Devils discussion (news, notes and speculation) - draft and FA edition

If Gritsyuk looks great in camp and wins a spot in the top 6 then great, but I don't get why some people on here act like you can't have offensively skilled players on a 3rd line.
You can, but if we try to roll a defensive oriented 3rd line, and a lot of people want to see that so as to take some of the workload off Nico, then Grits, especially in year 1, probably doesn't fit.

They can run a balanced third line then can be used both offensively and defensively. Devils don't even have the personnel to run a shutdown third line.

Would depend upon the center acquisition, as well as a potential winger acquisition.

But Bratt, Meier and Mercer are all guys who could handle defensive responsibilities.

I'd say Palat could too, but that is probably stretching the facts.

Lankinen getting 4.5x5 is so crazy lol. Even a half retained Demko is 2.5. We really don’t have 2.5 that we can spare on a goalie.
I can totally see the goalie position going belly up again.

Markstrom is another year older and missed a decent stretch last year.

Nico Daws has proven not to be good at the NHL level, save for 5 NHL games last year. Much like Scott Wedgewood’s 2015-2016 and Scott Clemmensen’s 2003-2004.

The best thing I can say for Nico Daws is it feels like he has more shootout wins than any other Devils goalie over the last 4 seasons lol.

Wedgewood has gone on to have a decent career as a traveling #2.

And I don't think Daws has proven anything at the NHL level. Good or bad.

I actually liked this for the most part. The goalies could be an issue but something has to give to improve the forwards.
Not the 2- 2nds part! Avs are in cap hell, it wont take that much. Only paid a 2nd to get him when his #s were better. Coming off an injury postseaosn wher he did not play a bunch. Talk to CBJ about using one of their 3 retention slots for a pick/prospect to eat 50%. They have $40M to spend, FLOOR $70.6M

You could also make the point that Clemmensen had a decent career in the same way.

But neither had much of an NHL career until years after those 4-5 game years that I cited.

Both were close to 30 years old when becoming NHL regulars. Over 30 in Clemmensen’s case.

Palat contract has to be moved. Fitz is going to get bigger.
I hope names (posted this already, but added a few) like these are considered:

Big move at top 6
JJ Peterka
Mason Mctavish
Morgan Geekie
Owen Tippett
Cutter Gauthier
Ryan McLeod

Cheaper contracts bottom 6
Jack Quinn
Nicolas Roy
Beck Malenstyn
Kevin Stenlund
Jack McBain
Kiefer Sherwood

More realistic
Shane Pinto
Ross Colton

You have to take the risk the goalie situation MIGHT blow up over paying too much on the goalies and going in with a forward situation that WILL blow up

Just the concept. It would also depend if there is a bidding war. But its the concept of getting Colton for no roster players all picks and prospects that would be good for this roster.

I don't get why people talk about 2nd vs 3rd line when in reality their ice times are very close at even strength typically

Gritsyuk will be in the top 9. Thats all that matters.

Because on our team top 6 plays with Nico and Jack. Timo and Bratt will also likely be with those 2, and thus playing top 6 means you will be with talented players. We don't yet know who the 3rd line center is, but it's unlikely he will be as good as our top 6 guys. Same for third line wingers.

If we get a decent 3C, bring in another talented winger, and Grits can create offense on his own then that changes the dynamic.

It's kind of a big difference on this team though, playing with Nico/Jack as opposed to playing with ????

I wonder how common this is. Goalies who struggle to catch on in the league until their late 20's early 30's and then settle in as solid enough backups.

I still keep an eye on Kahkonen. UFA. Signed last year for $1mil, doubt he gets much of a raise beyond that.

What about Jordan Kyrou?

"2. Jordan Kyrou
Right Wing, St. Louis Blues
Age: 27
Stats: 82 GP, 36 G, 34 A, 70 Pts
Contract: 6 years remaining, $8.125 million AAV

Scoop: Kyrou joins the board as a player just days away from his full ‘no-trade’ clause kicking in on July 1. He’s been a very productive player, averaging 35 goals and 71 points over the last three seasons. So why would the Blues move him? That’s a big commitment remaining. Plus the calculus that rival teams have made is that GM Doug Armstrong will see rookie Jimmy Snuggerud as a player who can effectively soon replace Kyrou. The Blues are a middling team that aren’t young, and this may be one way to continue to turn over the roster."

Thank you. I had no idea that was a Tom Waits song. It’s blowing my mind at the moment.
You're welcome, I actually had an argument with a girl at a bar one night because she put Bruce's version in the jukebox and I told her that was really a Tom Waits song, she got red in the face and almost slapped me, calling me a liar etc etc etc, my advice to all is, let an Irish girl enjoy her Guiness and just sing along !!!!!!!!!!

Kypreos mentioned on Sportsnet article that FLA could move Evan Rodriguez to make room for UFAs. I'd like him on Nico's wing if possible. 2 years at 3 million.
32 years old in a couple weeks. Shot and point rate have dropped significantly the last couple years. Doesn't play defensive minutes.

Not a guy I would be targeting.

Someone a few weeks ago proposed Dougie with some retention for Evan Rodriques one for one. That could work.and open more space while getting an asset.
