Devils discussion (news, notes and speculation) - offseason edition

I saw the name Shaw and immediately had flashbacks to the Shaw that was an sssistant here for maybe just the one season in 12-13 after Oates left to take the head coaching job in Washington. He was also with the Sharks before he.

I started to become furious, but then noticed this guy had a full head of hair, while the other Shaw is as bald as Hynes.

I wonder who he’s replaced on the staff?
Every assistant coach bar one was fired and Keefe gets to choose his own guys. You'll never guess in a million years who was allowed to stay.

I wondered for a second if it was Rogalski he was replacing? :sarcasm:

But as I’ve said, the team already did make somebody pay for the goalie issues. They just let it go really under the radar and didn’t announce it. Only they nuked Scott Clemmensen or didn’t bring him back in 2024, while he was replaced by Manny Legace.

Even when they announced the Legace hiring they never announced Clemmensen’s departure. Legace was a goalie coach for NHL Columbus and maybe another team.

Wait, they didn’t let Colliton go? Did they? I believed they kept Sarge and Colliton was Keefe’s hire last offseason.

McGill had been here for 3 years and Chris Taylor was Lindy’s personal hire in his first offseason here.

No, they didn't let Colliton go.

McGill and Taylor's contracts were not renewed. As you mentioned, they were holdovers from Lindy's staff. Brylin is obviously an exception as well.

Rogalski is still here also.

Never mind. I forgot they let McGill and Taylor’s contracts expire. My mind is well into offseason mode.

I confused him with Andrew Shaw for a brief moment and thought 'holy f*** he looks awful'

LOL if it was just a matter of him ‘not liking the coach’ he wouldn’t go overseas because of it. He’s going overseas because he’s no longer an NHL caliber player.
plus closer to home

plus honestly, i'd rather be playing in switzerland than in the US if money wasn't an issue (which i'm sure it's not for him)

He’s living the life: make millions of dollars overseas in the most upper echelon league in the world, and now he gets to go back to Europe to still make a ton of money and likely dominate at a game he still loves.

I’m guessing not a lot of people have flashbacks involving Matt Shaw lol. I do not remember him. (sorry Matt!)

I’m guessing Tatar got a two year contract and probably knew he wasn’t getting a two year deal in the NHL, so he took that deal even before going to the market over here.

I think a lot of people gave him too much shit. He certainly wasn’t the player this past year as he was two years before that, but he’s older now and time seems to have taken that away.

There’s not a whole ton of players older than Tomas Tatar left in the league. Especially forwards. So it’s not surprising.

idk how an offer sheet for Peterka could work, Buffalo can match virtually anything for him and its not like they need draft picks. maybe Lindy could put in a good word for Mercer as the base for the deal lol
Yeah, an offer sheet would be tough to make work. Far more likely he's straight up traded gets an offer sheet.

I don't think baugh has any actual internal insight, but interesting that he thinks a Dougie deal is unlikely. Without that deal you can't really make "big changes"

This isn't surprising and remains a very plausible outcome. As I mentioned previously, if Palat and Hamilton wanna stay in NJ, all they have to do is submit a 10 team trade list that looks like this: DAL, EDM, NYR, VGK, TBL, FLA, TOR, CAR, WSH, STL/COL/whoever. Good luck moving them if that's the case!

Complete dumbass Tommy Fitz has really boxed himself in here. Hands out clauses like candy on Halloween to depth/aging players. Even better, this jabroni USA hockey nepo GM clearly hasn't learned a thing because he just did the Kovacevic contract at RD with another NMC that further compounded issues/limited flexibility....

You are stuck in the past. Any sizable contract signed as a UFA will contain some sort of movement clause. I expect you to continue to just repeat the same 3 points you make over and over without listening to anyone, but this is the price you pay to sign players - they get NTCs and NMCs.

I honestly wouldnt have had an issue with Tatar coming back since he would be cheap depth and really wasn't bad for us last year.

He played effective minutes, and while he definitely can be replaced, replacing him cheaply might not be super easy.

Haula and Lazar are guys that were the problem in the bottom 6. Not Tatar

Yeah I’m no Fitz fan either but at best if you want a deal without a NTC be prepared to add on yet another million or two per year and the contract would really be untradeable, NTC or not. In a cap world pretty much every GM opts for some sort of no movement tradeoff to lower the cap hit and/or be a tie breaker, this is not exclusive to Fitz.
