Devils discussion (news, notes and speculation) - 2026-27 offseason part III

Yep! This is exactly what I'm hearing in here...

"It's too tough"
"It'll take time"
"We have no cap space"
"Need to build through the draft"

OK. I'll sit and wait. 2012 was only 14 years ago. We should be better in 2032? Is that when I can check back in? Just live with shit for another few years until we find out if Sunny was the right guy. We're Vancouver or Calgary.

The Flyers, Islanders and Blue Jackets blew past us. We can't catch shitty teams like Washington and Pittsburgh.

Vegas and Florida don't care about the draft and farm system. They take your scouting department and your draft picks and steal them on their way to Cups after you developed them. Hey Jack/Mitch/etc? Buffalo/Toronto/etc. did a great job of drafting and developing you. Wanna win? We're assembling a team of guys who's organizations had lots of good draft picks and didn't hit on all of them (because that's impossible) to make our own team of NHL Avengers.

You know why Florida doesn't give a crap about the draft picks they gave Ottawa? Because if any of them turn out to be difference makers, they'll just get them anyway. Let the Sens put the organizational resources into making them great players and when they get frustrated bacause all you do is draft and develop they'll want out and come here.

I've had enough
Most people are saying flexibility this off-season will be challenging, not that improvements won't be made. People are simply acknowledging that the situation that Fitz left Sunny is pretty tough, especially this off-season. It should open up with the cap going up and money coming off the books next off-season. There's a wide gap between next off-season and 2032.

I have a hard time blaming you though, I'm getting pretty tired of waiting and bummed out by the results as well. 1 playoff round win in about the last 15 years, 3 appearances. That does indeed speak for itself, though there's a rebuild in there and Lou not wanting to rebuild.

Do damage how? With what roster? This same shit roster that's struggled to score goals 5 on 5 for two years straight?

We aren't in the west where it's weak outside of 3 teams.
I think Fitz backed them into a corner. They need a season to get rid of contracts and give Mehta a chance to assess things on the inside. They have enough time with Jack and Luke that this season isn’t cup or total failure. Just improve a decent amount and guys have to decide if they are going to be part of the solution or part of thr problem. I’d expect next season there are bigger changes .

OK. We shall enjoy another season of missing the playoffs.(...which I wouldn't be too upset about if you told me we're rebuilding.)
Possibly. Right now I'm hoping the one "big" move I expect (in whatever form it takes) pays dividends and everyone stays healthy.

Maybe they do more than I think they will, who knows. I'm just not expecting it at the current point in time. But it's not like I have insider access or anything

This is what people can't grasp. There are too many teams in our own division that have either improved or are just better than us. This doesn't include Montreal and Buffalo let alone Florida. The garbage, trash-ass Leafs are even doing something, and who knows if they're done.

If you believe you are better than them, act like it. Excuses are excuses. Find a way, even if it angers people. If you think we can't compete in the short term, then start over for another post 2012 rebuild. Figure it out.

I'm just frustrated and sick of losing.

Sunny was in Florida. Florida flipped the narrative with one trade. One trade set the dominos tumbling and now they are unstoppable. Like Vegas, they missed the playoffs one year and instead of going back into the draft and making value plays and worrying about the cap they doubled down. Just like Vegas did the summer they missed the playoffs.

Sunny came from that culture. I want him to bring it here.

I’d be ok with that but the team doesn’t want to go down that path.

Unfortunately, Florida basically got handed Tkachuk, he specifically wanted to go there. If there’s a franchise altering player that just wants to come play for us, I’d be very willing, I just don’t think that’s the case.

I’m very hopeful Sunny will make positive changes.

Makes me sad.

Didn't the Athletic give the Devils the #1 farm system a few years ago? Can we hang a banner for that?
I’m not convinced ownership cares about winning except insofar as it helps marketing. As long as they have a Hughes on the team I’m skeptical they lean into a rebuild. Hopefully they can turn it around. Buffslo’s big move was canning the GM . Same for Montreal . Msybe NJ will get lucky with that.

There was. Maybe still is. GO GET HIM!!!

Florida did NOT flip the narrative in one trade. They made a series of incredible moves, with players that their teams didn’t want them and used it to build a superstar team.

Bennett trade on a buy low
Reinhart trade on a buy low
Signed Verhaeghe as a UFA when he was unqualified
Signed Bobrovsky as a UFA
Acquired Forsling via Waivers
Signed Evan Rodrigues as a UFA
Signed and Developed Countless Depth Pieces

It was 3 years of good calculated moves which culminated in them trading for Tkachuk.

I’m definitely holding out a little faith that we can see a move of some significance. Just can’t see Sunny totally punting this season. We do have a few ways of clearing up money, and that’s ignoring the rising cap as well. Here’s to hoping for it.

You expect they move Nemec and maybe in conjunction with another player or a pick. Whether that’s a significant move remains to be seen.

I'd have really wonder about the possibility of replicating things that happened in Florida.

For one, they may have some advantages as a location that New Jersey doesn't, which may give them more opportunity. Can't say that for sure, but it's possible and I want to acknowledge it .

Also, they seem to just be better at developing guys. Whatever reason it is...they get people, they get better. Could be the player environment, the coaches...I dunno...but a frequent refrain in looking at their acquisitions is that these people weren't in "great" standing when Florida got them. The devils trade for people and in a couple of big cases, that certainly hasn't been the case.

But that said....just thinking back to some of their moves......I mean, the level at which they knocked those out of the park is going to be really difficult to do again.

Forsling was a waiver claim....one of the greatest in history. Mason Marchment was basically an AHL trade who started putting up 40+ points. . They signed Verhaege as a 25 year old with 13 career points for just above the league minimum and he turned into a 40 goal scorer. That would be like the Devils signing Cole Schwindt this off season and him turning into a 40 goal scorer. Nobody would even think about that if the devils signed Schwindt in two weeks. We'd all just be like "whatever". but Florida a lot of moves like this that helped build the team they are.

They traded a second and prospect for Sam Bennett who was largely a flop in Calgary. His point production was lagging behind what we've gotten from Mercer at the same age. They picked up Montour on the scap heap. Same for OEL and rehabbed him. Mikkola was an add in on the Tank trade who had mostly been a third pairing guy and now plays a lot of minutes (and super important minutes in the playoffs) for Florida. Eetu was a 22 year old former second round pick who had yet to become an NHL regular. I think he was like the third piece of that trade (behind Haula and Wallmark) and turned into a very useful middle sixer.

Reinhart was a good player who became a great one on the better team.

Florida bought quite a few penny stocks that ended up blowing up, which I really think is just a difficult path to follow, but keep that in mind when the Devils make super small moves that we don't really give a second thought to. Or try to buy low on failed vets that we wouldn't want anything to do with as fans.

am I the only weird one who is significantly more optimistic about the team than these insane doomers on the board but significantly less excited to just rely on PDO to smile on us next year?

Nah, I think the team will be better than last year, I think they’ll play to their strengths as they did post-Olympics. I’m pretty optimistic about next season. I also expect a few positive changes from Sunny that will help the team. What you’re saying makes sense.

So do consider Kyrou a candidate for buy low?

Imo it should be. Nemec is iffy with the contract situation but definitely holds solid value given his pedigree. As you said we’ll find out in due time.

Positive thing is we have Sunny now, who undoubtedly had a say and input in some of those moves. He appears to know what he’s doing.

I’m guessing we’ll trade Nemec bring in a cheap puck moving type depth defensemen and have at least a few new forwards, one they hope can contribute in the top 6 and 2-3 depth forward changes. I could see guys Like Cotter, Noesan, and Tyslapov not being brought back.

I also think Sunny will get Markstrom out if he can and feels he can be replaced but that may not end up happening this offseason.

Also the way FLA build and work around the cap. We took their 2 guys who worked on it

We won’t be paying 4th liners etc. It’s a super exciting time to have people who know how to build a winner
