Devils discussion (news, notes and speculation) - offseason edition

Seguin could play on Jack-Bratts line and win faceoffs while playing the wing? He's a stud in the circle.

(probably more involved in the deal but that would be non cap impacting futures probably)

I have a fair question regarding all of the trade proposals and signing UFA/RFA's.

Where the F are they going to find the cap space to sign anyone????

Sign Luke and Glass. How much $$ is left ??

If you say you're trading Palat, Haula, Hamilton. To where ? Who wants these contracts? We don't. Are they going to have to include their two second round picks ? Throw in Dawson?

No one is having reasonable conversations. How do you get these guys with no cap space? Who wants our salary dumps? What would it take to trade them? What teams? And what players have NMC/NTC 's and what teams would want them ?

All great questions for free website statisticians. They missed out on Chandler Stephenson last year so they’re doing mental gymnastics trying to find a 3C this summer. They also never understood why MM was a core player and are shocked that we got steamrolled in the playoffs. They’ll say it’s due to injuries and they’re right, but they’re willfully ignoring how bad the full, healthy roster played from December 21st onward. I like making fun of them, while Fitz is too busy making fun of us fans.

Awesome first period by the US, Markstrom kept Sweden in the game or the score would be even higher then 2-0 but the second goal was one he would want back.

It's insane how long it's been since the US has been in the final, need to play a solid 2 periods and change that!

There are a lot of reasons to save Silayev. You can check Hedman-McDonagh-Sergachyov minutes in their time together.
Hard no to trading Silayev. No to trading Nemec. I like Casey and his potential but ok to trade him. He becomes redundant when we bring in Quinn. There would be no PP time for him with both Hughes boys. From a roster construction standpoint, Nemec may be the most important of the three (need to replace Dougie on the right side).

Eventually….
Quinn-Kovo
Luke-Pesce
Silayev-Nemec

Not sure where Siegs fits in to this. Love that team friendly contract.

There are teams like Buffalo who doesnt have right defensemen at all. San Jose really need PP QB on the right side. Their fans saying they would like to acquire Hamilton without any 1st round picks from our side, just land him for free. Dallas have some issues with right side. Ducks, Islanders, Kings have issues with power play too.
Dougie is more moveable than we think. The only problem is his NMC.

Casey is my last player on the list of our young D core(after Luke, Nemec and Sylayev). I like him a lot but I would start the trading negotiations from him. I understand the level of his potential but we already have Luke and its look like we will be in bidding wars for Quinn. May be we should use Casey years on ELC, raise his value and than trading him. Or just see how it will go. Sometimes you need less to find right players. With Quinn on the track there are not a lot of cap space now, not a lot of cap space in the future for one more big player. I would like to find guys who stuck on a good team, needs to change of scenario. We dont need to trade Casey for a guy like Turcotte if they really want something like Kovacevic/Dillion/Hamilton from us.

I would trade Silayev for a guy like Larkin. But I dont think Yzerman will trade Larkin at all.

I don’t think anyone is willfully ignoring the decline in play after the new year. Somebody posted earlier that the team wasn’t really all that healthy for much longer than December though. Regardless the team that showed up in the playoffs was better than the team that coasted thr second half of the season. Hopefully they can build off that.

there is really no shot you would get Quinn without including at LEAST one of Silayev/Nemec

now, you can say you don't want to do that, and that is fine I guess, but yeah.

Markstrom benched for the 3rd period. Not all his fault but he had some goals he could have stopped and Sweden needs some sort of change.

US is playing so damn good. Another 20 mins and they are in their first final since 1934!

Fools errand to compare two players on two different teams, let alone players who play different positions full time.

For fun, what‘s the difference between 0.42 and 0.6 first assists? Like when you read that, what do you walk away with understanding? Or 0.8 vs 1.09 total assists?

Do you watch the games or read the spark notes?

Congrats. Really surprising it took so much time.

12 straight semi finals losses.... Not going to lie I looked at flights really quick but it was way too expensive. Would love to go this tournament one year but it's so hard to swing it / plan it because I really only want to go for the knockout games / do tourist stuff but also always have to wait to see what the Devils do as well.

Figure one year I'll plan a vacation around the knockout week and just do even more tourist stuff if they get knocked out early.

Is that really true?
Yes, but for a large portion of that time the IIHF didn’t use a playoff format. They did win silver in 1950, but that was their last top 2 finish (not counting the 1960 and 1980 Olympics, which were technically also world championships). And up until the 70’s (when Canada boycotted) pros were banned.

In modern times though the US has never prioritized this tournament. They usually bring the youngest roster. Even this roster has I think only has 2 players from the 4 nations (Swayman and Werenski, and Swayman was the 3rd goalie). Of course USA Hockey has progressed where a full B team can compete.
