Someone a few posts up pointed out that Moose plays a better style for this era of the NHL, and I think that's spot-on. Marty plays by seeing a shot and reacting to it with a limb. Moose plays by being in position to take up as much space as possible in the direction of the shot, and he has a great sense about exactly how far he needs to be square and centered to the shooting angle. It's seriously amazing how quick he is in the butterfly without flinging himself out of the crease every time.
 
Definitely, they play different styles.

Marty is more of a hybrid. Some read and react, some butterfly, but nothing 100% either way.

Hedberg is a much more butterfly goalie, taking away huge zones of the bottom of the net. Both can be effective though, that's for sure.
 
Marty is not going to benefit from sitting more often

He's always needed to be playing more and once he finds that groove, he takes it and runs with it and he's said it himself that if he isn't playing as consistently, it will be harder for him to find his groove (see last season)

Moose will be getting plenty of games this year with the tightened schedule and many back to backs
 
I forgot it's a Rangers game. Marty will play and I agree. If it was any other team, I think it would be a nice thank you to Moose to give him the start,

It's highly likely that Moose is guaranteed at least 10 games by playing in one game of each of our 10 back-to-back sets. Throw in a couple more games and that's the 3:1 ratio of games right there.

Exactly. By the way this season is set up, Moose will be getting his fair amount of work.

No need to try and ride the hot hand, we have a very capable tandem. Some teams could only be so lucky.
 
By save percentage we have one NHL average goaltender, and one guy is is below average. I do not think that is a particularly impressive tandem given the way we split games between the two.

This is not 05-06 anymore, where anybody above .900 is great. Save percentages are up significantly in the past few years and are higher the last couple years than they were even during the DPE. The bar is higher than it used to be.

If you put Tallinder, Larrson, Fayne or Greene on the PP point, you're going to allow shorthanded breakaways just every game. The defensive corps is already struggling to hold the blue line at even strength, holding the blue line on PP is just 10 times more difficult. And iirc the last time Kovalchuk was injured, for 5 games last year, the PP was a complete mess: 2 SHers for 1 PP goal scored.

Don't get fooled, Kovalchuk is a world class blueliner compared to the Devils defence-men.
 
Let's not forget Marty went 2-0-0 in his first two starts this year. Posting a 970-980 save percentage, and 0.50 GAA with 1 goal against in one game, and a shutout in the second. It seems many have forgotten about this.

We still have one of the better tandems in the league. Laugh at me all you want, but do the Flyers have the luxury to roll two goalies? AHL Leighton? LOL! Nabokov's backup on the island is a garbage can. Pittsburgh has it, but not without a bunch of controversy. The Rangers can roll with two, but Moose is way better than Biron. Even if you're just a stats jockey you'll see that. They'll still need Lundqvist more times than not.

The PP would be a mess without him, no kidding. He's our best offensive player. I'm saying put him at LW on the PP. Him as a D-man hasn't worked well since he got here. Most of his PP goals come when he rotates to the dot anyway.

You are correct, the LW on PP is where he belongs, period. But who are you going to play on the point until Larsson feels comfortable enough and Gelinas gets called up ?
Just to think about either Tallinder or Greene holding the blueline on PP give me the shivers.

Once again I agree with you in theory but I feel like Kovalchuk is Peter Deboer "less bad" option.
 
I'd rather see Greene and company fumble passes at the blue line that Kovy getting burned for breakaways constantly.

Greene was a 38 point player last time he played on the PP regularly.

I have to agree to disagree, Kovalchuk doesn't get burned constantly for breakaways.
 
I don't care who they are. If he's out there, he can't give those up.

I'm thankful for Steve/Chico after hearing some of the announcers around the league. Especially the idiots across the hudson
 
Devils made half the league look silly last season by picking up errant passes at the point.

It happens.
I agree, though, I'd like Kovalchuk to not be on the point one day - but we don't have that luxury right now.

Did you hear some of Steve's calls on Moose's big saves?

I mean they obviously weren't of Doc's level(then again....no one is) but they were pretty damn good. :nod:

Steve is getting better, I think he's going to be a pretty damn good play by play man someday. Hopefully he doesn't get good enough for NBC to want him though, they ruined Doc :(
 
If NBC takes Steve it means we've fallen on some terrible times. He's not bad, but he's not good.

He doesn't understand hockey at all. He constantly has to guess why play was stopped. Yesterday the puck hit a player on the bench, and he guessed hand pass. Streit deflected a puck out of play and he claimed Nabakov had it.
