Devils discussion (news, notes and speculation) - draft and FA edition

After the Canucks AHL team won the Calder Cup with Silovs as starter, I feel like they’ll now give him the opportunity to backup for the NHL Canucks next year.

Lankinen is starting year one of what I think is a 5 year deal.

I have a feeling we may end up with Demko, with Vancouver retaining a decent amount.

Demko is a UFA after this year.

He’s a complete injury case, but could be a real steal and give us comparable goaltending to Allen this past year, without having to give Allen a however many year deal he’s probably going to get, since he’s the hottest goalie on the UFA market.

I think someone ends up with Demko, if it’s not us.

Lankinen getting 4.5x5 is so crazy lol. Even a half retained Demko is 2.5. We really don’t have 2.5 that we can spare on a goalie.

Avs fans talk about Colton the same way we do about Mercer in that he's not a center. That's why I think they've been so hell bent on finding centers the last couple of years. I think he played almost exclusively on the wing last year. Either way, I think we are looking at the same thing for the 3c position.

Yeah he strikes me more as a winger you put in the middle if you need to rather than a real center

If Palat is moved itll be before the draft, no? Whereas Dougie can be moved after his money is paid out at the start of the new salary year. Or is Palat in the same situation?

The problem with Demko is that oddly and horrifyingly vague knee injury. I don’t know how many games per year he’s good for at this point.

Yea I see zero reason to start Grits Top 6. Start 3rd line, get 2nd PP time and prove your worth
Theres every reason; hes a skilled forward prospect whos already 24. You try him with some skill early and see if he can hit stride right away. If he doesnt you drop him and go from there.

You dont start a guy on the third line who probably doesnt fit there well. And isnt Gritsyuk a LW? Id be more inclined to say Bratt would switch sides before making this guy while he acclimates to NA ice.

Gritsyuk should be with Nico or Jack to start. Thats how you put guys in positions to succeed, especially older prospects who have proven more overseas than most

And hes on a one-year ELC

Prove you can play higher...
He has 0 competition. Outside of Nico, Meier, Hughes, Bratt we have 0 top 6 talent. Who does Grits have to beat out for a top 6 role? Cotter, Noeson, Palat? I say you throw him with Hughes and see if he takes off running. Worst case scenario you drop him to the 3rd if he's not keeping up but as it stands right now him walking in he's the automatic best winger we have available to play top 6 minutes.

I sure hope Grits will be worthy enough to start on the top six, hopefully with Jack and Bratt. If I were a betting man, I’d put a little bit of money on it, but I have a nagging sense of doubt.

I definitely see a reason considering he’ll likely be one of the 4 best wingers

That's a pretty bold comment considering he has never played a game in the league. By no means is this kid a lock.

If he is even half as good as Meier who is pur 4th best forward ill be delighted.

Gritsyuk has proven exactly ZERO until otherwise shows it. Why throw him right at the wolves. 3rd line for now.

Well if we enter the season with our expectations of him being our 5th best forward to start the season then we did nothing during the offseason. Someone needs to be added to the top 6 beside him.

Also Im not saying not to give the kid a shot, I just said based off that lineup that was posted he needs to prove it. If hes up in the top 6 and proves it then great.

Also I know Mercer is a red headed step child around these parts and ill agree that Grits is more skilled right now, but Mercer is also STILL YOUNGER THEN Grits. Point is if he's on the roster until the the new to North America Rookie shows on the ice vs NHL players he better, Mercer is higher on my depth chart.

But as we know depth charts mean nothing because its about chemistry and will be mixed and matched until something works.

I hope to god Grits comes out of the gate swinging and proves he belongs with Jack or Nico.

Your automatically assuming he is better right out the gate then Mercer, Noesen, Cotter. Without a single game played.

Heck in the right deal I'd trade him. He is an unproven asset who showed upside in the K.

Its one thing to say he's more skilled but does that skill translate vs NHL talent. Some of those guys mentioned have proven it on some level. Mercer is still younger then Grits and has a 27 goal season under his belt. I get his last two seasons haven't been great but he still scored 20 and 19 goal seasons respectively.

If you ask me, if Gritsyuk IS in on our top 6 to start next season, and considered a solution, thats a problem.

Barring a ridicluous training camp., he will have to work his way up the lineup.

You guys want cheap younger players we drafted to graduate into key roles but you dont want to actually give them any roles

I dont feel this is at all what I am saying. I am saying that if he earns the role, great. I dont care if he starts there or not. But to me if we start the season and before he plays a single game he's our 5th best forward thats a problem.

While he has had success in the KHL he's not the level prospect that Jake or Nico are where there should be an automatic expectation he's our 5th best forward right off the bat.

I remember reading Gritsyuk is a right winger but shoots left? Maybe I'm confused. Can anyone confirm?

If Gritsyuk looks great in camp and wins a spot in the top 6 then great, but I don't get why some people on here act like you can't have offensively skilled players on a 3rd line.
