if the Devils won 5 more games?

I think that's pretty attenuated. You can say if Nico played better he'd have forced them to take noice so it's on him. etc. It's easy to create a "but for" chain since in theory everything that happens is part of it.

Barkov is so overrated. He missed 15 games, was a +1 on a Stanley Cup defending team, took 751 less faceoffs than Nico and only was 1% better than him and had another Selke candidate on his same team, line and power kill. Nico's usage was also much higher defensively, with a greater share of Defensive zone starts than offensive. Nico not getting in top 3 is disrespect.
He is not. He played above the league in defense. 60 games or 82. He has great all defensive metrics. And he is over ppg player and even with another good two way player he is the player who is making better his partners.
Panthers are playing 3 straight finals. And big part of it is Barkovs game. He is underrated.

Lol. The mental gymnastics some of you go through just searching for a new and inventive complaint is honestly impressive.

If Siegenthaler doesn't get hurt the guy at the cheese factory doesn't lose his bet on Siegs points in fan duel and then he doesn't break his hand pounding the edge of the cheese vat and then the backup won't have to make the cheese and my hamburger with Swiss would be so much better. Thanks Jonas!!

one of Markstroms biggest assets has been his durability. Sure he got hurt last year but it was getting run over and having his knee hyperextended - not some chronic wear injury like a hip problem. There’s good reason to hope he’ll be solid again next season. Thus Dawes as #2 seems like an acceptable call.

This ain't it.

Was sort of joking but still, if the team was better he'd have been in the top 3

You guys really think if this was a 100 point team with momentum heading into the playoffs, and he had the same stats, he wouldn't have been in the top 2/3?

I think what you meant to say is that this keeps things open for a reunion with Palat

I keep holding out hope that Palat will just want to go somewhere else which would allow us to trade him, but I think we are probably stuck with him the next two years.

He's simply not good enough for the cap hit for a contender to take on and I have to imagine he has no interest in going to a place with no cup aspirations currently. His 10 team trade list is far more restrictive because of his play than Dougie's is. I think you can find people who'd still be interested in Hamilton. Not sure that's the case with Palat.

Maybe there's some contract swap type moves we can make, but that may just be shuffling deck chairs.

Maybe but hard to say.. if Nico hit 40 goals and 80+ points and NJ was ahead of Carolina heading into to the playoffs I’d say he’d have had a good chance. It’s such a reputation award it’s hard to handicap beyond the obvious favorite

I take what I said about Barkov. I don't think he's overrated as a player. He really is a great player. But I don't think he deserved the Selke this season. Many Florida fans would say the same and think Reinhart was better defensively. And he played 14 more games. And what I meant by overrated is he will win this award as long as he's in the discussion. I don't think Nico is that far off from him defensively, but I doubt Nico will ever win a Selke as long as Barkov is healthy and the Panthers are a playoff team.

And PK stats are absolute disaster for Reinhardt without Barkov.

I don't know what kind of fans are talking about Reinhardt being better two way player and where they are taking their eyes, how many of them are Florida fans and how big this part of Florida fans is, but Florida is my second-third team to watch in the last three years for obvious reason of amount of games they played. And its Barkov who is their best player to cover a lot of space, play hard and win puck battles, and if they need to than cover specific top line player.

His league stats are on the top level. From players with 500+ min he is number one - number three - number five in xSF, xCF, xGF etc with McDavid, McKinnon, Draisaitl in the mix with a couple of Carolina middle six players.

And he is playing third final in a row. There are stats indications, there is production, there is team success that proves.
Nico is great, but him and Reinhardt are not in the same tier with Barkov for now.

There’s room for a Nico we’re tired of giving it to Barkov award in the next couple years, and he’d have to be a front runner. Just need a good devils year and a Florida injury year after 3 straight finals.
Kinda like when they finally gave Niedermayer a Norris in between the 6 they gave Lidstrom...20 years ago (wow 20 years already!!!!!)
