Devils discussion (news, notes and speculation) - offseason edition

And maybe Quinn doesn’t come. Maybe he gets moved to a Florida or somewhere that contends or wins with him. Maybe he grows a bit older and meets someone, settles down where he is. Maybe Luke signs straight to UFA and the boys have ideas

Or maybe he’s set on coming here in UFA.

I am building this team going forward with him as a possibility, not a probability. He wont be offered to us, at any point, for anything short of a pot of gold. A ~8m Norris-winning defenseman who can be retained on…

If he comes, he comes. Let’s not rush things and finally let New Jersey be a destination players CHOOSE to come to

Devils could use someone like Matty guy is a warrior and exactly what you need in the playoffs. Get his brother here

Honestly people saying Bennett will be overpayment on his contract who cares as long as you get this version of him for 3-4 years you take the hit on the back end.

sure

now, why would the Flyers trade a guy they just signed longterm to a division rival?

The only way we get anyone from the Flyers is if the team they trade him to flips him a la Rantanen going from Colorado to Dallas via Carolina

It'd probably be the other way around, I'm not sure we'd necessarily be on his radar. Seemed like his second career in country music led him to sign in Nashville / get bought out by Nashville as they thought he was getting distracted. Music appears to be a factor with him subsequently signing with Dallas. So we'll see if Duchene chooses to leave the region.

From a hockey perspective, Duchene would be great fit depending on the contract.
Get ready to take up ska, Matt.

I am pleased that the Devils hired Brad Shaw as assistent to Keefe. Shaw was an assist coach in Philly and then became interm coach he wasn't selected as head coach so he became available for the Devils to hire. He wanted the head coaching job in Philly and when he wasn't selected he did not want to stay with Philly as the assistant. So welcome to the Devils, Brad

Quinn Hughes doesn't represent a need, at all. Yes, he's an incredible player, yes he will make the team better, but his coming here would create a lot of dumb issues - is the top power play the Hughes brothers and two other players? Is Luke okay with playing PP2 for the rest of his career? How does this affect any sort of power dynamics on the team moving forward, knowing that the Devils basically have 1/3rd of their cap tied up in 3 players who have aligned incentives more than any other group of 3 players?

I don't think people talking about trading guys like Nemec and Silayev realize that once those guys are gone, that is it. The Devils would be basically done having high-value assets outside of the NHL and this is the team they are rolling with; they're basically in Tampa Bay mode from that point forward. I don't think that's at all a good idea, especially not when Hughes might come here for free in 2 seasons.
This is an excellent post. Really. I'm not paying the price for him now at the expense of ANY higher end prospect we have because there is nothing behind them. It's not like we have a surplus. Let him show how much he wants to play with them and sign as an UFA. Basically giving the keys to the club to the Hughes family will almost certainly be something that other players see as potentially problematic as well. I'd love Quinn here but I'm not paying the price prospect and pick wise.

You comparing Quinn Hughes and 2OA pick Simon Nemec with Urbom and Gelinas?

You're probably forgetting how everyone was dreaming of the incredible defense with the prospects, which was the whole point. Quinn is obviously already established, Luke as well somewhat. The rest are still very "remains to be seen"

and no, I don't give 2 shits about draft position. Prospects are prospects.

You are messing the level of prospects. On my taste of course. Pesce is quite good defenseman too btw.

Bennett is overrated. I’d take him on the team absolutely but you won’t catch me paying more than like 5M for the privilege. He’s worth a little more than that maybe but that contract has grenade written all over it.

Somebody is gonna give him 8 if they win the natty
In terms of florida forwards I'd want, I'd probably go 8 deep before I got to Bennett.

Erod and Eetu are bargains at 3 mill providing great value. (if a trade could be made here I'd go after them)

Lundell and Barkov are clearly better than bennett, especially defensively.

Reinhart, Marchand, Verhaeghe and Tkachuk are legit difference makers, even as marchand ages.

I expect florida lets him walk and moves Lundell up, who's already better.

The palat deal was a year too long, but we needed a player like him when we did it.

I think he would have earned his money in the postseason if we were healthier and lasted longer.

Either that groin injury really screwed up his overall speed longterm, or he was bound to decline like that.

I agree, absolutely, when he was signed, we needed a player just like him. I think it is a bit one of those unfortunate situations that didn't pan out because of the initial long injury + how the rest really panned out.

But for any one to pretend we didn't need a veteran like him on the team, particularly at that moment in time, would be lying to themselves.
