Devils discussion (news, notes and speculation) - offseason edition

Marner would be interesting but have no idea how the team would make room for that. We need more than marner - we still need a center.

Assuming we could dump Dougie and buyout Haula, kinda like this as a baseline of a team:

This has 3.2 million in cap space left over, not sure how much Giroux would cost as a UFA so just add there (I didnt bother adding the years)

Make a list of every good center under $5 million on a bad team and go down it offering our next first for 50% retention
What team is actively trying to not be competitive next year? Even San Jose I think is ready to try to be decent. Islanders need to regroup which makes Pageau a nice target, but a 1st for one year of a 32 year old pageau at 50% retention I'd be unhappy with even if I think that's possibly below the going rate.

Who would we trade for Roy? He would be a nice add as a 3C. Under contract for 3 more years at $3 mill per.
With Karlsson, Hertl and Eichel it just seems overkill for their 4C tbh. I think he can be cheaper then you think BUT I would offer them like our 2nd + 3rd in this years draft. If we have to throw in a prospect so be it.

I dont think he would be that pricey and Idk why, I just see them clearing cap for Marner this offseason

I know that we got Cotter out of the deal and that it's been working better for us than Vegas, but only a fool willingly approaches them for a trade.

I visited hockeydb and saw Mercer as the most recent popular profile. I thought some trade happened. Opened twitter and there were no news about him... only habs talks.
Habs are the same. Sorry for this link.

that trade makes absolutely no sense from NJ's perspective. and I dislike Mercer probably more than anyone on this board lol

I’m not quite sure I get the Mercer hate and think it has more to with not meeting the expectations people had as is often the case with exciting first round picks.

He’s underwhelmed but he’s still a solid player who is always healthy and works hard. I think it’s entirely feasible he finds more offense again at some point, he’s a versatile player, and he’s probably worth what he’s paid.

Should we be counting on him being a top 6 forward? Not at all but he’s not the worst fill in there when players get hurt and I don’t see any good reason to rush to ship him out. There’s far bigger issues and players aren’t that easy to replace.
