LMAO at people patting Fitz on the back already for this move. Haula can play C or W, only had a 6 team clause, and 1 year left at $3.15. He was always gonna be easy to move in this cap environment. TBD on if this is a smart move for either team...depends on what Devs can do considering they were already blatantly desperate for another C or 2....now they definitely need 2 and have limited cap.
Idk. If I'm the Devs GM, I don't make this move unless I am 100% sure I'm getting a playable C on a non horrific contract. And idk how Fitz could be certain of that at this point (and no, Glass doesn't count).
I think you can spend $6mil and find a better player then Palat was this year.I think those of you that want to move Palat are not going to like how much it will cost to replace him this offseason. Middle six wingers are not going to make much less than him and you still have other holes to fill.
In a deal like this maybe it makes sense, but if we have to pay to move him or buy him out it's pointless. Next off-season is a different story.
Better than future considerations.positive value for Haula? hell yeah

Why do you make this trade now though? Why not after the draft (get a 26, who cares) and UFA starts so you have clarity into your options at Center? Now one of the most blatantly desperate for Center(s) teams is even more desperate. Think agents don't realize that? Think other GMs don't realize that? I don't get it. It's not like Fitz got an overpay. Just wait unless you already have another deal lined up.little nitpicking but i thought haula at 3m could bring you more then a 4th. i still think that virus during camp affected him long into the season and he got better after 4nations break and his injury.
we have love to see him in a trade for c upgrade like haula + dougie (3rd party retained) + picks for horvat or haula + for william karlsson. vegas probably doesnt do this, but you get the point.
Fitz wanted cap space and its better then playing haula on the 4th line. now with this move i am bit worried that he knows he cant unload palat and dougie, fingers crossed.
agree this probably means glass will be back. i am glad, if we give him a chance to prove himself. he could be more like 4th liner.

absolutely agree, wait if you can use him in a trade for an upgrade at Center or just deal him later. i doubt you do worse or even get negative return. looks a bit like panicking. Why do you make this trade now though? thats exactly why i said, this move now, has me worried Fitz knows he cant deal palat or dougie. otherwise you wait with this move. maybe i had to be done, to set something else in motion. oreilly to the rangers. i am kidding, canes are more likely lolThis logic works the same in reverse if the Devils are capped out and have to make a move before the beginning of the season, which chances are had they kept Haula and made their late June/early July moves, they would be. 'Now they know the Devils have to make a move, so they will have no leverage at all!'
I think you can spend $6mil and find a better player then Palat was this year.
Sure he scored some goals on Jack's line, but he had all of 28 points this year, and was a drag on Jack's possession numbers. And he was completely useless away from Jack. 1g 3a's in 350ish minutes.
My point is not that Palat is worth his contract or that I particularly want to keep him. Simply I don't think it's particularly likely that we can move his full cap hit without paying assets, and if you're not moving his full cap hit, you're almost certainly paying as much or more to replace him. If you're retaining salary on him it's even worse.I don't think either of these things are quite true. Palat is movable with retention, other players can be acquired with retention. I agree that the Devils shouldn't be in the market for a high-end winger or anything, but someone like Nino Niederreiter? Absolutely.
They should not buy Palat out, that is an absolute desperation move because it barely saves them anything this year and throws money 2 years beyond the end of his deal.
But yeah, I don't think it will cost that much to replace a lot of what Palat does, because he doesn't do all that much.
What kind of a job you have?
In my case a thankless one that makes me thr butt of jokes and snide comments.
What are the lottery numbers for tonight by the way?I have a feeling Haula is gonna get unloaded to a team like Nashville or San Jose before the draft. I think Tom has a good relationship with both teams, I think Nashville could actually use him well.
Let's say we retain $2 mil, and get a late round pick. That $4mil can go towards adding a legit top6 winger that then pushes Grits or Mercer(or maybe Meier if we really want to roll 3 lines) down to the 3rd line improving the top 6 and the 3rd line.My point is not that Palat is worth his contract or that I particularly want to keep him. I just think it's more likely that Palat performs somewhere closer to his career average at least one more year than he plays how he did last year. If that ends up being the case, I don't think you're replacing that for less than $6m in this years UFA market. I'm very pro paying other teams to retain on a player we are buying but I don't see that being a viable route to replacing Palat.
Also I think it's fair to say the market got Neiderreiter wrong for some reason and that shouldn't be a reasonable expectation of contract value for this off-season
both palat and dougie can make it tough to move them with their 10team tradelists. you just can hope, they would be okay to see something else and play in sunny cali. before they ride into the sunset. like last exit san jose.Haula fell off a cliff play wise. That money from his contract is no longer on the books and we have some room to work with.
Actually shocked we didn't have to add to move him.
Just find a way to off load Palat next and that's a good start to the off season, Tom just can't f*** it up beyond belief by still going with slow big grinding skilless plugs with the room made after this trade and hopefully the palat trade.
BarelyHaula was dog shit at center last year. They stopped playing him there even with Jack out.
Glass was a better center then him.
