Devils discussion (news, notes and speculation) - offseason edition

I've actually supported bringing in kakko two seasons ago... i think we can really get something from him here.

Evidence shown in Seattle....

since we throw away 2nds like nothing, f*** it... offer sheet him!!!

Takes two to tango with offer sheets. Either a guy is disgruntled with his role or unhappy with negotiations. Seemed like Kakko was happy with his change of scenery. Would surprise me if he was willing to be on the move already. Plus Seattle has plenty of cap space so they wouldn't choke on 4.6 million like Edmonton did with Broberg.

I wonder if they keep him given they have a prime example that he struggled when dealt to San Jose in the Meier trade. Then put up good numbers the following season.

It seems like he’s just not cut out for the deadline acquisition role as he takes some time to adjust.

They probably keep him because they're not likely to do better in free agency, but it feels like a trade they made because they thought they were upgrading somewhere - that San Jose just called and offered this guy and they said yes because who offers up players this age for trade in this way? - and it turns out they really didn't have a spot for him. It's just very weird to trade a 2nd and a roster player for a guy and then use him 10 minutes a game to start out with.

Boq and Zets are solid bottom 6 depth, they don’t suck

Boqvist is again in the scratch suite for the playoffs, even though he's added a physical element to his game over the last 2 seasons. He lost his spot down the stretch. He's certainly not good.

What about Jack Quinn? Buffalo has JJ, Byram and the rapist’s brother as RFAs to sign.

Boqvist is invisible most of the time.

He's certainly not good.

Yet he was good enough in the first half to get a contract for next year lol...funny thing is it seemed like his game fell off right after he got the extension.

I don't know if we'll have the cap space to get involved with offer sheets. It's one thing for St. Louis to get Dylan Holloway at 2.29 mil, but you'd have to get pretty high on that 4.6 mil tier to make Buffalo think about not matching. And at that point, is Quinn a 4+ mil player?

That's the difficult thing about offer sheets. Takes a lot of things to line up:

- disgruntled player
- original team has cap issues
- you don't risk disrupting your internal salary structure

We’re really pining for Jesper Boqvist? Lol
People here pine for every player that was on the 2022-23 team and no longer here. Except maybe Severson and Graves at this point, think this board has collectively gotten over them leaving for the most part because of how the D played this year.

Funny thing is few of them are doing particularly well atm. And everyone's coach-in-waiting Brunette isn't either lol

I'd be surprised if Dougie is traded this offseason. Guy his age with no cups isn't going to waive for a bottom feeder. $9M contract with injury issues could make other teams weary. Ten team trade list (Not a 10 team NO trade list) is easy to game. Heavy retention almost makes the juice not worth the squeeze.

I feel like if it happens, it'll be ugly for us.

Boq would have been 8th or 9th in points on our forward group while providing good skating. No kidding we are pining for these run of the mill players, thats how bad Fitz left the forward roster entering the season. You all like to miss that point.

The bottomline is, we need more speed and production coming out of our bottom 6.

Is Boqvist better than Dowling? It's not obvious he is/isn't but I think the bigger issue isn't losing Boqvist but not having guys that fit his profile 4 years ago. The team has almost no young talent on cheap deals that can step in provide the lineup a jolt even temporarily in case of injuries. Other teams don't trot out 34 year old journeymen with 100 career NHL games.

A lot of this is bad drafting and maybe Utica development. Also Fitz maybe is going to trade away more young talent (Casey? Hameenaho?) and draft picks to further thin out this pipeline. Fitz is on thin ice and needs to fix a lot of problems and the pool of young talent is shallow. It's a recipe for disaster this offseason.

What about a Jack McBain offersheet? Is he even eligible, I don’t know the rules.

10.2(c) RFA like Luke aren't eligible for offer sheets due to lack of service time. Otherwise RFAs are eligible to sign.

Utah has plenty of cap space with most of their notable guys signed for next season. Doesn't seem like a team to target with an offer sheet. And something I always ask with offer sheets is why not work out a boring old trade instead?

f*** it, let’s sheet Kakko. It will only cost a 2nd

It’s almost worth it just to troll the rags when he pots 30 playing next to Jack
Can't see NJ offering enough that Seattle wouldn't match. I'd totally be down for a trade though.
