Honestly overall stats wise we seem just fine at 5v5 with the only really downer stat is our shooting percentage isn't the best.

That's most likely not going to stick so I think we are going to be just fine assuming we keep up our general quality of play.
Our overall team shooting percentage is about 0,3% above league average, but that's nothing too wild, as there's teams like Tampa with a shooting percentage that I think was something like 3%-4% above the league average, and we've all talked about Washington and theirs is also 2%-3% above the league average.

And the really good offensive teams normally shoot better than the league average. And some of the shit teams shoot below league average because they aren't very skilled.

I know I'm gonna sound like I'm on some conspiracy bullshit, but it's time we talk about this.

In the last 2 seasons particularly I've been noticing shot counts fluctuating, constantly being shaved. At one point we were outshooting them 9-7 last night after the 1st period, but they shaved 2 of our shots off and it was 7-7.

Stuff like this happens almost every game I'm noticing. The shot count will randomly go down one or two and then it will go up again. It never used to do this before 2-3 years ago.

I'm not suggesting it's some kind of point shaving scandal, but I really wanna know if there's a possibility the shot counts are being manipulated or if the counters are just going back and reviewing every shot they count after the fact, and then deciding that it wasn't really a shot on goal on second look, because it didn't actually make it to the goalie, even though it looked like it did on the first glance. Maybe shot counting is done through AI now, I don't know lol. With all the betting sites I'm really thinking they might play a part in this somehow.

And I'm still weirded out by the NHL randomly deciding as of this season that they're not going to ding a goalie with a goal against if it's put in by his own teammate. There was never any announcement on this. The NHL says Jake Allen has a .900% this year, but every other site tracks it as an .896%, but the league is not acknowleding the two goals scored on him on own goals this year. This has happened with several other goalies this year, including Mackenzie Blackwood.

I believe the shot counters do go back and review the shots on goal.

So it’s updated real time and then they’re going back and reviewing when they have a chance. This can lead to weird additions or subtractions when nothing is going on.

I definitely believe that, but it's not something that took place more than 2-3 years ago. Once in a while you would notice a shot or two being taken away or being added, but I notice it almost every game now. Particularly during intermissions and shortly after games have ended.

I wonder if it’s as simple as better software, better recording, and some AI built in.

I could think those would allow quicker and better reviewing of when shots may have been missed and when they may have been overcounted.

That could mean that the scorers are alerted or shown likely errors more often now.

idk if they still do this, but when i tracked stats for BU during college, we were relying solely on a "shot caller" (they would say something like "shot 23 home" or "shot 17 wide"), someone else would manually input that into our metric tracker. if that's how they're still doing it 12 years later, then it's going to be subject to a lot of fluctuations

The only thing that bugs me a bit is that they're 2nd worst in Goals for above expected 5v5. We have 68 goals on 80.6 expected goals for at 5v5. I expect that to balance out as the season goes along, so it's not that big of a deal.

Probably more pressure from the league on being accurate now that you can bet on things related to shot counts, too. I imagine the betting companies want it as accurate as possible.

It's definitely that. We went from 10 shots to like 8 by the start of the 2nd period.

They are adjusting quickly for the shot props

Im pretty sure betters raised a bit of a stink last season because of shot props being changed in the post game

That first goal on Allen was embarrassing lol, what the f*** was he doing, just stay in the net in your crouch. Looked like a bloated whale rolling around on the beach.
