Thats a tough loss after being up 2-0

But I must say.. our 5v5 play is just tremendous.

If we can just change up everything about the special teams than we can start winning some of these games we let go because of it

I'd honestly not shed a tear if Gusev and Zajac were scratched. It would suck about Travis because he has been such a good soldier for so long, but I think there are better options right now for Gusev and Zajac if the goal is to win games.

No amount of practice time is gonna fox a PK that has been broken since the start of the season because of the coaches shit set up for it.

^^ I disagree because we don't know just WHAT they are practicing when it comes to the PK.

All we see is what is happening on TV.

I think it's what @Emperoreddy stated : Players just have to EXECUTE.

And they didn't.

Execute what?

Are we just going to pretend that the PK doesn’t have a horrendous—and consistent—habit of *having their backs toward* the net-front man?

Losing your guy is one thing. Getting caught out of position is another. Those are execution issues.

Straight up disregarding the guy in front of the net is a different beast. Much, much worse. And it is now officially a trend.

I've seen that happen while watching other teams play where they disregard the guy in front of the net.

It's not just the Devils that do it.

I don't know why some teams out there think that's a wise move or not but it seems like it's by design which makes no sense.

Writing Gusev off before he's even put into a position to succeed is complete nonsense. I called this happening before the game too. Imagine if that happened last season. Imagine if Johnsson kept getting dicked around instead of put in a position to succeed who now has 5 pts in his last 7.

From what Ive seen, I believe the Devils are running a 'traditional' four-man box

In theory, this would mean leaving a net front presence open but being near for rebounds. Because if one of the two defensemen takes him, then that means theres someone open near or below the net. This is a bad for goalies vs the odds of a bad bounce.

The problem I have is traditional four-man boxes dont work in todays NHL (or shouldnt). Guys are too quick with too much torque on their shots to be able to react quick enough anymore. PK boxes need to be reactionary; cover half walls, dont let a guy inside the box, etc etc.. this is not what I see them doing (except for one PK today , the first one IIRC. That one they did very well on and its because it wasnt a static PK box. They chased and went to the boards.

Gusev rang one of the crossbar today, and it feels like he’s getting close. He was tied for most SOG with 3. He’s obviously been bad this season, but so was Palms until he wasn’t. I’m not ready to scratch him just yet.

No way am I scratching Goose.
With Hischier back, I'm giving Gusev at least 15-20 games to find his game on a line with either Hischier or Zajac.

I think playing Goose ahead of the kids is the right decision to build up his trade value.

If Goose still doesn't fit after 15-20 games, then I look to trade him at 50% retained rather than scratch him.

I’d love to see Goose work back up and play with Nico and Bratt. I still think they can work just as well, if not better, than when Zacha was with them last year.

I’m fine with Zacha being there for now though. It’ll take a bit of time for Nico to get up to full speed I think but thankfully with as many games as we have, it should be sooner than later.

Besides the special teams issue, we are also getting beaten in 3d periods quite a bit. An Islanders game, 2 Philly games, today - maybe another? Anyway that’s another pattern. Though we did put up good 3ds in NY and Boston over the past week.

We had bad periods in other games too. I think it's more of an issue giving a full 60 minute effort.
