It’s going to take at least that level of value to dump his contract, unless the Devils are eating some of the contract.
mna, these are just bad zakes, all around. got to love it, when fans overreact and make every dmen worse then they are just to proof their point. we had one of of the best d corps in the league. 25 games into it the season dougie was stating in a postgame interview: dont worry, i am gonna get there, yet jos shot and acceleration never really improved. your looking backwards when it comes to our young d and dougie instead of anticipating. point remains, it should be done within a year anyway and if we miss the last possibility to do so, their will be no necessary upgrades upfront, no quinn and no cup. that risk outweighs everything imo. a better forword group will give our other d a better chance to move to puck and you just sign someone cheaper do replace dougie on you 3rd pair like other teams do. deangelo, grelcyk, schmift might all be available and cost you between 2 and 4m

A soon to be 33 year old with 5 years left on his deal?
A good faceoff guy, but wasn't used much defensively. About 30 sec's a game on the PK. 57% o-zone start. The O-zone starts can be partly attributed to baby sitting Michkov (68%) but just the same, he wasn't playing heavy minutes.
If it was 2 or 3 years left maybe, but I'm not doing 5. Not at near $8 mil.

My complete proposal was Dougie + Silayev.
They get a now player. They get an offensive D-man who can man pp1. They get a future potential defensive stud. Best of both worlds.
We get Quinn and we shed Dougie's contract.
Do they need to add to that? If they do great.
But that's a this offseason proposal (I wouldn't trade Silayev for one year of Quinn) and it sounds like they plan to keep him at least another year.

I think if we pay a 3rd team to retain some it should be doable. Say we retain 1 mil and trade him and a 2nd to Calgary who retains 2.5 mil. A team like the Panthers might be interested. It will improve their already amazing depth, and Palat can play in cruise control until the playoffs. Bet Calgary could get a 4th or 5th from Florida for a 2.5mil Palat. They also have 3 retention spots left and we seem to have a good relationship with them.
Then maybe we can trade for Marchment and still have money for a 3rd line center.

Crappy reporting. More like in 19 games he had 2G, 5A, 7pts, 19 shots. And a whopping total of 1 assist in his final 12 games. This is the production he put up while knowingly playing for a contract in a few months. Not great Bob.
But I look forward to this place justifying Fitz stupidly signing him for like $3m and term out of desperation and penciling him in as the 3C. Mentally preparing myself for it now.

The center market, on the other hand, looks quite bleak. Suter looks like the only 2/3 caliber center this team needs. He’s probably going to get overpaid because of that.
It’s either the top guys in for a big pay day like Tavares, Bennett, and Granlund or the lower end guys that are passable 3C but not much more like Dvorak, Eller, and Bjugstad. The rest of the guys are fourth line fodder like Kuraly, Kunin, Cousins, Faksa, Sturm, etc.
The Luukkonen signing makes a lot more sense looking at the free agent market. There’s only like 7-8 centers you could say are clearly better than him in this market.

In the 2010s decade, a lot of dead money contracts changed hands because teams didn't want them on their cap. We don't see that much anymore - Weber's been passed around, but he's gone from Arizona to Vegas to Chicago. Hossa went to Arizona also. There aren't that many of these deals in the league anymore, and teams are not paying a premium to ditch them anymore, either. We saw the Islanders pass Johnny Boychuk to the Sabres for nothing one year, teams aren't even doing that all that much. Floor teams have to hit that floor, and teams with a lot of ELCs are going to struggle with that because they can't attract stars, a lot of players have NTCs and don't want to go there, and so maybe a good way to for a floor team to ensure they are always above the floor even after the trade deadline is to act as a facilitator for a deal such as the Palat one I'm proposing. It's especially good if they can do so after July 1 if there are any bonuses so they get a discount on the money they actually eat.
A buyout for Palat this year is such a bad idea, it has to be an absolute last resort and Fitz has a great use for the money, because it only saves $2.5M this season.
It'd probably take an injury. Most teams are going to have their NHL duos in place early in the offseason. When we lost Wedgewood in 2021, Arizona had just lost Carter Hutton due to injury. When Anaheim claimed James Reimer this past season, it was right after John Gibson got hurt. And then they dumped Reimer when Gibson was good to go and Buffalo reclaimed Reimer.
Ballpark duos right now:
It can be a numbers game. Teams generally aren't going to claim a goalie and still be on the hook on paying their incumbent backup. I don't remember an offseason with so few NHL openings. We'll see if there are any buyouts (Grubauer) or trades (Demko/Gibson).

Does that pump his value back up a little?
Still only 31(turns 32 next month).
I'm guessing the Ducks like having him as a mentor/veteran back up to Dostal, so they probably aren't in a rush to move him.

The difference between a 1st round exit team and a SCF team is if Cody Glass and Palat are playing on line 3 or line 4. Need way more offensive depth in this league
Seems like Gibson has been angling for a move for a couple seasons. Problem has been that Verbeek (and his predecessor) have held a high price tag. Anaheim's owner isn't known to be a crazy spender, so they might not have been down to retain on Gibson for 3+ seasons. Now that it's down to two, maybe it's more palatable to them. Mix in a rising cap and Edmonton might be able to fit Gibson.
Anaheim tends not to be a cap team, so they could use Gibson's money towards somebody else. Rumor du jour is that they'll be targeting Aaron Ekblad if he makes it to July 1. The Markstrom template (two years partly retained for 1st+something) seems like something that could work. Although Edmonton doesn't have a first until 2027 and they don't have a great prospect pool.

Would be nice if his AHL numbers weren't dog poop. That team being garbage hurts the development and trade value of all our young guys.
But Palat Daws maybe the 4th we got for Haula? We could retain $2mil. We could bring back a not so great contract, my idea being a depth RHD to bridge the gap to Kova's return.

Gibson had a strong 29 games this year, but he had been putting up bad numbers for a half decade plus.
I get paying to retain, but I'd be very wary of giving up good assets for a guy with such a shaky 5 year track record.
I was going to propose Palat and Daws for Gibson, basically a deal that saves us $3.5 mil(replacing Palat and Allen with Gibson). But I think Anaheim would prefer the vet goalie as opposed to running 2 young goalies.
