#10 Aaron Broten/86-87 - #86 Jack Hughes/22-23 - #14 Brian Gionta/05-06

#9 Zach Parise/08-09 - #23 Scott Gomez/03-04 - #21 Kyle Palmieri/15-16

7FD6082A-F0D9-45B2-87F0-9D8D4114FC45.gif

Uh… maybe a little.

#44 Miles Wood/17-18 - 19 Bobby Carpenter/93-94 - #12 Bill Guerin/96-97

#24 Doug Brown/91-92 - #20 Blake Coleman/19-20 - #15 Jaime Langenbrunner/9-10

Losing Rolston (#14), Millen (#10), Neal Broten (#9) and Mark Johnson (#12) to duplicate sweater numbers was a bummer because centers became a problem.

Also Coleman & Pando can never be united. *sob*

In fact everyone has the same number, this team apparently shuns Americans and almost everyone a RW. This was hard to finish, not gonna lie. Some rough choices had to be made.

#6 Andy Greene/13-14 - #28 Brian Rafalski/06-07
#5 Tom Kurvers/88-89 - #7 Paul Martin/07-08
#8 Will Butcher/18-19 - #29 Mark Fayne/12-13

Martin’s best season is likely 08-09 but I have to keep that with Parise but his 2nd best is close enough.

I discovered last time Housley and Greene both wore #6. Now, it’s Kurvers and Weinrich wearing #5, grr. And both Chambers and Fayne wore #29? Why god why? After all the searching, I end up with Will Butcher again.

#35 Cory Schneider/14-15
#34 John Vanbiesbrouck/00-01

Would have liked to used Clemmensen but alas, he also wore #35. I somewhat cheat here with Vanbiesbrouck, he played 4 games, but I needed Terreri’s good seasons for forwards (who drove me nuts).

These additional restrictions by nationality are gonna make all this real hard, heh. I imagine we could do a Canadian roster easily enough (I should add nationality to my excel sheet I suppose).

And to help people a little more, or if you just want to see what the results have been in the past, here are the last five years worth of teams:

2022 Devils All-Time Team
2021 Devils All-Time Team
2019 Devils All-Time Team
2018 Devils All-Time Team

Edit: also, Kasatonov wore 7, not 8. Not sure how I was making that mistake for so many years...
it’s fascinating to go back and look at the old threads! Things change quick around here. I’m not sure i have the concentration to put a whole team together but maybe i’ll give it a shot over the next couple weeksz

It's a shame we had the board reset, because I'm pretty sure the first year I did this was 2005. The teams would have changed so much since then.

Edit: actually, it was probably 2007 or 2008. I think it was the first year we had enough seasons for a 23 player roster, which would have been after the 2007-2008 season, maybe 2008-2009 depending on whether I was counting 1994-1995 as a full year.

The other number related thread inspired me to finish the third line-up I had started a while back.

First I did All-Time Devils: All Under 6’ Edition
Then, All-Time Devils: All American Edition
Now introducing,

ALL-TIME DEVILS: EASTERN EUROPEANS ONLY EDITION

#26 Patrik Elias/03-04 - #16 Bobby Holik/97-98 - #89 Alex Mogilny/00-01

#17 Ilya Kovalchuk/11-12 - #20 Alexander Semak/92-93 - #29 Jan Ludvig/83-84

#97 Nikata Gusev/19-20 - #22 Viktor Kozlov/05-06 - #68 Jaromir Jagr/13-14

#25 Valeri Zelepukin/91-92 - #18 Sergei Brylin/01-02 - #8 Danius Zubrus/10-11

The biggest loss is Sykora (#17) *sob*

Another bummer is I couldn’t sneak Peter Stastny on here. (He wore #29 one year but I couldn’t make it work.)

Sadly Zelepukin’s best two seasons weren’t available, that’s a blemish on the otherwise completely delightful 4th line.

I did enjoy how these forward lines came together, maybe the defense will go like that.

DCBB96B0-D3D9-4235-9C37-DB12A01539DD.gif

Fetisov, Zidlicky, Vishnevski and Smehlik all wear #2.
Kasatonov, Malakov and Zyuzin all wear #7.
Rachunek, Volchenkov and Škoula all wear #28.
Modry isn’t available (need his one good year for Sidorkiewicz).

Now you might think some of those are weaker choices, but think again, because I ended up being left with roughly six Eastern European defenders to work with. (And one RHD.)

I guess the positive is no difficult choices have to be made. Or any choices.

#2 Viacheslav Fetisov/89-90 - #28 Karel Rachunek/07-08
#7 Alexei Kasatonov/90-91 - #10 Oleg Tverdovsky/02-03
#74 Egor Yakovlev/18-19 - #70 Dmitry Kulikov/20-21

#41 Vitek Vanecek/22-23
#1 Peter Sidorkiewicz/93-94

(No choice there either but I got a whole squad.)

AC: Pat Burns

So, I only made a slight tweak to my team which was adding in Jack between Taylor Hall and Jaromir Jagr (what fun that could have been!)

In doing so, I dropped Bobby Holik down between Bratt and Gionta (what a size difference  ) and moved Trav down to a spare forward. I had to drop Palms out completely, but hard to complain about this center depth. I would imagine Nico will make a case in the years to come to get in here as well but it'll be tricky to find out where. It might cause me to drop Aaron Broten out all together and bring Jason Arnott down to a spare forward too. Break up the A-Line!? The audacity!

I like your team, my only change would be to include somewhere Gomez 05-06 perhaps at the Holik spot

Imagine doing this back when we had only 23-25 seasons to work with. Every season had to be used, no matter how terrible.

Maybe I should one using only the last 23 seasons... would be an interesting constraint.

With that, I’d then have to remove Gionta for the 05-06 season and Driver as my spare defender for #23.

Full disclosure, I strongly considered using Dougie’s season this year but Jack was too good to pass up. I’d love Jack to surpass 100 points so I can then use that season for him and then slot Dougie into a spot for this season.

I went with Dougie because with him the defense is insanely good. Also, because I don’t expect Dougie to ever have a season quite that good again, while Hughes I fully expect to get better and better.

It’s exactly why I think I’ll add him in time and Jack will ultimately have a different season that will eclipse this one. But for now, it was hard to ignore this season from Jack for me personally. Either call is a good one, though!

It's really nice to have a season where you have two (actually three, because Hischier's season is one of the best by a center in Devils' history too) players who all are basically shoo-ins to be on any team in the foreseeable future! Especially after the last ten years, where honestly.... uhhh we could outright skip over them and not miss too much.

I've only followed the team since 08-09 so I thought doing a team build with one player from each season since (15 in total) but since that does not equal full line up I gave myself the 5 retired numbers to make a full lineup. This team certainly is something. I tried to squeeze in some of my favorites like Zubrus and Carter, but was unsuccessful. Shoutout to Clarkson 30 goal season making an appearance. I used to love Clarkson.

#26 Elias (00-01) - #86 Hughes (22-23) - #17 Kovalchuk (10-11)
#9 Hall (17-18) - #13 Hischier (21-22) - #68 Jagr (13-14)
#63 Bratt (20-21) - #19 Zajac (08-09) - #21 Palmieri (16-17)
#20 Coleman (19-20) - #14 Henrique (15-16) - #23 Clarkson (11-12)

#4 Stevens (93-94) - #27 Niedermayer (03-04)
#3 Daneyko (89-90) - #28 Sevo (18-19)
#6 Greene (09-10) - #2 Zidlicky (12-13)

#30 Brodeur (06-07)
#35 Schneider (14-15)

Ok, let's GO (finally). I'm probably going to try and do two, eventually, but I'll start with the one where I try and get as many signature seasons as possible. The years that, when I think of a player, spring to mind, and if I'm picking between guys (like Parise or Hall), trying to pick the seasons that define my fandom.

#9 Zach Parise (2008-2009) - #19 Travis Zajac (2009-2010) - #14 Brian Gionta (2005-2006)
#26 Patrik Elias (2000-2001) - #25 Jason Arnott (1998-1999) - #21 Kyle Palmieri (2015-2016)
#17 Ilya Kovalchuk (2011-2012) - #16 Bobby Holik (1997-1998) - #15 John Maclean (1988-1989)
#10 Aaron Broten (1987-1988) - #86 Jack Hughes (2021-2022) - #22 Claude Lemieux (1991-1992)
#13 Nico Hischier (2017-2018) - #12 Jeff Friesen (2002-2003)

THE Parise season. THE Zajac season. THE Elias season. THE Gionta season. THE Kovalchuk season. Beyond that, we got some nice years from Holik, half of a great Jack year, and whatever else I could fit together to fill out RW. I think in a "make the best team" I'd need to rearrange seasons to juice RW, but the Devils really have been historically kind of weak on the right side. With another monster Jack year next year I can take Bratt 2022, which would be nice. Friesen because the Cup.

#4 Scott Stevens (1993-1994) - #7 Dougie Hamilton (2022-2023)
#27 Scott Niedermayer (2003-2004) - #28 Brian Rafalski (2001-2002)
#3 Ken Daneyko (1989-1990) - #6 Andy Greene (2013-2014)
#23 Bruce Driver (1990-1991)

The quintessential Stevens year, and the Dougie year that came close to matching it (offensively). I wanted Jack 2023, but I think this ends up being the signature Dougie year in NJ, so I'll take it now anyway. Scotty's best NJ season, after he had truly ascended. Maybe not Andy's best season, but a great one on a pretty mediocre team. Daneyko will always be on these teams for me, because he deserves it and I love him. The most Devils Devil.

#30 Martin Brodeur (2006-2007)
#35 Cory Schneider (2014-2015)

Peak Brodeur. Peak Cory. Really need to underline how f***ing GOOD Cory was that year, because I sometimes forget. How the Devils were a -35 G/D in front of him is insane and embarrassing.

This team looks a lot like my usual teams. The differences are I usually take Richer from 1994-1995 instead of Broten (could make the argument either way), McKay instead of Palmieri (mostly just to add grit to the team), and Shanahan or Madden instead of Friesen from the same year (although that was actually a last-second change on my part). (I find the idea of Shanahan-Holik-McKay tantalizing.)

(I find the idea of Shanahan-Holik-McKay tantalizing.)
Yeah I’ll have to look at what I did last year. I feel like it was similar to this, but I don’t think I took Gio or palmieri.

Need to think of a fun gimmick for another one because I find doing these very soothing.

Another crack, utilizing the all-time Devils GP leaders (RS + playoffs combined). I was worried about maybe some positional issues, but it worked out really nicely except for my reserves. For dudes with the same number, higher GP gets it, lower gets skipped.

Some overlap of course, but I think it forced me to take a few less obvious seasons, and obviously a few less obvious players.

#26 Patrik Elias (1999-2000) - #17 Travis Zajac (2009-2010) - #22 Claude Lemieux (1992-1993)
#9 Kirk Muller (1988-1989) - #16 Bobby Holik (1996-1997) - #15 John Maclean (1994-1995)
#10 Aaron Broten (1986-1987) - #18 Sergei Brylin (2001-2002) - #21 Randy McKay (2000-2001)
#8 Dainus Zubrus (2011-2012) - #11 John Madden (2007-2008) - #14 Brian Rolston (1998-1999)
#20 Jay Pandolfo (2003-2004) - #44 Miles Wood (2017-2018)

My mans Zubrus, Brylin, and Madden making the team, big hype. My mans Pandolfo and Miles Wood making the team, less big hype.

#4 Scott Stevens (1993-1994) - #6 Andy Greene (2013-2014)
#27 Scott Niedermayer (1997-1998) - #5 Colin White (2002-2003)
#3 Ken Daneyko (1987-1988) - #28 Damon Severson (2021-2022)
#23 Bruce Driver (1989-1990)

Nieds + White is a classic, Stevens + Greene might never give up a goal against. and I'm glad Severson gets on one of these, I miss him already.

#30 Martin Brodeur (2006-2007)
#31 Chris Terreri (1990-1991)
