Devils discussion (news, notes and speculation) - draft and FA edition

My thing with Glass is that I don't know what he get's you over "random other guy at league minimum/callup from the minors". Is be better than Dowling? Sure. Is he $2M better than Dowling? I don't think so.

Can someone who is deep into numbers give me something that shows he's worth anything over random callup?

If he can be signed for 2M (not anymore), yes that's better than Dowling and it's not really even close. I hope the expectations aren't so low next season (due to injuries) that we have to settle with players like Dowling again.

My favorite stat is Games Played. Glass has never played a full season. He’s a $1.5M player and 4C. I don’t mind it , but would prefer a guy who’s physical, can win faceoffs, and cover 3C occasionally. He’s marginally better than Tomas Nosek.
One area Glass has a clear edge over Nosek is ability to “cover 3C occasionally”

im not sure what the numbers say in terms of defense but giving the discussion above im guessing Glass has the better numbers. Despite that i think Nosek has the edge in defense, faceoffs and physicality. Nosek is a more typical 4C in that way.

Still a huge consideration for us, given Jacks fragility, is a 4C who can play up if necessary. Thus Glass as 4C makes a lot of sense.

to carry it a little further, a legit 3C who can play defense and bring physicality would be ideal.

Although to the above, Mercer is an OK fill in 3C and Lenni Hamm’s could jump into Mercers wing position.

It is some of the additional value of Mercer.

GASP, but wait! I was assured he was a capable 3C and was worth qualifying for the Devs! Of course in reality, the most C needy team in the league isn't even gonna qualify him. I rest my case.
You're reading a board in an alternate reality universe...literally about zero people here said the Devils would or should qualify Glass at his absurdly high number.

Don’t sign Glass at his high QO but also don’t let him walk to free agency in spite of Fitz using this tactic before to keep player costs down? Some people just want to be unhappy.

The logic is especially funny.

YESTERDAY: LOL Fitz is STOOOPID he's going to sign Glass for $3M+, mark my words! I am smart and understand things!

TODAY: The Devils not even qualifying Glass means he sucks, it validates my opinion, even though I think the Devils can't evaluate talent, since they agree with me on this one thing that anyone who pays attention to this front office knew was going to happen, I'm right!

I didn't expect Glass to be qualified but I didn't think it was a no brainer or his number was astronomically high. I definitely also saw a lot of posters saying it was worth it, maybe due to risk aversion. Giving him 1 year 2.5m v. 1 year 2.0m may be 25% more, but it's practically only 500k more so I think it was a discussion internally.

I do think the UFA market for centers is going to be crazy this year. The Toews contract kind of a preview of how things will get. Devils are gonna try and make sure Glass doesn't hit UFA I think, cause signing any NHL caliber center to a 1 year deal is going to be tricky.

It's a no-brainer because he was arbitration-eligible, and so that means he can just file for arbitration and you might not know where his number will fall until late July. You might end up with the same AAV regardless, but this way the Devils will know where they stand with Glass by July 1, and either sign him or let him go.

I think they should sign him and I don't see why either side wouldn't be interested in that, but who knows.

Seems like thinking is he'd just sign his QO though, since it's so high?

Burakovsky:
30 years old
2 years remaining
5.5M cap hit

Palat:
34 years old
2 years remaining
6M cap hit

This might not be as difficult as people think. SEA moved the whole contract for free with no retention and got an asset back.

Veleno's not an asset - he's due $2.25M which is a lot for whatever it is he does. I could see Seattle buying him out because he's still eligible for the 1/3rd buyout, so that'd be ~$410k for the next two seasons.

I've been screaming about this for weeks that there are teams that need to hit the floor who will be doing things like this, because the only salaries that teams want to dump are the really bad ones, the floor teams are actually not in a buyer's market for once. That said, Palat is one of the worst contracts.

Maybe, but it's definitely a risk that you don't need to take.

I think Palat would be good for a team like Anaheim who is supplementing young talent, which they have, with veterans who have been around a while like Trouba, Kreider, and hopefully Palat soon. Even the Sharks who have a ton of young talent coming could use his presence.

Palat is 4 years older and declining. He has played with Jack Hughes a ton and Jesper Bratt yet still couldn't crack 30 points this season. As much as I like the guy, his contract is harder to move without retention then Burakovsky.

This is the type of trade I think it’s going to take the Devils to move Palat.

I would’ve happily taken Veleno, given him a year to see if things can come together, and if needed cut our losses next offseason.

I do wonder where Palat stands on his NMC. It feels like both of this deal or Kreider’s could’ve been possible, if Palat was willing to go to Chicago or Anaheim.

I think the most likely deal at this point is a straight Tarasenko for Palat deal, hoping Stevie Y really wants Palat for that locker room.

Never in a million years. I wouldnt trade Siegs for Nichushkin, Lehkonen etc
That’s fair, I know he’s solid defensively but as a person who doesn’t catch too many Devils games he’s a player that tends to be less noticeable (in a good way).

I know he’s more valuable than Colton, just wasn’t sure how much. Appreciate the insight and perspective.

He’s a guy who won’t put up any offensive numbers, but he’s the lynchpin of our D and intentionally took a team friendly deal.
