Devils discussion (news, notes and speculation) - draft and FA edition

I honestly don't understand why people worry about NTCs so much tbh. How many times have you seen a player be approached by a team for a trade and say "nah, I know you don't want me anymore, I'm staying!"

Almost every time, when a player is approached, they realize the writing is on the wall. Why would they want to stay with a team that doesn't want them anymore?
Didn't Trouba force the Rangers to keep him for an extra season? I doubt for Palat it's so much about blocking a trade as opposed to a team actually wanting him in a trade.

Oh it happens. But not nearly as much as people like to make it seem. And I agree there are probably instances behind the scenes that we never hear about, but still.

a NTC, while not ideal, is not some grenade that can never be maneuvered around like some here might have you believe.

In terms of free agency, if both were willing to come to NJ, given the choice

2 years 8 mill AAV for Marchand
7 years 9 mill AAV for Ehlers

That would be a tough decision for me, but I'd be inclined to go with Marchand right on Jack's left side.

Pass on both, marginally less pass on Marchand probably because of term. Doesn’t address the teams core issues and ties up even more money in a top heavy distribution up front.

Though injuries were the leading cause behind the Devils’ demise, the team still had some weaknesses when 100 percent healthy. New Jersey over-relied on the power play for scoring and needed more even-strength production behind it. The winger depth could also use more support behind Jesper Bratt. With Peterka in the fold, someone such as Timo Meier could play the right side more often. That would shift Ondrej Palat (if he isn’t moved this summer) into a more fitting depth role.

Two players stand out as potential returns for the Sabres: Dawson Mercer, whose game has stagnated over the last couple of seasons, and Simon Nemec. Both have experience playing under Lindy Ruff, and that familiarity could help ease the transition.

I'd love a Peterka trade with Mercer+ as the basis

I don't think Marchand is leaving Florida, but I'd love to see him here. The POS factor is not to be trifled with.

Subban was good for the organization even if it didn't translate on the ice. I don't think he was as bad as many say but overall I really thought he was good for the club.
He brought some style to Newark as well, people thought Lundqvist was a good dresser till PK arrived!

There are material differences between Poulter and Daws, or at least the team believes that there are, because they gave NHL time to Daws and not to Poulter.

They should in no universe have Poulter or Malek be the 3rd goalie, goalies with no provenance and no NHL experience as the third guy is a bad idea. If they lose Daws to waivers and this is how things end up, so be it, that means they acquired a decent backup I would hope, but that is a lot better scenario than them deciding that they have to get a 6th round pick for Daws instead.
Where I agree is that there's no need for the team to act quickly. Better to let pre-season play out. Maybe Daws wins the back-up job.

If this ends up being about who the third goalie is, though, there is no reason to go 5 deep in goal - it's counterproductive for everyone in the minors. In the end I don't have a strong opinion on Daws vs Poulter (or Malek). But, one of them should go.

Personally, I'm not sure the team sees much of a difference between Daws and Poulter: they gave Daws four starts after giving him many more the two years prior, and they brought Poulter up for games where he sat as a back-up. Maybe early in the season Daws had the edge, but the fact they brought Poulter up for even a couple cameos shows the Devils were at least fine putting him in as a back-up if needed (which is the point of a third goalie).

Yeah saying “I’ll take Marchand for 2/14” is silly because Marchand wouldn’t even take that from Florida right now.

I bet he signs for 4-5 years. He’s played for a discount his whole career and this is his last contract. If he says “I won’t even look at a contract that isn’t 5 years long” he’ll still have 20 offers on the table.

Yeah I don't know why the 5 year professional hockey player who lives halfway across the world isn't coming to play in scrimmages with 20 year olds, guess he has no loyalty.

Right - you’re not really a ”prospect” when you are his age and have a one year ELC, no need to clown on 18-20 year olds. I doubt the Devils would even want him there. If this was Lenni that’s a different situation.

Train like a regular NHL’er would and show up ready to earn that spot there.

I swear to god you don’t get paid nearly enough money for the excellent work you do here as forum officer. Unionize bro! It’s worth it.

If you don’t want people to call snowflake soft posts snowflake soft - just don’t make em.

You solid like a spurned lover.

I've been critical of the organization PLENTY this summer so far. Not my fault you haven't seen it.

Being mad that a 24 year old that lives in Russia won't attend 2 days worth of scrimmages against children is weird.

boy everything i’ve read about this guy makes it clear he’s excited to be a part of this organization.
I know it’s a bit piling on, but this guy is a multiple year pro.

If he wanted to come to development camp, great, but it’s totally reasonable he wants to spend time doing his traditional offseason work and have a little more time at home before moving across the eWorld.

The guy is a pro, it would be insulting to think he should be at development camp.

I have never met someone who uses the word “snowflake” to form a cogent thought. I appreciate the confirmation bias.

I’m glad that nobody else has Gritsyuk fatigue. A chance to train and work out for the organization that drafted you before the coronavirus lockdown seems like something a player eager to earn a spot on the roster would be taking advantage of. But I guess that makes me a spurned lover. Or a snowflake? Lmk.

“Insulting” is wild.

Someone else saying “against literal children” is also wild. Gritsyuk is (barely) 24. There will be plenty of 22 year olds at camp.

You guys are doing a lot of work over a snide comment. Gritsyuk not attending development camp is not even remotely surprising given everything we’ve know and discussed about this prospect since before my 2nd grader was born.
