Devils discussion (news, notes and speculation) - offseason edition

Yeah it's pretty cool and all the pics of the kids painting is really sweet.

This one got me though, holy hell we're a total mess.

NJ not being there is my only complaint, he was there a few years ago and hasn't been back since. With how many kids there are it seems like a no brainer but I don't get it.

Being able to go through the locker room is nice too.

Fitz should be trying to land Isaac Howard. He’d have a pretty good shot to play here and we could throw them some decent D prospects/picks.

I don't really think the timing works. If Howard goes UFA in 2026, sure, the Devils should give him a max ELC offer, but I don't think it makes sense for next season.

Hmm - why not? We definitely have a spot for him if he wants to jump into the NHL right now.

Clune has one year under his belt as an assistant coach with Anahiem, played for the Marlies 7 years and with the organization for at least 10. Gee I wonder who's recommending him.

I don't know why tweets from nobodies get traction here (or why they are posted), and I don't understand why people overreact to news that isn't news. If Clune gets hired by the Devils, it's news. One guy saying that Clune will draw interest from the Devils because he was a kind of player-coach for the Marlies under Keefe isn't anything.

Canucks fan here: Just curious, What would you guys give up to get Quinn Hughes 2 years early?
Thanks!

When you make a roster do one with Luke at $9.5 mil per. I don’t see him agreeing to anything long term for less.
I would have agreed with this statement in december.

After that he was frankly just not that good and it was a massive reason why the team faltered the way it did in the second half

Anaheim has no players, of course their PP sucks.

People were freaking out about hiring Colliton based on his previous coaching tenure and he turned out to be a great hire.

Some of you are real eager to throw yourself off a building for no reason. I know using your brain is hard but can you at least try before you post something?

Honestly, some of our fans in here will get mad and say we’re giving up too much because why give up so much for a guy that already wants to come here, and a GM with no leverage, because he’s already publicly run his mouth and blah blah blah.

But realistically, a first round pick, one of Casey/Nemec, Hamilton (for salary reasons) and maybe Mercer if they really want, but I think including Mercer may be too rich for the reasons other people will say including Nemec is too rich.

There are many reasons why the team faltered in the second half of the season but this has happened every year for the last dozen years. Some times we hold on to make the playoffs (2018 and 2025), but usually we don’t. We haven’t made the playoffs in back to back seasons in a long time, which made last season and the second half of this season very disappointing.

Chief among the reasons why we falter is because we have no depth. Can’t lose a core player like Michael McLeod and wait 1.5 years and admit you have a depth problem. This is on your general manager. He tried using the injury excuse (as we predicted) but he’s kidding himself if he thinks the problem started in January. Poor Keefe, he has a dunce for a boss.

I doubt they move Dougie now since Kovy is going to be out for a while, they're not going to run a Pesce, Nemec, Casey right side.
Reading between the lines initially, it seemed to me like Kovo’s injury could keep him out until 2026. This could put Fitzgerald in quite the conundrum and certainly alter his offseason plans with regards to Hamilton and Nemec. There is extremely low probability that both are gone and a real chance that neither is shipped out. I really do not want to trade Nemec so that leaves Hamilton. Like you said, there’s no way Fitzgerald is going into the season with a RD of Pesce/Nemec/Casey. Maybe he brings in a temporary plug for third pair RD but I think the preference would be to start Nemec out there. We really need that 9m freed up from Hamilton though to bolster 3C and other spots. Should be a fascinating summer.

I have things to say but they will be misconstrued so I'll keep them to myself. Suffice to say I'm not surprised this happens all the time here and everywhere.

We really don't need 9 million in extra space unless you want to waste it all on a "top 6 winger" who will have infinitely less positive impact on Jack/Bratt or Timo/Nico than Dougie does.

NJD (assuming approximately 8 mill to luke and a full 22 man roster and nobody dumped) will have 2 open roster spots (a 3C and a 4RW) and 3.5 mill to fill said 2 spots. If you need 11.5 mill to fill 2 bottom 6 forwards, you're doing it wrong (and hint, that's how you end up with Ondrej Palats and Erik Haula and Brenden Dillon type contracts that we complain about in the first place)

If you don't trust Erik Haula to be a 4C. then you dump him and replace him with a different 4C (at around 2 mill ish saving about 1 mill in cap)
If you don't trust Palat to be a 3rd line winger, then you dump him and replace him with a 3rd line winger (I'd pray you aren't spending more than 4 mill at this slot so +2 mill there, find a warren foegele type)
If you're looking to spend anything more than 1.whatever mill on your 12th forward, you're doing it wrong.
Or you could look to send Dillon to Timbuktu and get an extra 2.5-3 mill there (assuming a Forbort/Kovacevic type acquisition as a 7D)

So that leaves 2.5 mill for a 3C (or as much as 9.5 with other changes). If you believe that's glass, I'd slot him there for that money. If not, you're likely best buying retention.
