Devils discussion (news, notes and speculation) - draft and FA edition

I will simply never understand the benefit of getting angry at Fitz not doing what you want before he even has a chance to do it.
The Devils are in the minority of teams that have actually done a trade so far too.

So the Devils retooling has begun but it’s still to late and slow of a retooling because it hasn’t happened in 10 days before the draft and free agency.

And of the teams that have traded, I think the only one that's made more than one trade is Seattle.

Fitz should be fired if he traded for Hertl. I can honestly say, with every fiber of my being, Id rather have Palat. Now put that in your crack pipe..and smoke it.

Thats right, I would rather have Ondrej Palat then Thomas Hertl. 8 days a week.
At that price and that term for Hertl, it’s really no argument for me. That’s a massive “dodged a bullet” trade, especially since it’s the Canes. Hard to say that it’ll make them worse in the immediate term because Brind’amour has guys that he wants in his system and they tend to be a fit, but the decline will be brutal.

There’s also the hair-pulling frustration of the fact that guys go to Vegas and then only decline the instant they leave, so he might suck immediately, who knows. Good for us, bad for my specific brand of Haterade.

These toolboxes complain that Fitz has a history of bad contracts and then complains they wanted Hertl. I'm still waiting to hear of a GM who is available that can do better today.

Sometimes, I dont know what they are complaining about.

Can you get any sillier🤣

Its not even a thought in my mind. Its an absolute no Brainer. Palat at 6 mill for 2 more years or Hertl for 6.5 for another 5?

Would you like me to say it again to make sure you read it right?

I'd rather have Ondrej Palat then Tomas Hertl based on cap hit and salary.

It’s even worse, Hertl has a 8.14$ mil cap hit.

Edit: Didn’t remember the SJS retention.

The trouble with Fitz is he is scared to make a move he sits on his hands until all the real talent is gone then gets a couple of nobodies.....for the sake of the team fire that bum!

lol no it's not, where the hell are people getting this from? Fitz is proactive in the offseason in fixing whatever needs we have.

The problem is that he doesn't always pick the correct players for it. And you can make the point that when the season is actually in progress, that's when he's gunshy about making a deal. But "another summer where Fitz does nothing" is based on complete falsehood.

Fitz has been one of the to most aggressive GMs every summer. Do you ever get tired of being wrong??? Between trades and signings it's obvious.

You can question the moves he makes sure. But not whether he will be aggressive.

If anything the sits on his hands arguement is more applicable to the regular season.

Fitz is not perfect. I question several decisions. How long it took to fire Ruff. THe Coleman trade (that still made no sense to me at the time). Losing the Toffoli trade since he jetted. Im not afraid to criticize Fitz, but it has to be warranted. He also decided NOT to make some moves that were the correct decison like Hellybuyck, Geadreau etc. But facts are facts, the guy is the last one to be called hesitant or that he sits on his hands in the summer.

Only thing I'm going to disagree with is Gaudreau. Fitz offered him a massive contract similar to Calgary, he just ended up going to Columbus for less money. I don't think his heart was ever with us, the Flames, or one of the more established division rivals of his boyhood favorite Flyers.

Everything else is correct. We don't know if Hellebuyck was ever seriously offered by the Jets, but it wouldn't have hurt to ask.
