Devils discussion (news, notes and speculation) - draft and FA edition

My GOD the bar is low for these guys. I don't know why we are patting them on the back for literally doing the minimum that any professional sports team should do -- which is to try in the f'in playoffs.
Yea.....at least it's better than the alternative I guess. Concern I have is what if the Canes slept walk that series since the Devs were never really seriously competitive from the jump? Opening series vs a dead team walking. Maybe the Canes coasted, which would negate even that very small "effort" victory. Plus they needed Andersen hurt to win the 1 game they did.

Why, you gonna call them and try to get me fired?

I am perfectly capable of doing that myself!!
No, I bought tickets to NA. And hammer. I trying to understand what kind of a part of your body I should smash and what I should not touch to give you an opportunity to compete against your competitors in more difficult conditions for you.

I'd probably hit my head and right hand if you want to truly take me out. Get the proper angle and you should hit both in one swing!

Andersen got hurt in Game 4, not Game 3.

While I agree some here do go too far bending over backwards to give them credit, conversely others are a bit unfair in over the top criticism a la some of the 'well they didn't CARE ENOUGH' posts last night comparing our injuries to the Panther injuries. As if anyone ever said injuries were the only reason we weren't nearly good enough for a deep playoff run, they were just the main reason we couldn't even compete with mediocre Metro teams.

the draft isn't for another 9 days

and free agency isn't until July 1st

Endless moaning

Trotz seems massively delusional. Preds are going to be awful for a while yet until he gets fired. There was a good video about how being good as a coach doesn't necessarily translate into being good in the front office and Trotz manifests that perfectly.

Nashville didn't need to trade O'Reilly, so they could attach a massive asking price. But yeah, I agree that a good coach might not make for a good GM.

I always wondered if Pat Quinn the GM sabotaged Pat Quinn the coach in Toronto. Early into the 1999-00 season, he made a series of moves:

- Fredrik Modin for Cory Cross
- Sylvain Cote for a draft pick
- draft pick for Dmitri Khristich, waived Steve Sullivan to make roster space

Khristich immediately fell off a cliff. Modin/Sullivan took off for their new teams. Cote was nearing the end but Cross was a limited third pairing D. After injuries to Bryan Berard and Alexander Karpovtsev, this was Toronto's blue line in that infamous six shot elimination game against us:

Kaberle (22:35) - Yushkevich (25:48)
Markov (21:31) - Andrusak (17:12)
Cross (17:19) - Diduck (14:00)

Andrusak was a career minor leaguer who never played in the NHL again after that game. Diduck was signed off the scrap heap midseason.

I didn't really have any expectations to win once Jack got hurt. I just think the bending over backwards to give them credit for "giving effort" is a ridiculous thing to do at this point. This is sort of the thing we talk about at the end of each season. "Yeah. it didnt end well, but X, Y, Z got hurt and they gave it their all!" And quite frankly, it's even hit or miss whether they do that. They very frequently fold at the first sign of trouble.

Last year should be incredibly concerning for everyone, not because our players aren't good enough, but because it's yet another year of our most important players showing an incapability of staying healthy throughout the entire season and not being available when we need them most. Whether it's their fault, bad luck, etc. I don't even care, quite frankly. It's just starting to feel like Embiid with the Sixers.

EDIT: Not that we need to relitigate the entire injury issue. Just tying it back to my initial comment.

The health concerns for the Hughes brothers are completely valid. But as a fan, there's just not much you can do about that at the end of the day. So for me, I guess I don't get too wrapped up in it because that isn't in anyone's control as much as how we play in absence of them.

I thought our overall level of play, despite our shortcomings in depth, was competitive enough against a good Carolina team. I can't say it was enough to win the series because our special teams was a dumpster fire, but I'm willing to forgive that under a small sample size where the defensive PK units were likely thrown in a blender with the losses that occurred throughout the series.

Injuries are random. I remember when Crosby got a concussion every other game and people thought his career was over 10 years ago.

man, some of you guys find new ways to be mad online every single day

what an absolutely weird thing to say or worry about.

Regardless, even if you loved the effort vs the Canes, keep in mind that same Canes team got utterly dominated by the Panthers. And even that aside, it was a Canes team that was much worse than the 2022 version and had effectively sold a top line player for futures this season.

Injuries are random, but players are definitely prone to getting injuries for some reason or another.

In retrospect, it's actually insane how lucky he's been. Getting multiple, still playing another decade, and not getting another one is crazy.

Yep and concussions are WAY worse than shoulders.

Maybe Jack never gets hurt again, maybe he does. Like a lot of people in here, I will assume he's injury prone until he outgrows that stigma, but I'm a long way from moving on from him because of it. He's the best forward in the history of the franchise (I've seen them all) I'm willing to wait it out much longer.

Fix the bottom 6

I understand it, I’m not losing my mind over it or nothing. Can it still be disappointing? I think it’s fine to acknowledge that.

I think once Lindy was still the coach in 23-24 and they made the wrong moves that offseason, I was kinda resigned to the fact the step back would happen. They also got tremendous injury luck that year for the first time in their cores history too, a lot went right for 22-23 NJD and it’s ok to acknowledge it.

Some of their issues are still placating them a bit, we’ll see how they get over them. One thing I will not stand for is the core bashing that this sub loves doing.

I agree with all you’ve said. I also believe in the core!
