Devils 2021 offseason (news, notes and speculation) - part VI

This seems mostly right but how is NJ a long shot? It's looking like either Carolina, NJ, or a dark horse (Seattle?). NJ is at worst the 2nd most likely destination. True, probably more likely than not he re-signs in Carolina.
I do not disagree that the Devils will be in the mix if he makes it. The example I would use is what happend with Hall while he was here. Hall himself stated the Devils were not going to make him an offer until they saw him play regular season games. Posters started creaming their pants when the "Insiders" were reporting that the two sides were talking contract as the season was starting. I was posting this was likely Halls agent trying to get the Devils to make an offer. We later found out the Devils never made an offer. All the "Insiders" were doing was basically reporting what Halls agent was telling them.

Insane bullet dodged

lol why was it an insane bullet dodged he signed a 4 year deal which would be over this season. The devils are sitting at the bottom in terms of cap used. So even if the devils signed him and he stunk 1 the contract would be over this year and it would have little impact on our salary cap. Furthermore we have sucked the past 4 years so really wouldn’t have made a difference if we did or didn’t have him no?

Shattenkirk would have been good in NJ, would have stopped the Subban trade probably from going down too. It was a missed opportunity I think but that's FA.

Tyler Johnson showed us a great deal in the playoffs. He was one of their best players. Very determined and tough to handle and scored a number of key goals at crucial game and series moments. He would take shifts immediately after they were scored on and change the momentum.
I thought he looked really good in the playoffs as well.

But he does turn 31 in a couple days and his shot rate has decreased steadily over the last 4 seasons.

Johnson this past season: .56 g/60 1.59 p/60. 6.1 shots/60.

Boqvist this past season: .82 g/60 1.43 p/60 6.5 shots/60.

Shattenkirk is good in protected minutes. He got that in Stl, he got that in Wash and TB. He did not get that in NY and he would not have gotten that in NJ.

I'd say he may have looked good in NJ in 17-18 given the energy of that team, but he was hurt that year. I imagine we would have been very unhappy with his play as the team fell apart in the years after.

Just a quick example that I had not noticed with everything else going on. Makar's agent and COL negotiated the contract without any "Insider" leaks. Why? Makar's agent needed no leverage.

Do you think he needed no leverage because he is so good, or because CO was just willing to pay up.

I do wonder about MacKinnon. He hinted he will again take a team friendy deal, but CO now has 2 guys making $9 mil per. I guess he can go $9 per and that would still be team friendly, but they are racking up the big contracts.

I also think RFA negotiations are not covered as closely as UFA. The expansion draft, the actual draft, the Blackhawks situation and free agency itself hockey insiders are very busy right now.

Both. Point I am making is that the "leaks" in contract negotiations are typically from agents trying to get leverage or in an extreme example of the team doing it was when the Leafs disclosed the offer themselves that Marner's camp told them was a non-starter.
