Devils discussion (news, notes and speculation) - draft and FA edition

would you like me to repeat myself?

You can't think Zegras sucks and then also at the same time think Anaheim got a poor return in a trade him.

If you think a player sucks, when a team nets a cheap bottom 6 fwd, a 2nd round pick, and a 4th round pick for that player, that's a pretty solid return. Especially a player that makes almost $6 million....

Anaheim did fine on that Zegras return. No team wanted Zegras - including Anaheim. That $5.75m qualifying offer to retain his rights in 1 year from now doesn't sound enticing to any team.

I continue to see folks comfortable with Gritsyuk in the top 6 to start the season. That is a recipe for disaster. I hope he re-breaks out here of course, but too many folks don't realize he hasn't improved much since his original breakout 3 years ago. Hopefully he just got complacent in the KHL, who knows. They need enough top 6 talent that he can start on the 3rd and hopefully work his way up. Before someone that's never watched him play or even follows the KHL and cherry picks some bs worthless statistic claiming he's gonna be a top 6 guy, don't bother. You have to actually watch his tape and how he was used. Reid Boucher dominates the KHL ffs. Anyway, hope I'm wrong, but if I had to answer is Grits more likely to be a good top 6 player on a competitive NHL team or an NHL flameout that'll be back in Russia in a few years....I'd take the latter at this point. Didn't feel that way back in 21-22ish though.

Hence why its insane we didn't trade for Marchment...

Any word on the contract and whether he'd be okay with starting in the AHL? Some of the Russians are only willing to come here if they get a guaranteed spot on the big club.

Your ignoring trends. Every offseaosn Fitz has been active. So why should I suddenly believe he wont be this summer? Unless you like to make things up as you go along. Why would I have a reason NOT to have faith?
He did nothing to bolster our forwards last offseason. Can't just rely on 4 guys.

He added 3 solid dmen and a top 5 goalie available. teams cant do it ALL in one offseason. Noesen at one point was the singing of the offseason. Cotter was a targetted move. Tatar sucked. A lot of guys underachieved. THis is not a disaster sitation at forward.

There will be probably be a hole somewhere else after this summer by adding a few forwards.

Adding 3 solid dmen, and drafting defenders over and over again. How did that go for us in the playoffs? Felt like a miracle scoring a goal.

This remains to be seen. Luke and Nemec could become cornerstone Dmen.

I agree we are not deep up front. He isnt perfect. One in which we underachieved. This is a huge offeason and if the way he overdid it for D last summer, we can expect the same at forward.

We knew Tatar was washed years ago, so signing him back this year shouldn't have inspired confidence to fans, let alone the front office.

If you listened to the end-of-season presser, he said that his priorities were goaltending and defense, and that didn't give him much to work with when it came to signing forward depth.

It's unquestionable that Fitz will do something to overhaul the bottom six. It's fair to ask whether they'll be the right acquisitions, but he's never been one to do nothing over an offseason.
