Devils discussion (news, notes and speculation) - offseason edition

Bennett would fill a couple of needs, but he's gonna get the double multiplier of Rings In The Room and Grit/Dirty on his next contract that somebody will probably regret.

I don't have enough faith in Fitz to believe this team isn't gunna be the one to regret it

He's not in Florida to be there for high point totals. He's there for above average 2C play mostly through his grit/toughness to play against. Similar to what Palat was in TB those years, when you pay those players a premium a UFA contract then you're also expecting points to go along with it. Bennett is going to get overpaid to the point where you expect 60+ point years when he's never DONE THAT ONCE IN HIS CAREER.

Not to mention, Florida pays guys less because of the non tax stuff. A matching contract from the Devils would be 2-3M more AAV.

Boeser at a cheaper rate, maybe Palmieri would make more sense through UFA. You don't build a team through UFA anyway like I've said all day today. Trades/offer sheet for your big pieces is always the route. UFA should be depth in the bottom 6.
fundamentally disagree about the getting paid only for points. there is a misunderstanding here about this (Timo) when you pay for certain attributes and players with a rare combination of skills. you basically mentioned this in your post. we already have the scorers in our top6 and bennett probably gets better point totals here anyway if he gets to play with jack. fitz did a good job on the contracts of our top4 and there is no problem to overpay a bit for a missing piece. its all about quality now then average. boeser or palms woud be terrible and much more like atje palat signing, not what we need/to many warts in their game

The problem is, they have so many damn needs up front, not just 1 player. They need to pay less and get more players. Getting 1 of Bennett and then the rest of the players being Tatar/Dowling/Lazar is not gunna work

Just staying healthy would cure a lot of their ills. Sure I’d like a real 3C and a top six wing with the game to mesh with Jack and Bratt but a full season from their top players that doesn’t end in shoulder surgeries will be a big help.

I mean, if your goal was to beat Carolina sure. Even fully healthy they aren't getting far with their lack of depth they had this past season. It needs more help. I don't think the answer is just 1 Bennett.

You don’t know how thr role players will respond. It’s not like you expect Nosek Greer and Loustrainen to be your offensive leaders most games.

Quinn isn’t a thing. They just hired a coach for the sole purpose of making him happy. He isn’t getting dealt this offseason.
Regardless of if it's as a rental in '26, '27 or we sign him, if he comes here, we need ELC contributors that do more than what Mercer has done.

Not just that, but also how many big goals. I honestly don't remember for Bennett but Palat had some big ones.

Bennett scored the goal in G6 v Rags last year in a 2-1 W, I remember. He had a few goals in that series. Bennett, again, is more vital to Florida than any other team. He's one of their engine players when guys like Tkachuk, Barkov, Verhaeghe, Reinhart aren't having their best games (few and far between) then a guy like Bennett's play style can rally a group. I don't think the Devils truly need that, they need bottom 6 depth. Mercer could legit be our version of Bennett and for cheap if he ever got his head out of his ass.

There is a video floating around where they covered some bits and pieces from the Devils draft that year. One scout excitedly referred to Salminen as “the first line center”. Fitz sort of noncommittally nodded and they picked Salminen. First highlights of him I saw and he moved slowly just no urgency. I was disappointed and he’s been underwhelming the few times I’ve watched him since then.
Thanx.
The Devils will not be inviting Samu Salminen to camp because he is a college student and will almost certainly be enrolled in classes and taking part in practices for his college team. I don't see any reason why they wouldn't sign him at the end of his season.
Thanks
eliteprospects doesn't show him as a Denver player for '25-26. They usually do if the player is committed. That's what sparked my interest

Household name ex-Devil AJ Greer with an all-time post game interview tonight. Check it out

I agree however Foote is not even their ‘rebuilding coach’ like Lindy was for us. He’s a long-term interim, so I’m not overly confident this changes much for Quinn aside from maybe not being dealt this summer. Vancouver has shown itself to be a pretty embarrassing franchise.
