At 5-on-5, the Devils deploy 3C and 2C relatively interchangeably. You can call him whatever you want to make yourself feel better, but he doesn't have to play on a "checking" line. Deploy him in the OZ, give him PP2/PP1 minutes, play him next to Meier. He's 2 years removed from being a 65-point play-driving center. I don't care what his stats look like on the dumpster-fire-ducks the last couple of years. So true! Zegras’ game would translate into the perfect 3rd line center! Such a missed opportunity.
Peppers and eggs!No one is doubting Zegras' skill, but he's not the guy I would be targeting with our cap space for this season and hope that he's a bounce back candidate.
He might do very well in Philly, but I could see him getting into Tocchet's doghouse in a hurry. He's been straight up bad the past couple of seasons.
People want to cast Mercer aside, but he's been a far better player these past two seasons than Zegras has been.
Well like Triumph noted we are talking about a guy who is slated to be the 7th dman. He’s not going to be that good.I always liked Jon Merrill's game and felt he was a more underrated defenseman for us. But I don't think Jon Merrill would be an effective player for us all these years later.
Guess everyone is feeling the heat today, eh?
The upside on Zegras is definitely something we should have been looking at. It's low commitment and if you were concerned about the salary, I'm sure the Ducks could have retained a bit depending on the offer. No one is doubting Zegras' skill, but he's not the guy I would be targeting with our cap space for this season and hope that he's a bounce back candidate.

acting like zegras isn't an upgrade over Palat, Glass, or Mercer -- who all played significant minutes (and powerplay minutes!) for the Devils last year is... something.

Terrifying thought exercise: limit our favorite offseason targets to "only players fitz would like"I had no interest in Zegras at all. He’s pretty clearly not a guy Fitz would be targeting anyway. Horrendous defensively, zero physicality, stagnating offense.
You know in my 20 years of conversing with you on various different Devils forums I am starting to think that you use the word "fun" sarcastically.Ooh, a false choice, this is fun. Mercer played on PP1 a bit because of handedness. That's it.
The Devils don't have the ability to do this because they already give Jack Hughes this ice time. Which is why it's a terrible idea to even think about acquiring Trevor Zegras.

I'll go first. Fitz probably scratching his neck itching to trade a 3rd for this guy and offer him a two-year one-way deal.

Who hurt you?

We have zero scoring talent in the bottom 6. This could have helped.
My wishlist for the offseason is based in reality, so a guy the current GM would or wouldn’t be interested in should be something you factor in.Terrifying thought exercise: limit our favorite offseason targets to "only players fitz would like"

Zegras playing wing is apparently not a good fit for him.Peppers and eggs!
Zegras also didn't play with a Jack Hughes or a Nico Hischier.

I understand why you can't play Jack Hughes and Trevor Zegras on the same line. I plainly do not understand why they can't play on the same hockey team.
Hey, give me some credit, I do lots of work when I'm on the clock, and only occasionally slack off and post here.I do not know how you all do this literally every day
And all day, too.
The incompetence of turning a 4th round pick into more than a 1st round pick of value in half a season.they moved Kovacevic for a 1st+ or a C prospect
“Insulting” is wild.
Someone else saying “against literal children” is also wild. Gritsyuk is (barely) 24. There will be plenty of 22 year olds at camp.
You guys are doing a lot of work over a snide comment. Gritsyuk not attending development camp is not even remotely surprising given everything we’ve know and discussed about this prospect since before my 2nd grader was born.
Does a 2nd get it done? I don't know. What I do know is that we get zero offense from the bottom 6 and a 24 year old who put up 65 points in his last full season was available. HALF of that would put him #7 in forward scoring on this team last year. That “low” risk price doesn’t stay then same then.
I’m actually surprised but Zegras has awful PP production the last 2 years.Because if Zegras isn't playing on PP1 you're paying him too much money,
